Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I would not put any rocks into your pots for drainage, a soiless mixture with perlite and vermiculite drains quite well. it is only with soil alone that you may need additional drainage.
Good deal. I have some vermiculite here too. I will check the percentage in my soil mix and add some if needed. Thanks!

Question for all: I have one Dinafem Fruit Automatic seed, has anyone had any experience with this strain?

One thing that doesn't have any problem at all growing like weeds around here is my lawn, so I'm out to mow that...again. :-)

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

sorry not tried that auto strain, theirs lots of auto strains to try so you never know which strain does well as theirs way to many,

if your looking for big yields then go with big bang auto, average yield by growers on this site is 4oz per auto,

but then theirs autos that just produce an 8th dry at harvest,

so when you buy seeds check out the yields but see if its a sog yield, if it is then this means many plants grown in a small space, so could be 40 or 50 plants so 10g per plant then adds up to 500g of dry bud, so just read the yields that they say but autos will yield anything from an 8th up for 4oz or more,

so its difficult to say what you will get unless you find someone that has grown it, also is it a fem seed if its not then it could turn out male, so ill keep my fingers crossed you have a very nice fem, im working with autos at the minute to try and produce a big yielding auto, ive collected pollen from a big auto male and got 3 female autos growing, one is in flower and will be getting pollen tomorrow so il turn the whole plant to pollen, then the other 2 autos are in seedling stage but should be fem so if they grow well ill put pollen on them as well, i want to run some tests with autos so need plenty of seeds to carry on with the work im doing

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I had put lava rocks in the bottom of my pots when I started because I thought it would drain better. Now I am wishing I hadn't. On the other hand I don't want my plants to get any taller either, so maybe it was good that I did. I looked up your Dinafem Fruit Automatic seed, and it sounds like a great one:

Fruit Autoflowering includes Grapefruit genetics in order to achieve more flavour, resin and production, as well as, a more intense effect.

In addition, it is larger than other automatics and flowers in only 60 to 65 days top and produces abundant sweet-smelling resin.

Fruit Autoflowering is a dense plant with thick Indica leaves. Buds as sticky as honey. Thick glittering crystals of resin and the smell that produces, makes it a must for cannabis cultivators and enthusiasts.

It is a variety that stands cold weather fairly well.

We recommend, planting towards the last week of May, in order to harvest the last week of July, and in this way achieve unbeatable results.

Very tasty.
Effect; strongly sedative.
Average producer.

If it is lockout, I would wait for them to dry out, then flush and only give cal/mag for a couple weeks. I hope you are having a great three day weekend!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Thanks again everyone! I did find some pics on Google images and some info on the Fruit automatic. Sounds good to me, and it is a feminized seed.

I am a little confused on something. If I wait until the plants are dry, then do a flush...am I not actually causing over watering again with the flushing? Maybe I'm not understanding the flushing process. I've never done it before.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Over watering isnt too much water at one time it is watering too often and not allowing the roots to breathe
Okay. Gotcha
I took the weakest looking plant and removed it from the cup so I could see if the roots had rotted today. The roots aren't a bright white by any means, but they looked okay color wise. The roots had completely encircled the bottom of the cup, so much so that they appeared to be a rope. The soil mixture was damp, but not sopping wet. Now I'm wondering if these plants aren't root bound? I am so new at growing, I wish I could see something and immediately know from experience. And of course, forgot to take a picture.
I transplanted that one into a bigger cup temporarily, the poor thing looked like it needed some room.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

So, the more I think about this and the more I read and see....I really believe that in addition to the over watering and huge error of not putting drain holes in the cups (I'm still kicking myself daily for that dumb azz error), that the cups were just too small making for not enough soil and my problem was compounded with the roots becoming a circled mass at the bottoms. Yellowing/dying leaves are a sure sign of root bound plants, that much I have experienced when trying to grow flowering plants indoors.

I'm thinking I need to get these repotted as soon as possible. Whatcha think guys/gals?

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I find it strange that they could be over watered if root bound but Im no pro myself and still make mistakes like over watering and over feeding.

I say if you saw roots circling the cups and everything held together when you pulled them from the cups then absolutely transplant them but remember now you will have less roots and more soil so it will take even longer for the pots to dry so dont overwater again.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Thanks Cas,
I did check a couple of the other plants and it's the same thing. Very thick circling of the roots at the very bottom of the cups. I will be transplanting all of them tomorrow evening to the 3 gallon grow tubs. The one that I transplanted early today seems to have perked up already. The leaves aren't as droopy as they were.
I won't use those small cups anymore, I'll stick with the larger red ones and stack one inside another with the pebbles in between. That is going to give me the proper drainage on my next seedlings and plenty of soil to work with.
Did someone say this would be easy to start? If they did, I wasn't listening.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

over watering is when the roots are constantly wet and their getting no oxygen, this starves the plant and causes it to wilt and eventually die, the roots slowly rot,

