Cottage 420's Organic Perpetual Indoor Garden

Memory is for dumb people, the wise man needs to think up new things, not merely memorize the old ones.

Yo bob, the girls are golden, congrats on the award I surely learned a thing or two here, so kudos well deserved! Have a good one!

Thank you sir for the kind words and glad to see you back again... was just talking you up on another journal. Someone in the EU wants better lighting than blurples from the far east. I told them you built your own they are pretty nice.

Lol well three months of a plant science class and a week of mulling that around, and I don't even know if I'm right, so take it with a grain of salt :p

I mean my theory doesn't really explain why there's naturally occurring hermaphrodites after all. BUT I did ask my plant science teacher about self'ing plants, and he agrees that the meiosis process will shuffle the genotypes up still.

Yeah your teacher probably right. A clone is an exact copy of the genes already selected and put out there. My thoughts are anytime there's a seed involved, the gene pool gets opened up again for some more play time. May be all the seeds are "similar" or very close to the parents but still open to a bit of change depending on conditions. The trick is to have consistency... I will pay a little extra for that when its time to shop. Sometimes thats not what I'm looking for tho..

Change is good, having a good eye for what's good before they are good. That takes time and practice and sometimes luck!

Just wish there was a way to shorten the learning curve

My wife and I have been growing organically since we were both little children learning from our parents and grandparents with the oral tradition. I've learned a shit ton more in the few years I've been here on 420mag reading and following. Actually learning from friends here, shortens that learning curve for me 100%. Still learning but always having fun.

Same here, I'm just starting to watch some of these strains for keepers to pollinate. I got some pollen from a reversed branch off the Lab and hit a branch so hoping for a few S1's

Dam bb those girls look amazing great job. Ihad a question for you? when you flip ur girls what goodies do u throw in there with them? do you do a top dress or any certain teas? I know youve said b4 but i cant remember, an i cant seem to find where i wrote it down at lol. Anyway just wanted to ask that quick and to stop in and look at the garden and drool alil bit lol lookn great bro keep up the good work :Namaste:

I-yup... I scoop out about 1/2 the soil of the container I'm going to up-pot into. That extra soil goes into the soil bin for later use.

In the hole I put 1tbs of Mykes, 1 tsp of VAM and a tsp of SAT (Endo Mycorrhizae - 4 Species, 1LB Package). About a cup of EWC .. mix that with the mycos in the hole a little bit.

Up-pot the plant into the hole going from a #3 nursery pot to a 7.5gal final container.

There's space around the root ball so I sprinkle about a .5 to 1 cup of your BAS mix in there ... pour it around the root ball. Then top off the container with my soil mix .. I'm always recycling the soil out of the flower containers - 1/2 scooped out into the soil bin, then I top off the new flowering plant with that soil from the soil bin I've been using over and over round and round it goes.

Eventually the soil bin will be used up to empty.... takes about a year. Hey where did all that soil go?? Plant material... and whatever isn't flowers goes back into the compost bin to start all over again.

Do another new soil mix, fill the soil container up and usually another one in reserve.. get a soil test done.... ready, set, grow, round and around we go!

Pretty much we do the same thing in our outdoor gardens ... almost exactly the same actually. I use this soil mix outside as a top dress/mulch or whatever is in vogue for names.. the soil mix outdoors is amazing, doesn't wash away even in a hard rain. Each season we just add more....I used to use straight up CSPM for top dress mulch but it really didn't do a lot for growth.

I haven't really got the logistics of soil cycling down. I think I need to cook up a new batch to have ready soon (I think ), but now it's winter and I don't want to smell it while it's cooking in my house, but it's cold as heck outside, so I'm not sure what to do.

I use totes - like the large or extra large (42 gal) put the soil in the tote water a little, put the lid on it. Can leave it outside. My gardens never complained about the cold! I actually have 1 tote in my kitchen beside my recycling containers so it blends in... I have a big kitchen. And another tote outside. The tote indoors is mainly the recycled/left overs. We widdle that down till gone. Then swap totes. I only mix soil in the spring when I'm emptying out my compost/vermicompost bins. There's no smell...even with the tote lids off when I'm up-potting.

My wife uses the soil in late winter when we are getting starts going for the spring. So I'm good on the home front.

When I'm up-potting I'm doing it on my kitchen table which is actually a library table - (its taller than a standard height table so easy on the back and food closer to mouth = less spillage :reading420magazine: ).

