Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Ordered some gear, going to get the soil going tomorrow. Doc, do you think a 4x4 tent would be too small to grow 6 plants that your kit provides for? I ended up ordering a p1200.

its either going to have to be 4x4 or 4x8.

Do the 4x8 tent or stick with 4 plants max, IMO. You can fill up a 4x4 with 4 plants without even trying.

No, not really. Those of us in the "over 50" crowd seem to really like sativas, and the 11/13 photoperiod delivers. I had lovely plants on 12/12 too....possibly a greater yield also. But I really like what I'm getting on 11/13.

Use the Cat Drench when it looks like all the buds are "there" and just need to get bigger and denser. While interesting things happen it you do it early, you won't yield very well. You probably have another 2 weeks or so. Pics would help.

Recharge should be done 3 weeks after photoperiod change.

Doc, how about a pic of a bud that is "there" in reference as to when to hit it with the Cat drench?

Regarding the recharge: 3 weeks, meaning sometime during the 3rd week, or at the end of 3 full weeks? Does it matter?

Finally, I'm a little confused about the "new" formulas, meaning, it there still a separate "Ammendment" and "Recharge"? Last time I ordered a (mixed) kit, I only got "Ammendment". I'm getting close to the time to apply Recharge, so I'm wondering. If needed, I'll gladly order some. Thx.

hey mmm,

On this thread #43 I posted a few pics of a plant that, by consensus, doc included, was primed for cat drench. I did drench it at that time and the outcome was outstanding.

(Sorry I posted this in your LED Journal Doc. My mistake)

Hey Doc, I am going to interrupt all of the praise and ask a quick question if that's okay... Feel free to bump me if you believe you have another journal this question/conversation is better suited for.

I am looking into Landrace Strains to grow outdoors this summer. I've never really grown outside before, minus two clones my friends and I bought last May and just let do their thing this past summer. I have four Sativa strains and four Indica strains that I was wondering if I could get your opinion on.

The Sativas:
South African Kwazulu (My top Sativa choice)
Double Thai
Golden Tiger
Oldtimer Haze

The Indicas:
Panama Deep Chunk (My top Indica choice)
Afghan Kush
Pakistan Chitral Kush
Ketema

Would you recommend (for or against) any of those strains outdoors in Colorado? I have to dial in the time I will start them still, but I am just worried the Sativa's will need a more tropical atmosphere to thrive.

I plan on growing six plants, maybe six different plants if I can find a seed bank that sells individual Landrace Strains... I am going to build 2 raised beds (or just buy six 7-gallon pots) and then build a cheap transportable green house outside to cover the ladies. I was curious if your High Brix Kit was applicable outdoors? My only concern would be Acid Rain and pollution from the street... That is why I plan on building a small greenhouse.

Let me know what you think about any or all of that. Anything you have to offer would benefit me.

As always, plants look great, awesome journal with a fun friendly community. Props to you sir. And thanks in advance!

[EDIT] :: I am especially curious because although the bud we grew outdoors wasn't very potent.. it smelt UNBELIEVABLE... I mean it was actually insane the difference between the smell of an indoor plant and an outdoor plant... and I figured that coupled with your High Brix kit would produce not only delicious smelling flowers.. but also delicious tasting and potent!

If I can just chime in, but I saw the strains and I think I can offer some help. First thing do not even think about Golden Tiger or Double Thai if you do not have very long season to deal with. Double Tiger is a November finishing strain while Double Thai finishes around December or January and being pure Thai with all the legendary problems that come with it it's recommended only for very experienced growers. Also, Thai varieties do not tolerate low temps very well which might be a problem for you in late flowering. As far as indicas are concerned Pakistan Chitral Kush is a good strain that produces top hash, but is sensible for high RH in flowering and my plant caught some mold. Also bud worms like that one.

To grow outdoor first thing you need to deal with is how your local climate limits what you can grow. Specifically, if you have a lot of rain, if September and October are dry and wet, when temps start going down, how serious is insect activity, where and how the strains you want to grow were bred. Chhose always having these in mind.

