Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Do they really grow this fast?? Most of These toddlers seem to be exploding with leaves since yesterday. They will be official teenagers by Monday at this rate!:slide:
I'm going to hold off on taking pictures until Sunday so I can compare to yesterday.
One of them has a very slight curling on the edge of a couple of leaves, but I think it may have been a little heat stress because the fan wasn't getting over far enough. I added another small clip on fan to fill in the gap. We'll see if it helps.
Take care all and Happy weekend to you!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Keep up the good work young Padawan.........The "green force" is growing stronger inside you:thumb:

Agree with you I do!

I can't wait for those pics Canna! I have a feeling they are going to look good. I have one small tip for you as well, if you are not already doing it. take an old plastic bottle like a milk jug. Heat up a very small nail and poke holes in the cap. The way that this thing will spray makes it much better than pouring the water directly into soil. You hardly disturb the soil with this method. It also forces one to water slowly. Also of note I have heard anecdotally that this aerates the water somewhat as well. I also use the syringe to measure out ferts, it makes it so so easy.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Well, because I actually had time to myself today I decided to begin the LST'ing of the kids. I don't think they are happy with me today. ;-)
Here's some pics, please let me know if I've done anything incorrectly or any hints that I should do. Never have I done this to a plant before.:thanks:

The rest of them I'm going to give a couple days yet, they aren't quite as tall as these. Do you tighten the string up to bend them more as they get used to it?
I used the syringe to PH my water down, that works perfectly! and I made up a water bottle and put holes in the cap as suggested, that is SAH-WEET. Thanks!!! My water PH is at 6.2, is that alright or should it be in the 7's range?

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Hey canna- plants are looking good. Congrats on transplant.

I would recommend adding an anchor tie to your plants. It will keep most of the force off of the stem as it goes into the soil. This way the plant doesn't look like it's about to pull itself out of the ground.

A good picture tutorial can be found here:
How early can you start Low Stress Training - LST?

The red wire in the pictures is the "anchor" I am talking about. The black wire is what you already have in place.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Hi canna!

Great job with the pictures. It looks like the toddlers are growing up fast! You did a fine job with the LST. As far as LST goes you can do more if you wish. The point is to get side shoots to grow like the main branch does. Auxins which are located in the top of the plant dominate the other branches in a way. By lowering this point to the level of the other nodes (or lower) they are released from bondage! This way other branches will grow like a dominant branch and exhibit vigorous vertical growth. I want to preface this with, don't force it if the stems feel stiff. I have read that some strains are woody even early on. You can tighten slowly if need be. I would start with anchoring the branch:

Then you use a second (you can also add a third to distribute the pressure - my won idea) string to pull the plant over.

Check out this journal to see how aggressive with it if you like:

Rico is super helpful and friendly, I think you will really enjoy this journal if you haven't seen it already.

Ok as far as your PH goes, I could be wrong here, but I think you want to keep your medium as close to neutral PH as possible. I have read that 6.3 to 6.6 is perfect. I realize you are growing what is called a soilless mix, but it is not hydro, coco, or perlite etc. Here is a link that goes further in depth: Cannabis and pH .Your soil itself is a natural PH adjuster, your microheard living in your soil is constantly making adjustments too. Unless your water is really out there, You should not have any issues. In fact most people don't even test PH.

I hope this helps! +reps for the LST*(if it lest me!):goodjob:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Okay, I went to the links and looked at the LST methods and went down this morning and did the following:
LST82.jpg

I think I'm going back down tonight and adjust this one with the string more at the top so the bend is more sideways.

And the curled leaves is getting kind of worse. Any ideas?

Alrighty, and thanks! I did it this morning per the suggestions. :thumb:

Looking great canna, nice job on the LST. +reps. ;)
Thanks so much for the reps Stealthgrow, this is just too fun. :blalol:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I raised the lights up a bit to see if the problem is heat stress again. I held my hand under the light as suggested on a lot of the threads here and it really didn't feel that hot, but when I'm standing in front of the light and plants it feels uncomfortably warm. I know you are supposed to be able to put CFL's quite close to the plants, but there seems to be a lot of heat coming off them. It's a mixture of 2700k and 6500k, there are 8 bulbs in that fixture with three of them being 6500k. Hopefully I just have a fussy plant regarding heat. I adjusted the fans a little more too.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I think your humidity is too low. What are your thoughts? I would also take a small fan and point it straight up at the light, then feel with your hand again. :Namaste:
I'm pretty sure humidity was at 60% when I was down there last. I'll check again later.
I did point one of the fans up toward the lights, that was the small adjustment I made. If it isn't better tomorrow, I'll move the plant under the other light fixture to see if makes a difference.
I'm sitting outside on a beautiful sunny afternoon waiting for muskrats, (it's almost dinner time for them so they will show themselves very soon)the kids will have to be without momma while she takes care of pond pests. I don't mind one or two of them, but when a colony begins my pond sustains damage!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

