Hey Jay, thanks! Based on how this winter is starting out here in the great white mitten....we're going to be suffering some extreme cold temps this season. I might order another one....have to see how the funds go this month. Maybe a Christmas present to me. LOL

Thanks Sweetleef, I hadn't thought of the tanning aspect. LOL

I have to do some DIY to my ceiling in the basement before I can hang the light though. I should have done all this before I started the grow, but I had taken so long on other set up issues that I just wanted to get the grow going finally.
I have steel beams in the basement, very large beams and they are directly attached to the under-flooring for the upstairs. There is no way to get a chain or anything around them to hang lights. Right now I have a wood frame built that the CFL fixtures are hanging from, not steady enough for my liking and I was absolutely avoiding drilling holes in these beams to accommodate. I have a new plan that is going to work out well. As soon as I have it finished I'll post some pics.

Congrats on the hid canna, you'll love it......the only thing better than a new hps rig is................two new hps rigs...LOL, I'm bad with the expansion aspects of growing, I'm working on some calculations with units, a unit would consist of a set number of lights and everything it would take to push the rig. If I get my calculations right there should be a point where the number of units is at an optimal level for my situation/s. Then when I want to expand I can add on "units", and predict exactly...or close....to how they will relate to the economics and demands of my production requirements.....should it increase or decrease.

So, If I'm reading these bulb charts correctly...a 400W HPS bulb with a wing reflector is going have about a 4' x 4' footprint?
If not, please correct me. I have everything set up to hang the HPS light. Just getting some minor adjustments ready.

That's probably correct spec's wise but maybe a tad less in practice realistically, in my experience at least. I would plan on no more than a square yard using decent sized pots; however, if doing a sea of green type grow or small pots and you add them time staggered one can move the taller ones to the edges and expand that out a bit.

Okay here's what I did to get a steadier beam to hang lights. As it was, I had a 2 x 4 frame built around the grow space and it was not sturdy, so moving lights up and down was a tricky thing to do.
I had steel beams on the ceiling as I mentioned earlier, that I did not want to drill holes into. So I used these huge clamps and put one on each of three beams. Then I bungied and wired a 2 x 4 really tight to the clamps. It doesn't look aesthetically pleasing, but it works like a dream and is very steady. It's not coming down. LOL

Then I put my 400W super HPS light together and hung it. I love how much light there is now!

This is a digital ballast too, I have 3 settings on it.
The amount of heat is going to be very helpful in the room, so I opened the curtains and set up the white movie screen to use as a reflective wall in front of the plants. Leaving the curtains open will let the heat into the room. I will check tonight and see how much the temperature has changed before lights out.

Looks cool! How high up do you have your light and is the hood enclosed?

Hi Jam,
it's about 20" above the plants. I looked at the charts KJC posted a page back here and it advised 18"-24". So I moved it until my hand didn't feel uncomfortable and left it there. It is not enclosed, it's a wing reflector. I have a photo umbrella on one side to help reflect the light back toward the plants. I might lower that a bit and move it closer.
Those rope ratchets that came with the light are sweet! No more chain to mess with. I might order some more of those for the other light fixtures now. :)

I was going by the chart below on footprints. It shows 400 HPS at 4' x 4'
Is that not correct? Right now it isn't a really big deal, there's only two plants there. But when I get the next round of clones in there to flower there will be more.

Also, I see I made an error on the light height. I should be at 12" or so. I'll move it down tomorrow and see if it works out alright.

I think that chart don't specify if it's for indoor growing or Supplemental light for greenhouse growing. All my books are in the dark right now. I can check tomorrow.

That's a very good point. It would never have occurred to me that there is a difference. I'll check around the net tomorrow too. :thanks:
