re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I'd like him to stock all the individual amendment compounds and do small-grow custom mixes for us. :cheesygrinsmiley:

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

This is directed to any of you guys that do the kit:

Are the foliars necessary? I don't really like the ideal of it, but the kit produce looks superb. And what is Cat Drench and what does it do?

Yes they are necessary. May I ask why you dont like idea of foliar spraying?
I believe Cat drench shifts soil energy from growth nitrogen(nitrate) to flowering nitrogen(ammoniacal)
No hype..just incredible results with anything growing green,... :)

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

The foliars are part of the method.

Without them, there's less communication between plant and biota. We feed minerals to the biota and then use a foliar to influence the root exudates, to point the biota in the right direction. The foliar has K in it to feed the plant without corrupting the soil. Another foliar ramps up photosynthesis in the leaves.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Ah, you already posted, Doc - good. I've been composing a post before I saw yours ...

I've been running the kit for several months now, getting into third run territory with my soil. I do individual plants and strains - 17 harvests so far - and each one has different requirements for each feed/watering. I haven't done the sort of experimentation that Doc and Curso have, but I've begun to get an understanding about how the pieces of the kit work. I've made some loadie mistakes reading the correct line on my calendar or simply fuzzing out, and overdosed or otherwise totally screwed things up. :cheesygrinsmiley: So I've done some experimentation by accident.

I've always cat drenched my plants late into flowering - just started that way and kept it up as a habit. I ran some plants in mineralized soil before I got the kit going and the drench pretty much ruined those, so I have a healthy respect for it and am always a little hesitant to do it. I even ran a couple plants without it and they did really well. A few times I've also done a third drench 2-3 weeks before finish. After all of that, I've come to my own workable understanding of what it is and what it does and what that's good for.

Cat drench releases nutrients that are currently locked up in ionic compounds unavailable to the plant. These compounds always exist in the soil. The nutrients released by the drench and the drench itself are tilted to blooming energy, so when the plant gets that surge it will put those resources into blooming. The approach to high brix that we're using relies on plant growth regulators and other hormones to regulate and enhance vegging when we want it and blooming when we want it. We cycle the plant between veg enhancers and bloom/root enhancers. In the process, we cycle the soil and its biota, too. We encourage it to grow roots, and then foliage, then more roots, more foliage, then flowers, fatter flowers, more flowers, fatter flowers, chop.

So, that's why you can drench the plant at wildly different times. It's another one of those arts of the grow. In my case, by drenching later than most do, I realize/think that what I'm doing is extending the bloom. My blooms are fully set and almost mature when I drench, and they always pause and brown-up before restarting with big fat sticky calyxes. I don't necessarily recommend it. I'll probably start drenching earlier now that I'm getting a better feel for what happens. I want to try to catch the bloom surge before its peak instead of after.

That explanation fits for me. It explains why an early drench gets you small tight buds - you encourage the plant to exhaust everything in one big surge. It the dench comes a little later, the plant will grow more calyxes but the soil might not have enough oomph to fill them out completely, so the yield is higher but maybe not fully ripened. If you drench late, you interrupt the finish and bulk up everything the plant has made, provided the soil can handle it. I run at the limits of my soil/biota the way I do it. I need to see how the soil supports plants that peak earlier in bloom.

If I'm advising someone, I'd say to consider the arc of the bloom, and decide when you want to give them that boost. My plants typically show budding pistils at about 10 days after the flip, so that's the first 1.5 weeks. They're in "full bloom" at about 3-4 weeks. That's the time frame the instructions are pointing at. You're looking for what you think is peak blooming time, and then you smack 'em with a bunch of fun new stuff to eat. But the timing is art. :cheesygrinsmiley:

So says Graytail. Whaddy think, Doc?