This is exactly the kind of information I cam here for. Thank you so much.

I don't really know all of the responsibilities and problems that come with the Landrace Strains. So knowing Pure Thai and Golden Tiger are hard to grow and finish that late is nice.

I live in Colorado, so the summers are hot and very dry. I live at 5280 ft elevation (exactly). Colorado is mountainous but I live in the plains, so I always figured Indicas would be better... However Colorado winters start late and finish late, people are usually still skiing in April and May. So I have until early November to harvest before it starts getting cold.

The Panama Deep Chunk is looking especially promising... and beautiful!

Thanks for the info, I have a lot more to think about now.

Von Dank gave a great answer to the Cat Drench.

3rd week....end, beginning.....recharge either. doesn't matter too much.

Every kit should have a re-charge. If you only got amendment, someone screwed up----me. That's highly unlikely, but certainly possible. If this is the case, let me know and I'll make it right, pronto.

Doc, with your experience with willie and cat drench only, would you say that is still the best practice for a pure sativa? I'm growing out a jack herer cross and have a pheno that looks like it wants to go 12-14 weeks, just gave her some needed energy after the cat drenches, but worried that hitting her again with energy will make those buds a bit more planty and weirder than they already are lol. Deciding between cat and transplant for next drench, based on your take of the willie. I am not discounting energy however, as these sativa buds surely could use some fattening. But I'd muh rather have less epic nugs than more just ok ones:

On the same note, I've noticed that 11/13 schedule accelerates the ripening process quite a bit. Not necessarily amber trichs, but the buds just get that finished look a lot faster. Upon closer review this girl is only mid week 8, so 14 weeks might be a bit of an overshot. Maybe not. But I just had my first girl to ever finish at 56 days, same strain differnt pheno, so maybe it's genetics. The male ms. U in this cross is fast, and both father dominant plants look like they want 2 or 3 weeks around week 7, then all of a sudden look super ripe the next week. Anyway.

Wow! Isn't that a pretty plant?

The Salty drench is highly growth oriented......I think you might consider using it twice and using the Cat Drench in between. But I agree, I don't think you're going 14 weeks with that one. 12 possibly.

FWIW, Jack smells fantastic in normal HB soil with the usual drenches. It's not one of the salt lovers, IMO. OG? that's a different story.

Sorry doc I also post about using the salty drench on my fire OG cross.

Wondering about your experience with willie and cat drench as primary drench. This jack is totally sativa compared to anything else I've grown. I've avoided the late flower cat drench because most my genetics recently have been indica dom and pretty fast finishers with big fat energy hungry buds. These Jack nugs seem so different I was hoping you could share your thoughts on sativas and cat drench.

Hey Tav,

Jack is a great strain that really packs it on the last 2 to 3 weeks. It can almost seem like a laggard during weeks 5 and 6. When I grow Jack Herer, I finish on Growth Energy. It has such a powerful smell already, and the GE brings out a sweetness and a really interesting terpene profile without changing the basic smell of the strain. (gotta grow me some more!!) So I wouldn't do a second Cat Drench on Jack.

The reason it's so dang Sativafied is because of the 11/13 photoperiod? Are you doing that? I can't remember. But seriously, the photoperiod and the soil combined is going to really bring out the Thai and Colombian. You're a rich man!

I only like the Cat drench on stuff that is ridiculous, like the WN. I'm gonna try that again someday......and I'm also going to run some Colombian Red one of these days soon. I'll probably Cat Drench one of those when the time comes and compare to the others.

So, about the salty drench, it's like Growth Energy but with lots of potassium. It leeches out pretty well, so it won't permanently ruin your soil for High Brix like Greensand or too much K-mag or some organic material, etc.

Doc, I've said it once and I'll say it again and again - you da man! MAHALO! Everything I wanted to know and then some. Thanks!

Oh ya and I am using 11/13. Loving it!