Soil cycling we've been doing it for a long long time... somehow we just figure out the best way with least amount of labor.

I agree. Shes, the Lybernith, as pretty as it gets.

I tell my friends that Labyrinth is Lemon Thai... Looks like Thai weed in the bag. Bright green w/sparkles and a lemon smell.

First thing everyone does is smell weed.... Is it me, kinda seems counter intuitive. Smells and tastes are subjective as hell.

One persons lemon could be another persons cat urine... yikes! Lemony with a hint of cat.... yummmm-K.

OK so a little update.

The other day went into the flower room full on intending to chop Labyrinth down. Pulled out the Dolato, staked and tied her up. Took a close look at Lab and .... had the loppers in hand... couldn't do it, was only like 49 days. I'll wait... now I have a problem. The Dolato was in stretch (glad I tied her up) and she grew another foot.

Going to have to get some help moving plants. The Labyrinth is in the back row... with Dolato @ 5' and wide, and Chemdawg @ 5.5' and colas forming. I'm not going to disturb Chemdawg... she's the next frost monster. Glad I staked and tied her when I did.

Dilemma is where to put Dolato. I've got some pretty nice size Chem clones and a few PMB (Purple Monkey Balls) - the veg plants look fabulous. Dolato is big, I'm trying to not do the same thing and put a flowering plant in the back row. I got out of sync...

So likely going to back Dolato out, and put a Chemdawg and a PMB in the back row, and harvest Labyrinth and DT #4 (60ish days .. too strong for me this early to harvest...oye) then put the Dolato back in the front row.

Be easier just to put everything in the middle and get rid of the tent put a flood tray or 3, call it done - room already totally white. Too many large plants. OK gonna puff and sleep on it.

Flower Pics!

DT #6? (DT #5 and #6 are intermingled now so hard to say!") - fatty cola and still no gold.

Dolato - front left - Chemdawg - front right - Labyrinth in the back - Oh that big long ass cola in the back left is DT #4 - she makes up nug size with fatty nugs .. takes more time.

Labyrinth - frosty buds! ... it's time. Chop day tomorrow. Wish us luck! That Dolato just took off, is a lot larger today.

Bob do you judge chop time on trichomes?

Yes sometimes... I figure out a strain, I run a couple of runs then I get it down and know pretty much from the look of the plant. Since I'm all organic the plants change colors and that's a sure sign we are getting close. Then I may take a cut and put it under the scope (mini cheapo PC plug in) and take a look and a taste puff. I vape mainly so just let the bud sit over night and puff it the next day.

Labyrinth I've grown a bunch and she's a fast finisher so @ 50 days I know it's time. I've even chopped her before 50 days.

The best way to tell if a plant is ready well the indica/sativa mixes is to look at the calyx shape and if there still pushing out new pistols. This Lab hasn't put out any new pistols on the main few colas for a week or so. She's probably getting over ripe but the calyx are still puffed and swollen.

On the Sativa... whole different story. Can't really tell from the trichomes even under a loop/microscope and the pistols just keep coming. I know that 90 days is a good time to start thinking about chop, so I look for any nanners from 85 days on... if I look at trichomes, the sativas just stack new on top of old so it's hard to go by. When I see a nanner or 2 - that's chop day or anytime after 90 days.. I've let them go longer if no nanners but I try not to go too long. I Just hope for enough cloudy so It's not white knuckles... not that there's anything wrong with that but everyday its a little much!

I got spoiled with the 50/50 Sat/Indica that finish in 50 days.

It's hard to pass up a nice landrace sativa tho... always going to be interesting. Like the DT's going gold... freaked me out the first time.

That said, I'd rather grow the 50 day strains... the math works out better on yields. If I get 4 zips in 50 days which is my average, if I go 2x as long I need 8zips per plant, that's the upper end not an average yield for me.

So yeah prefer the 50 day strains, keeps everything moving along, right now I've got a full VEG room over flow and clones... always take clones!!

So I usually go by time then plant color then eyes on calyx shape and pistols... take a close look if I'm not sure. I always errr in the side of caution. A few more days wont hurt...

Cool! I'm subbed up.

I didn't go to the browser the first time I was in the app so I can had trouble finding it and was reading some of your old posts from back in 2011/2012 it's very cool to see how you've progressed in your craft. Nice work!!

