Dark Devil Auto: A Community Grow Record

Yayyyyyyyyy

I have a Dark Devil ready to pop it's head out of it's hempy solo cup. I'm considering growing it in a different style hempy pot. Larger then the last pot I used. I keep going back and forth...hempy.......ProMix........hempy......ProMix.

:hmmmm: decisions :hmmmm: decisions ...convenience.....flavor......convenience... flavor...:Namaste:

Wait, which one is convenience and which one is flavor? I use the same exact nutrients in either medium. And quit laughing and offer some supporto_O:Namaste:

The major difference might be that soil offers a buffering effect against people's propensity for badly overfeeding (and improperly feeding) their plants. Give a plant what it needs - no more, no less - and the difference between soil-grown and hydroponic-grown cannabis becomes much less.

Or so I have been told. . . .

Hey beez, how often do you just water vs feeding ? I'm using ProMix for the first time. Hell I'm growing in soil for the first time, and don't quite know WTF I'm doing.

I'm not entirely sure as to which of the ProMix products are soil and which are soilless.

Hey @Rifleman , Mom just gave me a little plastic thing that she bought one year with an anglehair(?) plant in it. 3"x3" by maybe ten inches tall. The top third (or slightly less volume) is a little planting "cup," and the portion below that is simply a miniature reservoir. There is some kind of strap that hangs down from the cup, which is obviously supposed to wick up from the reservoir (but looks like one of the straps from the cheapest ever "made in China" duffel bag the world has ever known  ) . Anyway...

I got one of those wild hairs, and found myself wondering what it would be like to grow a DDA (S₁ ;) ) in it. I have never used such a small self-irrigated container for cannabis, and even in terms of "regular" containers of that size, I've only ever done rooted clones pretty much straight to flower.

I am wondering... Well, I guess what I am wondering is whether this thing would be a complete waste of time, lol. My mother has always been anti-cannabis - but, like many late-70s widowed, overworked, women with limited means and seemingly unlimited pain/ills, she could undoubtedly use it. I have a notion to try to grow one out for myself and, if it is not a complete disaster, start another one in it just as soon as the weather warms up enough next Spring (Mom keeps her house even colder than I do in the Winter, for the same reason ($), so plants don't thrive in her home then and it's a rare one that even survives) .

I am sort of hoping that this thing would have the potential to produce... IDK, seven grams at a time, lol? I'm also banking on being able to answer the inevitable, "Is that thing mare a gee Juan a?!" with, "It can't be - it's purple." (and smells like smells like cheap, imitation, floral-flavored cleaner instead of a skunk) . "No, mom, this here is called cannabis, and it's an herb that people have been growing for thousands of years for pain relief and insomnia. Came via a holistic healer of great reputation before she headed South to live. Here are some recipes for cooking with it." <runs away, cackling madly>

Probably a pipe dream. But maybe not - my pipe only currently has some Cheyenne cherry-flavored little filtered cigar (still less than two bucks for a pack of 20... and worth about half that  ) that I dug out of ashtray butts earlier, so it's definitely not that kind of pipe dream.

Who needs a PGP public key to guarantee that I wrote this when I can just add a ramble to every post, instead?

EDIT: (Addendum) Anyone know if I could simply throw some Osmocote Plus into the little reservoir and tell Mom to give the planter a nice shake every time she walks past it? She sure isn't going to be up to mixing nutrient solution - and I seriously doubt I'd be able to spike a quantity of soil(?) that would fit in a small pile on someone's open palm with enough nutrients to support even a tiny auto-flowering plant through an 85+ day lifetime.

Hey Rifleman........I know you know it already. There is no soil in ProMix so it is considered to be a soil-less medium. My nutrients are a one part granular that I mix up in gallon jugs at 50% strength. From one of these jugs I pour 1/2 gallon into an empty gallon jug, top it off with water, and adjust the PH to 6.5 or as close to it as I can get without going crazy. I feed each plant a little each day (amount depends upon the size of the pot and needs of the plant) mainly around the edges of the pot to draw the roots outward to take up the nutrients. I grow smaller plants, many in 3 gallon pots. These will receive approximately 300ml daily, less if they tell me. So each plant receives small doses of 1/4 strength nutrients each day.

With some plants I do have to up the nutrient strength as they progress through flowering but so far never more then 1/2 strength. I sure hope that makes sense and proves helpful.

LMAO...No I didn't realize it's not considered soil. It's black and crumbly like dirt just figured it was kinda. I've been giving mine a gallon about every 10 days so far. Fed once, watered twice.

If you're using the ProMix HP it has great water retention and also drains very well. I know that sounds like a contradiction but it's not. The HP has a lot more perlite then the ProMix BX that I use, but I add more perlite to the BX before I use it. I love the texture and consistency of the ProMix.

I used to feed one day and water the next time. But I'm getting old and would often times forget which they were getting that day. So that's when I started mixing up 2 gallons of 50% strength nutrients on Monday and not PH it. Then split one of the gallons into two separate gallon jugs ending up with two gallons at 25% nutrients. My potting cycle goes from Red Solo cup to 3/4 gallon pot to 2 gallon pot and then to either a 3 gallon or 5 gallon pot. In the 3/4 gallon pots they are given about 75ml of 25% nutes daily. In the 2 gallon pots they are fed roughly 150-200ml of 25% nutes daily. In the 3 gallon pots they're fed approx. 300ml of 25% nutes daily. As you well know some plants drink more and some drink less so I adapt to what the plant wants. But as a rule the above feeding schedule has worked well for me. Just don't let your plants get like this and you'll be fine.

I'm using the HP. Started them off in their final pots, 3 gallon felt. I watered them in good when they were planted, and have been waiting until I see them wilting before giving them anything else. Today each one got 6 quarts with a nutrient ppm value of 770. Advanced Nutrients pH Perfect 3 part, 5ml per gallon. Considered a very light feed when I'm doing DWC. Only one has burnt tips so far, by tomorrow its anybody's guess.

Well I sure don't have to tell you how to grow autos. I'm feeding autos and photo plants the same 1/4 strength nutrients, a little each day, until they show me they want something else. Be it more or less.

My first grow started late July with a Mango Kush Fem Photo and a few weeks into it I started a DDA also. Here are the pics from the grow.

And now Day 73! Getting close to the end

I think I read that @Rifleman harvests his DDA plants at 95 days, 105 days, something like that. Of course, conditions will differ and that can affect things. Plus, I might be misremembering, lol.
