Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

So Duggs’s have kind of the best of both worlds - the air pruning without the dry out. I’m a fan of those air pots :D Heaps of folks that use them grow stellar plants too.

OK,...here's the thing. With fabric pots or 'rootbuilders' , like i use...the outside edges dry out much faster...this is the ONLY issue with them. That is the issue some members have had with them. However these 'rootbuilders i use are not soft, breathable fabric,..they are hard plastic , so roots get properly air pruned before they dry out near the outsides , like they do in regular fabric pots. Members have also said they don't like how the roots poke out of the bags and are harder to transplant with the roots holding onto the pots. I believe in my pots and i also believe in hard , plastic ones too.
If i had a choice between big fabric...or big plastic...i would go with the plastic, for the reasons i mentioned. That being said, when i remove the root mass from my pots the whole ball stays very much together because of the awesome , fibrous , root system that has been built by 'air pruning ' the roots. Cheers.

Hmm, still not sure why that has anything to do with Brix.

Now myself, I use 25 gallon fabric pots and have a nice cover crop and or a very thick mulch layer and I water pretty much every day. Yes the outer edge dries out first although I do really water the outer edge thoroughly, but since I am in Living Organic Soil with lots of worms and microbes I keep my soil very moist all the time, never ever let it dry out at all.
In late flower I might water twice a day with oxygen rich water.
The only time roots will grow through the pot is if its touching something, like if you have it sitting flat on the ground then roots will pop through.
Mine are on pot elevators so are exposed to air on all sides and I've never seen a root.
I also never transplant, I plant a germinated seed right into the 25 gallon pot. I don't want to be digging a hole into my No-Till.

I was about to buy a refractometer to test my Brix, could you recommend one, there seem to be a bazillion different ones. Anything in particular I should look for, any good brands, bad ones to stay away from etc.?

Very nice, my favorite strain is a cross between Candida and Girlscout Cookies.
It's called Hiydrow, its 16% CBD and 8% THC with a really nice terpene profile.

Very nice Nunya! I really liked growing in my #10 fabric root pouches and had good success but maybe I was not attentive enough on the watering and switched to plastic #15's and a few 7's when I was low on soil. I prefer plastic and have had better luck. I'll have to try 25's some day, fabric or plastic. So what kind of yields are you getting from the 25's, how many do you run at a time and are you still growing in a bathtub? Saw that in your journal.

I usually average about 8 1/2 oz per pot and I grow two plants.
I've gotten up to 10 1/2 oz per plant.
Yep still growing in tub, it's the perfect grow space.

Oh Nuny, that talk about pots had nothing to do with Brix. Refractometers are available ..like this one..around 20 bones.

Nice! I grew in a tub during a transition for a month or so. My best pull from 1 plant so far was 10 zips in a plastic 15, Coked out Girl Scout from CSI. She took up 1/2 the 4x4. The other 2 only yielded 3 and 5, both were in 15's too, those were Sweet Pink Stink also CSI and different phenos.

Cheers all! Duggan I love the DIY air pots! Where would one acquire said black material? And is there a bottom attached?

Holy crap woman....nice buds. very nice buds!!:high-five::headbanger:
:thanks: :high-five: :passitleft:
Agreed!...will have 2 of those in the rotation this year!... :thumb::high-five:...cheerz...h00k...:hookah:...
Excellent. :high-five: I find it a very beautiful plant - even with those ones rough edges. This one has been very delicate - not in a problematic way. It’s just kind of silky. My impressions after this first time growing it, is that it doesn’t like to dry out quite as hard in veg as most plants I have grown and is quite sensitive to environmental stressors. I’m going to run it indoors next time. Outdoors i think it needs a greenhouse or good hoop house. I’ll be sure to check out your grow of them h00k - i’m really looking forward to growing it again.

Cool - I have heard of that just recently. Sounds great - a good 2:1 is next on my list so that will be a string candidate. The CandidaCD-1 is good stable genetics. :thumb:

One of the other reasons Doc was saying not to use fabric pots was that because they are soft and the soil may shift while moving them around causing damage to the roots. There was a time when there was a rash of growers having issues in the kit and one of the commonalities between a good number of them was that they were using fabric pots.

My bet is the plant has massively more roots and feeding heavier plus many people have a tendency to let them dry out too much in fabric.
In proper soil with good aeration you can't really overwater in fabric unless you pull out a firehose.

Pot mat'l comes in all sizes of flat sheets...from one to 7 gals. They come with a proper bottom pc. but wat i did was use two 7 gal. ones and made a bigger bottom out of 1/2 inch galv. chicken wire and i use a pc of black landscaping cloth to line the inside bottom . .just so the soil stays put.
