Will do when I get home. They are green...that's all I can remember from where I am right now. Seems like they came from walmart, you can buy them to carry around your goods in.

Hey Rain! thanks for all the info and I will PM you for that thread link. You know me by now...I like to "read up" on things.
I have a pic of the goldfish on my cell phone from last year, I'll see if I can get it to my laptop and send it from there somehow. yes, originally I started out to do hydro...someday I will do that. First grow I went with soil for ease of learning.

Rain was talking about aquaponics. I want to do one soo bad. the coolest thing about aquaponics is the ability to self sustain your self with foods both veggies and fish. My dad is into it and he has traveled to many third world countries to set up these aquaponic systems for communities in need. very cool and its the future.

Gotcha shottafire, I misread what Rain wrote and assumed it was hydroponics. Sometimes I read as fast as I type and miss words....on both counts. LOL

Absolutely :) I'm very impressed. No deficiencies so far :thumb:

I'm working on the hope that the aerobic nitrifying bacteria from the filter keep working in the soil.

There is also phosphorus and lots of trace elements in fish poo :)

Great! I'm going to drum up a few more tomorrow, my Mom has some stashed away.
Now, do I put holes in the bottoms for drainage or will they be naturally drainy? LOL
Nothing urgent, so don't worry about getting back right away. You are as busy as a bee with your videos right now on your own grow. ;-)

'Purty sure I remember a half gallon of milk getting tipped in one once, and it definitely drained. Took a while though. LOL
I'll get on google and start looking at real smart pots to see how they are used and constructed Shottafire.

I did find some good information on using these recycled bags as "smart pots", so I'm going to give it a go. I am going to try to figure a way to make the bottoms of them a bit rounder though.
Just FYI if anyone else is interested:
Here's a post off-site where someone gave some fairly good info on the bags: (he was thinking of using them for vegetable growing so was concerned on the processes used in the recycled materials)

I've got one more subject I wanted to touch base on before I call it a night, regarding my concern on my fading and yellowing leaves.
DonPaul.p had posted on another thread exactly what I was looking at with an explanation of what could be happening. Levernze question was posed to him on how to tell when your plants start to need nutrients, and here was part of his answer: (I made sure to ask him if I could copy that over here)

"....but if a get a really hungry plant or one thats grown quick then you can tell it needs nutes when the lower leaves start to fade to a lighter shade of green, they sort of look washed out and will eventually turn a light yellow colour before dying, this is sign the plants taking nutrients from the lower leaves so it can keep growing, i sometimes re-use the soil i grow in and have to use nutrients from day 1, so i wait until the plants tell me they need nutrients before feeding so i dont have any problems with salt build up, so if they start to look a lighter shade of green and the lower leaves are losing colour each day then its usually time to give them nutrients as long as their not losing colour due to been over watered,...."

I feel like now that I have started my nutes that this problem will resolve. I will give it some time and see what happens. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Edit: I held the darkest bag under and well off to the side of a CFL fixture and I don't see that there is enough light getting through there to cause any problems with the roots. When the plants/pots are where they should be for growing there will not be any lighting directed toward the bag pot itself anyway.
So, my personal opinion is that it won't be a problem. :thumb:

Another note on the yellowing, I have some purplish stems going on too.
Here's what I found today:
Nitrogen Deficiencies
Plants will exhibit lack of vigor, slow growth and will be weak and stunted. Quality and yield will be significantly reduced. Older leaves become yellow (chlorotic) from lack of chlorophyll. Deficient plants will exhibit uniform light green to yellow on older leaves, these leaves may die and drop. Leaf margins will not curled up noticeably. Chlorosis will eventually spread throughout the plant. Stems, petioles and lower leaf surfaces may turn purple.
Even more evidence that I needed to start the nutes? Hmmmmm I hope the purple goes away with time, but I'm sure the yellow leaves won't get any better. They just seem to get worse and I had to pick them off.
It's great when people tell you what it looks like it needs, but even better when we know why it needs what it needs. :-)
Levernz, you may well have been right on with your diagnosis of nitrogen deficiency!:high-five:

Isn't that the truth. No matter how much I've read I still go about so many things blindly - personally I learn by doing so I'm sure I'll make lots more mistakes. I'll probably be in the over 90 club by the time I can offer some meaningful advice!
