Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I was reading about Epsom salts just now (still new here) and was wondering if you apply it as a top dress or as a foliar with HB?
Hey Sweetsue....with the epsoms ,you can go with three different ways including top dressing as Pacalolo says but i find instead of that i like to warm up a glass of my water in the micro and then disolve the epsoms (stir it around) in that, then just add that to your watering can or whatever. Then i know that it'l get down to the roots pronto and not remain undissolved on top of your soil. It's all personal preferance here ,i believe. The fastest way to get it to your plants would be by foliar spraying it on the leafs but that method is not recommended with high brix soils. Hope that helped a bit Sweetsue!:thumb:

Aha! Warm water, duh! Thank you.

*mutter* damned stuff jus' wouldn't dissolve ... :tokin:

Hey guys......I have a mg problem in my non hb soil.....I bought some Epsom salt for the next watering.

Now should I omit the ca/mg and just add the Epsom salt? I say this because I believe with my water over 200 of hardness that the ca in my water already added with the ca from the ca/mag is lockin out the mg?

Does this make sense? My water ca plus the ca I am adding is locking out the mg?

Can't wait to get in to my hb soil....:thumb:

Just add Epsom and skip the cal mag. No lockout is occurring, just a plant that has been chosen for its affinity to salts.

So let me display my ignorance and ask anyway. Why are foliar sprays of Epsom Salts not recommended for HB? I only ask because part of my research today came across compelling evidence that sprays are the most effective way to benefit from the salts.

The only time I would foliage Epsom salt is if the plant has ODd on too much nitrogen and is getting the claw. Epsom foliar is foliar flush and will lower brix a lot. it is like a laxative to leaves.

Foliar feeding is 60% more effective than salts to the roots in general, but when doing it with Epsom it goes beyond supplementation at any kind of concentration.

If you feel like an emergency dose of magnesium is called for use cal mag, with calcium nitrate and add weak Epsom to that.

I really like the warm water solution someone mentioned above.

Hey Doc,

I've noticed that my Sour Strawberry (definitely) and my Petroleum Nightmare (maybe) are starting to develop some taco leaves. I am doing a full flush of all my plants tonight and giving them their first Cat drench tomorrow. I purchased some Epsom Salts and have 2 questions.

1. How much Epson's per plant should I add to start out?
2. Should I hold off on the first feeding of Epsom's until after the flush and after the Cat Drench(s)?

Also, as you know, I purchased the Salty drench from you (just in case any of my strains needed it).
Is the correct time to start using the Salty after both of my Cat Drenches and then after a good flushing? And do I alternate feedings with Growth Energy and the Salty for the rest of the grow?

I'm thinking this is what I have read, but I want to verify before committing to a plan for the rest of this first grow of mine in HB. THX!!

Thanks Doc, that was easy to follow.

I too am interested in this. I was assuming 3-4 tablespoons per gallon but wasn't sure with high brix.

Hey doc, I think one of my plants in veg is suffering from an excess of nitrogen. I thought I was just overwatering but I've let it get dry quite a few times and even the new growth comes out with a claw, what part of your kit causes this? I'm guessing too much growth energy with no water between drenches??

What ratio of Epsom to water do you recommend spraying?

Yep....too much drench without water in between would certainly cause nitrogen excess. That's why I recommend to not do that! :high-five:

I wouldn't do anything about it at this point. Just give it water and 1/4 strength transplant for a week or two until the new growth is all sorted and move ahead.

I don't do that foliar flush short of an emergency as it lowers brix and invites all kinds of problems. I'd only do it if I really, really screwed up.

Doc, whats your opinion of taking flash photos of the plants? While theyre in their dark phase or turn off lights for min in light phase?
I would be concerned the flash throws off the dark phase.

Also, im repeating a question.. How deficient are plants in lets say Mg, before they show signs and symptoms of defiencies?
Thank you.