hi mate, plants look ok, the lst also looks good, i just pull mine over a bit more each day when i do it until their where i want them, ive got one at the minute that ive pulled right over and also topped it so ill let it grow upwards now and that will give me 10 shoots growing up so should be a nice bushy plant when its finished growing,

when i put my plants under the hps they do suffer some light stress for a few days, i can normally have the 400watt hps about 8 to 10 inches from the tops of the plants with no hood, but when the plants are young it bleaches the leaves and can make the plants look like their needing more nutrients, so for a few days i raise the hps up to 1.5ft just so the plants get used to the lights, its the same thing we have to do when we plant outdoors, if we start plants indoors then move them out in the sun then they will die if you dont harden them up to it, so light stress does happen and it can kill plants if its not put right,

I have the "bushy" thing in mind, so I'm hoping that I do this right so it will happen. I really want to do the SCROG too, but I'll face that challenge when the times comes. I'm glad to know that I was right on pulling them a little at a time. I don't want to snap any kids!
Thanks for the notes about lights, I am keeping a tight watch. There will be no killer lights on my watch!:biglaugh:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Okay, my humidity is at 69% and the room temp is 72 degrees F. So It appears okay from that aspect.
I retied one of the strings closer to the top of the plant and while I was doing this I thought about what a pain it was going to be to undo the tape or untie a string every time I want to adjust it a bit.
I saw on another thread where someone used pieces of coat hangers for his LST.
I cut some and used them to draw the string down tighter. It will work for gradual tightening. The plants are way too young to pull those stakes up out of the soil I'm sure.

If I yak or post too much...let me know. Fair warning though, I'll just keep yakking and posting.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

yep sure is spam, the mods will remove him as im sure he has been reported by now,

i have found pipecleaners very good for lst, i get them from 99p stores and off the net, very cheap for a big bag, plus very easy to bend and join 2 together if needed, i poke a load of holes around the tops of my pots then i poke the pipe cleaner through then holes then onto the plants, i dont always do heavy lst i sometimes just use the pipecleaners to pull branches outwards so they get to grow out more before they grow up towards the light,

then if im pulling a plant fully over like i have with one of my ww x sk, then i attach a pipe cleaner to the very bottom of the stem and put it to one side of the pot through a hole, then i put a pipe cleaner in a hole on the opposite side of the put and use that one to pull the top of the plant over, once the plant gets a bit bigier it will be a bit easier to lst,

but looks good to me, have some reps my friend

Woo Hoo, look atchu! You got that big fancy MOTM title goin' on! Good to see that.:cheertwo:

Yeah, I think I must have been one of the first to report it. LOL They should pay for their advertising spots like the real sponsors do!

Thanks for the reps! I'm going to check the hardware store tomorrow on the way to work and see If I can find some pipe cleaners. Oh the things I threw away as a kid.... we used to make all kinds of things with pipe cleaners. My Dad could never find one when he needed it.:hmmm:
G' nite from my end of the world everyone. :-)

Canna when I first read this I imagined you on the porch with a rifle shooting at muskrats to feed your kids (human) for dinner.:rofl::rofl:
You don't eat them right?

Your plants are looking perfect! I am really proud of you Canna. I think that you saw the hangers in Ricorico's thread maybe. He is a master of LST for sure. I remember DocBud saying once that the slight turning up of the edges may be a sign of the most minute mag deficiency. I seriously would not worry about it at all, you are doing so so well. But I will have to try and hunt that down. Maybe DP knows. I think you are going to have a damn good shot at MOTY DP, I know you would have my vote. The site should be paying you! Maybe not a bad idea hu?

Canna, the pics you put up and your diy projects are one of the things that make your journal so good. The more pics the better in my book! I want to see a group shot soon! + reps for a beautiful little plant!
