DIY Stealth Cab, Hydro, LED & Multiple Strains in Small Space - Oh Boy!

have a q., only u i know, is there and not get mad?:yummy:

high krip, im using happy frog, what can i put in it for better drainage/ per lite/ or ?

Wow...I don't know...I'm a "hydro guy"...I would think perlite would work, but maybe one of the soild growers can chime in with more detail or a better suggestion?

i want to change to grow cubes, and where its 2 buckets . get rid of soil./ i can make my own from home depot .?

im goin hydro! after harvest///:welldone:

time to move up!!!!

MORE GROWROOM PROBLEMS!

I checked the seedling & clone this morning and they both look fine. It looks like the yellowing on the seedling is starting to reverse itself, so that was some good news.

But, when I checked the girls in flower this morning, even though the plants look great, this is what I found:

Half of the LED's on the BlackStar are out!!! :thedoubletake:

Of course, it happens on a weekend when I can't get in touch with anyone. The light should still be under warranty, but my guess is it will be at least a week, maybe more, before I can get a replacement or longer if they have to repair this one and send it back!

It would be a helluva coincidence if all the lights on one side of the LED burned out at the same time, so there must be some "controller" or "bank" for 1/2 the lights that's gone bad.

I'm hoping that LightHouse can tell me how to fix this myself (if possible) without sending it back, and will update as soon as I know what the next step is.

I guess it could be worse, since the whole light could be out - but not much worse!

looks like one of the drivers is out (power supply). They are not difficult to replace, just need to have one on hand. In the mean-time try to get some supplemental lights to make up the shortfall, if you were in SoCal I could lend you one of my back-up 300s.

I wouldn't pop the case open until you get a hold of their customer support, it may void any warranty if it has a seal on it. They'll most likely ask you to open the case up to ensure all of the power leads are securely fastened. If they are all in place then they will need to send you a replacement driver (preferably overnight). If they don't have components to swap out, then I would ask them to send the replacement light overnight express, and then return the faulty light in the same box--ask for a return label as well. No reason that you should have to pay the postage to replace faulty equipment. I don't know what their warranty period is. The lights I have are a 3 year warranty and a 90 day money back guarantee on the units.

Thanks, Steve! That's my plan, exactly! :thumb:

Hopefully, LightHouse will be as accomodating! :)

The BlackStar's have a two-year warranty, so it should be covered. Usually, they make you pay for the replacement light, then when they get the bad one back, they credit you back for the charge. This kind of sucks, cuz' it will tie up several hundred dollars in funds for a couple of weeks, but it could be worse.

I wish I could take you up on that offer! :thankyou:

Unfortunately, I'm on the other side of the country.

I'm not sure what, if anything I can do to get more lighting in there without removing the LED, and even with 1/2 the lights missing, it's still probably better than just about anything I can get in there quick.

BTW...I just told Greenie to ask you about your res and how often you do res changes. You may want to visit her journal and comment! ;)

BANDAIDS & HEALING

OK, guys...it's been a crazy couple of days with all these issues.

For the bandaid, I just got back from HD buying a bunch more adapters and was able to increase the number of CFL's from four to seven.

Each of the two fixtures had a Y-adapter with two 23w CFL's. I put two more Y-Adapters in each of the existing Y-Adapers, giving me four sockets in each light to work with.

In the front fixture, I could squeeze in four lights, but I had to make one of them a 13w compact CFL so I could get the cab door closed without breaking it:

On the back fixture, I could only get 3 bulbs in since the UFO prevents adding the fourth:

So, I now have a total of about 160w (actual) of CFL's with 1/2 of my 180w LED in flower.

As for the "healing"....here's a quick shot of the Power Skunk clone. You can how her green color is coming back less than 24 hours after surgery:

I hope your weekends are all going smoother than mine, so far! :)

Hey K been busy but wanted to chime in real quick. Couldn't you suppliment with cfls until the LED is back? Or is heat a limiting factor...?

Funny you mention it, Quix!

See the above post...

The real limiting factor is space, but I got a temporary solution in place (it may become permanent, even after the LED is fixed!) to at least keep the girls happy while I deal with.

Hi Mr. Krip -

Bummer that you had some root issues, but it sounds like you jumped right into action now and got things headed the right direction.

One thing I will say - I had a really nice outcome on that last auto-flower i did, and I had a root issue at the beginning with the seedling. I personally believe DM Zone will really amaze you with how much it can help - it has and did for me. Great product, and one I think I'll always incorporate - if I'm worried about the roots, I run it at their highest recommended dose and the roots always start looking healthier. You've had a bit of a bad luck run - but you are to be commended for the positive attitude along the way.

Good luck with the LED light - I was in a similar situation with a blown ballast under warranty a couple of grow ago and just had to to let the ladies bask in some CFL glory temporarily - gotta do whatcha gotta do! :goodluck:

QUICK PIC UPDATE

It looks like both the Power Skunk seedling and the PE clone are VERY happy from the minor root surgery and transplants! :)

The seedling had some notable growth last night, her yellowing is waning, and she was looking all perky this morning with her little leaves pointing up.:

The bonsai "experiment" has been going well, but mostly because I've learned so much. The truth is, I've probably made this bonsai too short by not topping her correctly. She's only about 7" tall and I think, optimally, she would have a few more inches and branches.

However, I've been able to keep her alive and relatively happy which really is a major "breakthrough" in my figuring out how to maintain multiple strains in the cab.

Here's a quick look at her:

DSCN0564.JPG

So, my current plan is to be able to clone the Power Skunk and the PE Seedling to get two more bonsai moms (I'll either flower or toss the current PE bonsais that are a little small).

Since I'm only flowering two plants at a time, it will be no problem maintaining two bonsai moms and some clones in hempys in the veg cab. Where it gets crowded is when I move the vegging plants into the waterfarms, then veg in the waterfarms for a couple more weeks before flower.

So, I think the waterfarms will be "dedicated" to the flower side of the cab. Once I harvest the current crop, I'll move two of the vegging plants into the waterfarms and veg them for a couple more weeks on the FLOWER side of the cab.

I'll just swap out the current CFL's for 6500k's, change the timer to 18/6 for a couple of weeks, and let them veg with the LED and CFL's.

In fact, if I do it this way, I think I can maintain at least three, and maybe even four or more, different bonsai moms, then just choose the strain I want to clone for the "next" harvest.

So, once I get two bonsai moms going, and get though the next harvest, I think I'll attempt to introduce a 3rd strain, which most likely (if I can get her to germinate!) will be my last Lucy seed.

As for the flower side of the cab, today...

First, I'm holding off on res changes again, since I've done enough work on the grow this weekend, and still have other stuff I need to get done.

Also, it's a little difficult moving the lights to really get in for pics. The CFL bulbs are all exposed and very near the UFO, and I can't really move the CFL's with moving the LED or risking breaking some bulbs, and...you get the idea!

But, here's a few shots I managed to take without rearranging anything and without giving you pics of light bulbs!
