Oh god, there's a river here called the Au Sable...great for multi-day canoeing/camping but some of the campsites along it have terrible blackfly swarms. I took my daughter on a three day trip when she was 6 or 7 and I had never encountered blackflies before. We got torn up so badly at one of the sites. Literal chunks of flesh. Horrific little fuckers.
Where I am at in Macomb County we hardly get any mosquitoes even with a wet spring. This was the first spring since our first one in 2013 where the yard did not have several inches of standing water. The dry weather started last summer and went into the fall. I was looking at the Willow tree and it is showing signs of stress from the dry soil.
Hardly any Black Flies or Horse Flies or whatever they are called around here either but those things are nasty when out on a boat on Lake St. Clair or Lake Erie. Not much of a problem on the Detroit River so maybe it is the faster moving water.
Several years ago I had some of my plants in with another grower's plants. That was up in St. Clair County and the humidity up there was miserable, just miserable, and the Mosquitoes were even worse.
Oh, we get Fish Flies around here by the end of May or beginning of June. They do not bite, actually they have no mouth and they might want to scream (Just a play on the name of a famous short story. Famous in some reading group or another, anyway. A story called "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream".)

The skeeter population will catch up unless you have a dry summer. We get mosquitos in the desert but very few. I don't miss em.

They are attracted to lights. On some nights it is a huge hatch and with a mild breeze it might blow them on-shore and they end up flying around a street light or a lit up gas station until they run out of energy and fall to the ground. People try sweeping them up or using hoses to wash them into the sewer. On a really, really bad hatch I have seen store owners using snow shovels and occasionally heard reports of local cities along the lake putting a snow plow back into operation for the day.
I used to have an large Oscar in an aquarium and I would catch Fish Flies and put them in the tank. The Oscar slurped them up.

My country was barely touched covid wise, and there is a real distrust for the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has made many complacent and non believing when it comes to the financial/medical carnage which is caused by being hit in the face by covid. We have a real tin foil hat demographic who actually believe the vaccine is a ploy for the government to microchip and track you. I’m not talking paranoid schizophrenic mental health patients who are off their meds here either. I’m talking general public.
They are saying the whole country will be vaccinated by Christmas, I say they are dreaming.
I think this will just be another yearly vaccine going forward.

Seriously...the fuck? The people talking about 5G and Pizzagate here probably have fucking Cortana and Alexa running in their home. My mates wife is an RN. Her hospital refused to shut down the elective surgery floors even though the covid floors were fucking full. There's the real 'conspiracy'. Fake titties. Storm that health system. Not some dude's little pizza place. Not the fucking capitol dressed in dungeons and dragons hobo swag.
I know of a couple years other countries pulled their tamiflu stock before flu season because it was shown to have elevated risk of complications. No one noticed here. Everyone kept getting their yearly flu vax. Depoprovera? The Navy let me have that shit for yeeeaaaars. Oh man...our health system is so fucked. How we care for our people is shit. My mom's endocarditis was exasperated by Boniva. Actually...fuck all osteoporosis meds.

I will stop topping a month before flower starts here. While hunting through photos from last year to figure out exactly when that was, I found last year's plants in August:

We hear your health system is truly fucked here, but when a coworker spoke to an RN friend of hers who nurses in NY she said they were being well looked after. Bussed in, free lunches, safe patient loads, meanwhile our news was reporting anarchy. So which is it?