The cat drench. So says Graytail and agreed upon by other top kit growers.
Nuff said

Thanks guys,
I don't know why exactly I'm against foliars, just isn't my thing. I would be interested to know if I could purchase only the CD, and if it would even be helpful (used alone) in my set up.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

The high brix kit is just that...a kit.

It all works together in a synergistic manner. I have been told not to use these products with anything else as far as other mediums and or other nutes.

If you are on the fence about it and see value in some of the products i highly suggest you take a dive in and get one kit...it will change how you grow and your product for the better!

here is some Kit product:

Hola Muchacho's y Muchacha's!

Ya estoy de vuelta en los Estados Unidos de neuvo! Que Pasa?

Anyways, I'm back. Got to enjoy local produce with some friends we met down there, ate steak pretty much every day, etc. I can't say I'm happy to be back, as I'd rather be there than here.....but things are looking pretty good. I'll get some pics up soon and resume shipping out kits, etc.

Glad to see everyone!

Hey Doc,good to have you back...safe and sound! It musta been nice ,being able to get away like that.Looking forward to some "tales" of your travels in S.A. Anyhow , I need supplies, where do i get in line? My MK Ultras are approaching week 4 of pistels and looking great! Going to time the first C.D. a little later this round, mid way thru week 4 instead of week 3. That stuff scares me. I have come to respect it,even with my limited experience. Thanks to Grey and the lads on here ,alot can be achieved just by reading and listening.Once again ,welcome back eh! I'l have a Stella for ya! Cheers.

Duggan, Que Pasa?

Email me regarding supplies, please.

Don't be afraid of the Cat Drench. Just make sure your soil is revved up and the plants are super healthy. A good way to do it with 7-10 gallon pots is:

1. slowly pour 2-3 gallons of just water through each pot to completely saturate it and have considerable drainage out the bottom. Let it sit 20 minutes.

2. After 20 minutes have passed, Pour 3/4 to 1 gallon of Cat Drench slowly into each pot. This is a good time to top dress with worm castings, "rescue soil," or just plain soil.

This seems to really change up the soil in a dramatic fashion. You can usually see changes in 24 hours: Leaves take on a more olive color as nitrogen fixation must now feed the plant with the nitrates flushed out. There is an obvious growth in reproductive parts of the plant, with pistils pushing and calyxes swelling up rather tight. Resin begins to appear.....lots of it.

Just mix it up as instructed...less is better than more, but there is some tolerance there provided you don't double it, or anything. Water twice in a row with it, the second time you don't need to do the flush....but do one the NEXT watering after the second Cat Drench except hit this one with Growth Energy and 1/4 oz. Transplant.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

A couple good tips doc...thanks!I was pretty much gonna do all that except the mini flush before C.D. Anyhow Doc,i have already topped with a good 2" of wiggle worm and recharge was a good month ago now. It's easy for me to see what the bigger pot size and the few other tweeks being done are helping big time! Almost 4 weeks in now and leaves still all shiney and green. No sign of any defs. at all.Gave them some epsoms a while back ,but just a little. It's interesting to see the main stalk grow according to the pot size. Bigger pot ,bigger stalk ,more and bigger branches:) I'l email about supplies.Cheers!

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Doc or any other kit growers have an opinion on biochar in kit soils? Conradino has a thread just started about this amendment. I've never used it for produce but I have grown many woody ornamentals in a mix with a good percentage of char. Because the trees are re-potted ever 2,3 ,4,5 years char is useful in maintaining soil structure & pH. It also helps tremendously with container weight.

Was wondering who all might have made any observation on biochars use in growing cannabis.

Here's some detail from a product, reasonably priced (comparatively*), available online from Cali.

Pyrolysis Based BioChar
1 Cubic Foot treats 20-100 Cubic Feet of Soil or up to 100 square feet
pH 6.97 CEC 22 N-P-K = .46-.17-1.4
Conserve Water & Promote Healthy Soil Life
Apply once for years of benefit

* price raised from $15 to $25 in the few hours since i purchased and posted!