Also sorry to butt in, Learned last Friday difference between an actual living soil vs. Using organic bottles as relates to flushing/Fading.

Very interesting how the rizosphere and other ques will actually make the plant flush its own leaves. Microbes stop their chain and supplying nutrients etc.

I'll say it again... More space or outdoor privileges ;) they look so georgous in living soil.

I'll get caught up a bit in the morning.

Have a great night!

Brother Bob, DL Wholesale for that Gorilla tent. They have a website and ship Im sure. They were $200. cheaper than the other grow shop and that shop said theyd match Amazons price. Ive noticed while shopping at DL that some prices are way cheaper and some the same as other shops. 4D

Ok thanks because I don't want the labyrinth going amber on me, but don't want things to get racy.

Not much race with this one. 50-60 days should be perfect. I think I chopped this one @ 52 days. I just trimmed and canned her. A lot of the lower nugs were a tad airy, kinda glad really cause with all that frost PM could easily creep its way in there if the nugs were real dense. All the tops were perfect... sticky A/F too trimming. My fingers looked like I was getting ready to go to bat with all that pine tar em.

Yeah so pretty easy to trim too... what to do with the trimmings. All those railed up sugar leaves, man I hated cutting them off. Bag appeal is MUCH better without the sugars. I have a pile of em.. gonna go to the art store and get a silk screen and frame and see if I cant make some hash. Last time I tried freezer hash but the trimmings were too sticky and the screen got clogged right away. Gonna try a larger mesh and see if that works.

One thing about this plant... it's hard to grow in the summer without a lot of care on the RH. Winter time is perfect. I did have some days with very high RH in the flower room due to those large DTs and I closed the door. The humidity was up in the 80% range a few times.

I think this plant was the reason I found out about Horsetail Fern for a treatment for PM/mold. There's sooo much goo and trichomes its a sticky one.

Today when trimming she started to smell like chocolate .... Chocolate Thai it is then.

Yield dry and trimmed = 118gr. So 4.2 zips dried and canned. I'll take it. This plant was under the 3K COBs and 2 of the 1750 COBs. I noticed that the top colas near the 1750K lamps stopped stretch about 20" from those lamps and stopped pushing out any new pistols earlier than the others under the 3K. Not sure if that means anything yet or not.

Penny you can let this plant get a few ambers... it's still going to be real strong. This is the plant a few of my friends said was too strong for them. For ripeness I look at the calyx shape... once they start to shrink, chop. This plant did it on the main colas but I harvested right when the pistols started to recede. I'll have to take a smoke test in a few weeks and report back.

Smell today - Chocolate/lemons with a hint of funk.
Tasted like lemon last night.

Likely will get a more chocolate flavor and smell after a little cure. This one wont last long.

I'll post up pics of the trimmed goodies. Overall totally satisfied, everything went smooth so for me thats very little work. Just the way I like it.

This WAS the test nug I puffed last night:

Now here's my possible problem child. I popped 3 Buffalato Fem seeds a few weeks ago. One of them looks like either a mutant or TMV virus. I've never seen TMV in person so not sure if this is it or not but if it is, I gotta make the call the cull that whole shebang, pot, soil plant - into the garbage can.

Anyway here's a few pics...She's "kinda" getting sorted out at the new growth. I don't want to even touch her.

Anyone help with this - TMV or mutant? I'm inclined to lean on conservative side, cut (trash) my losses and move on ...

Snow snow snow... SnowHigh! We had a nice little 4" snow storm today between 1pm-6pm right at rush hour on a Friday. Wow... people, some one gets stuck, how about we man up and help out. Sheesh.

Was shoveling the sidewalk and everyone was beeping horns sitting on thumbs while a cute little missy in a rear wheel drive BMW without snow tires couldn't get out of her own way...OMG.. She stopped at the stop sign. I told her put it in 2nd gear and go SLOW and don't stop. Took a little push and she was off. Then some asshat almost ran me over while I was crossing the street.... pedestrians at a cross walk.. you're on your own.. wait what... ?

Tribute to SnowHigh for the snow gear!

I have a PMB male in the VEG room with a gaggle of AUTOs.. thinking of letting him do his thing, collect some pollen and get some Ghost Train Haze x PMB AUTO going! Thinking out loud, we have swollen ball sacs ... about to open any day....likely tomorrow morning.