now a flush you usually do a week to 10 days before harvest, but if your using organic nutrients then a flush is not needed, you also dont need to flush if you stop feeding nutes 2 weeks before harvest, but some growers do flush, the idea of flushing is not to give the plant water but to flush the soil of all nutes that are in it, if you had major problems with the plants due to to much nutrients then you flush the soil to start again with hardly any nutrients in the soil,

when you flush you flush with an amount of water thats 2 or 3 times the size of the pots, so a 3gallon pot would need 6 to 9 gallons of water running through it to totally flush the soil of all nutrients, you flush before harvest so the buds are pure with no nutrients or other chemicals inside them, it leaves the bud smoother to smoke but you wont notice much difference with organic nutes, but some still flush, i dont but i use organic nutrients but i do stop feeding nutes for the last 2 weeks and the plants just get plain water up till harvest, then when i am ready to harvest i let the pots dry out so the plant is not taking in any more moisture, i find this helps with the drying process, sort of speeds it up by a few days,

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Great information DonPaulP. Now I understand it. Thanks for tip on the last two weeks, I have read a lot of journals where they stop feeding nutes the last two weeks, but had not read about letting the pot dry out completely. :-)

BTW, you did achieve Member of the Month for August right? From what I could see you were so far ahead that there was no way you didn't see it through. I'm waiting to see that "Member of the Month" August 2013 above your avatar!:thumb:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

yep, im so chuffed to of won, i was chuffed i got nominated let alone win motm, ive had the 420girls msg me and ask me for my address and stuff like that so im sure they just need to edit my signature and add it above my name,
im amazed at how many votes i got, it just shows if you put the time and effort in then you get recognised for what you do, i must put 6 to 8 hours a day in on this site and sub'd to many journals and help pages now, but its something i enjoy doing and keeps my mind in the right place.

so its all good, cant wait to try some of the prizes, the sponsors really do put a lot into this site by offering prizes each and every month, it really does show the quality of this site and its members, ive never won anything in my life so im chuffed to bits that i won.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Well last night I transplanted all of the plants to much bigger cups until I can get the time to get them into the big pots and I will have to by some more soil. Funds are not there until later in the week, so I hoped for the best. I will be putting some in big pots in the morning if people will just leave me some time to myself! I'm sure you all know how that goes. LOL
I looked at the toddlers tonight and every one of them has perked up and there are no droopy leaves. They don't look like weeping willows anymore. They look nice and green except for the affected leaves from the sick time and a couple of those leaves look better too. I swear they look like they grew an inch (probably more like a half inch) taller too! I am really encouraged and I really believe they were root bound and needed more room and soil. I will try to get some pics tomorrow.
Happy happy:wood::)

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

sounds like everything is looking good,
Yeah, I think so. Now that I've learned 3 incredibly important lessons....
Drain holes
quit with all the watering
plant seedlings in enough soil to sustain their growth!
I hope they forgive me. LOL

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Okay, here's a couple pics of the vast improvement since moving to bigger cups:
This first one is just after transplanting them, kind of sickly...

This one is a day+ later:

And this is my Toddler Mutant Ninja Cannabis, still has wrinkly leaves but it perked up too

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I am so glad to see that things are turning around. You know the plant that was my runt for the longest time ended up catching all the others. Poor little girl had the most confused little root when she sprouted. I probably screwed something up I am sure. She was stunted for weeks while here sisters grew steadily. It is just amazing to me that she caught up. I think your girls will be just fine too. Just remember less is more, and we are here for you. There are plenty of people that have grown good quality stuff without the use of any fertilizers or amendments. I think it is easy to make things more complicated than they really are. It is called weed for a reason right? +reps for your recover!

"Look everybody! Momma got us all new sand boxes!! We have so much more room to play and grow!!" says one of the toddlers.

Here's how I transplanted. First soil in the bucket and moistened it with light cal/mag water, then put a cup into it for a mold and filled dirt around it.
Transplant14.jpg

Then turn the plant upside down and let it drop out of the cup into my hand. You can see the roots are already filling the bottom. It was definitely time for bigger pots.
Tranplant2.jpg

Then put the plant into the space formed and lightly fill the soil around it. I moistened the top layer with the same solution.

I'm going to be adding some more lighting when I get home this evening so they don't stretch sideways trying to reach. And then in a few days when they're settled in I will start some LST'ing. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Thanks Rain. I am inclined to believe that the plant with the wrinkled leaves might be a different strain than what it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be white widow. We'll see how it turns out, I have been all over google images typing in different types of searches looking for an example of this and cannot find a single image that looks like this plant. So, every grow has something interesting to watch... mutant toddler is mine I guess. :-)

I agree with you on the complicated thought. I try not to over complicate things whenever possible. If you sit down and really think through your actions leading up to the problem and logically sort things out, you will discover what caused your problem. :cheesygrinsmiley:
