Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

its difficult to tell with the smaller pots or cups, they dont hold much soil so the difference isnt much, you will find it much easier when your in bigger pots, i used to use the lift method but once you grown for a few weeks you will have a good idea when they need watering, im going about 5 to 7 days in my big pots without water, the smaller pots are going 3 days on average but sometimes 4 if the temps are high.

with the big pots when they dry out the compost shrinks so you get a gap all around the edge of the pot, this tells me their getting low on water and will need water in the next day or 2,

I shall chisel that information into my tablets when I get up on the mountain tonight and keep them as sacred. Thank you Oh wise ppls!:thankyou:

Whoever said "ignorance is bliss".....wasn't trying to grow a weed. Cuz, I don't feel one bit blissful right now.
However....one must always find a positive. That would be that I have stayed true to "noobism" by doing the one thing that most noobs do in their beginning grow.:blalol:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I wouldnt worry about transplanting yet either cuz they probably arent ready if you have been over watering. I killed half the seeds I ordered last year by over watering them but my temps were too low too so that made it worse. Those cups dont hold enough soil to give them much weight at all so it should almost feel like an empty cup when theyre dry. I would say let it go 5 to 7 days before you do anything else to them to make sure they really dry good. they should perk up once they dry out some. The little spots are blurry so cant tell for sure but usually those little rust colored spots are from calcium def. so maybe after they dry out good add some Cal/Mag but dry them out good first.

I think you are right on waiting on the transplanting, I had been pondering that when I read your post so we were on the same page with that thought. Thanks for confirming it for me!
I went down and put some folded paper towels in the bases so it will soak up as much moisture as it can, I'll check them again in the morning. Hopefully that will help some.
G'Nite everyone, or good day to you in your part of the world! :cheesygrinsmiley:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

i would not feed your seedlings nutrients until they are 4-5 inches tall and have 5 nodes growing, I would begin by giving them 1/4 strength nutrients.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Busy morning here with the toddlers. Here's what I did to hopefully help correct the over watered problem:
I carefully removed the top layer of soil, about 3/4", which took out most of the algae soil and green perlite. Then I added a thin layer of perlite and added dry topsoil to that. I still have the paper towels under the cups to help soak water up. Now I will leave them be and let them recover.
The following are notes for my own reference, a log if you will. I tried to download a program to keep a grow chart that KingJohnC had posted on another thread (sorry I can't remember where he posted that), but my old laptop won't let it install because it needs microsoft net framework 4. It's too old to handle it. I have a new laptop with Win8, but until I understand Win8 without getting frustrated I won't be using it for the charts.
Have a great day all!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Good deal now just let em be until they feel like empty cups then wait another day even. Ive had plants and seedlings that were folded over half dead from dehydration and come back once I watered and turn out just fine. I think eveyone probably goes thru this stage. We try to do the best we can for our plants but because were inexperienced we tend to over do things like feeding and watering. Hell I thought my plants in the tent needed water the other day and ended up flooding the floor of my tent so Im in the dry it out phase at the moment too.
Once you do transplant its gonna be he same deal. Your gonna have to get a feel for the weight of the dry pot compared to a wet or damp pot and its gonna take longer too especially until the roots fill the pot. Youve done the best thing you can do so far and thats taking the advice people here give you and learning from your mistakes like the rest of us do. I cant wait til you get to harvest these babies and try some of the fruits of your labor. Keep it up Canna youll get it all worked out

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I am probably still over watering and over nuteing. It is amazing to me that my plants are alive. With smaller pots the plants tend to only use the bottom half of the pot since the top dries so much faster. When you water I would bottom water to be sure you are wetting the entire medium. Small pots sometimes also have this air bubble on top when the soil gets dry especially. The top will look wet and the water will flow down the sides of the cup only and run out the bottom. You could always grab a moisture meter too. It is really tough to tell by weight if they need water. You can also try sticking your finger slightly into the soil, when it is dry it will fall off your finger easily, when a little wet it will stick a bit more. I have been waiting until my petioles actually droop a bit so I am sure the medium has dried out enough. The plants bounce back almost instantly just as Cascadian said. Just remember that 'less is more'. You are doing a great job of being vigilant. I know you are going to get things dialed in.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

If you are worried about overwatering, try picking up a moisture tester. You can get them relatively cheap and they are really simple to use.

The one I use was about $10 and works just like a meat thermometer. You just stick it into the dirt and it gives you an analog read out of how wet the soil is. Works great for figuring out if you have dry spots too.

Good Idea Hijinks! I'll order one today.
Question, when I transplant to bigger pots I was thinking of putting a layer of hydroton pebbles on the bottom of the pot to assist with good drainage. Good idea or not?
Good weed all!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

How about a true story while we wait for my toddlers to recover?

Lying fast asleep in my bed one late evening, I was startled awake by a very loud "KAPOW!" I sat straight up and immediately thought "There is someone in my house...shooting a gun!!" As soon as the thought hit me the cat came tearing across the bed running for cover, and then another very loud "KAAPOWW!" blasted through the house. I quickly grabbed the .38 I keep very near to me and jumped out of the bed. My heart was racing and my adrenalin was high. I crept out of the bedroom in the dark with the gun in front of me just like Agent Starling in "The Silence of the Lambs", and probably shaking just as badly. I slowly moved straight ahead from room to room trying to see in the dark and moving the gun from side to side as I inspected. I was waiting for the slightest movement. I made it to the living room and as I stepped into it my foot hit something.. I looked down and could see the shape of a shotgun shell lying on the carpet. "OH MY GOD, there is someone in my house with a gun!!!" I thought. Now the knees were weakening and the heart felt like it was going to pound right out of my body.
I moved slowly to the kitchen where I knew a light switch would be within reach of my elbow, I didn't want to take my hands off my gun. As I stepped on the tile floor, I felt something wet and sticky under my foot. I moved the light switch to on with my elbow and as I looked down I saw Red liquid in pools all over the floor. "BLOOD??? Is someone dead in my kitchen???" Now my eyes could see clearly, and as I gazed around the area.....
In the corner of my kitchen counter sits a wine rack....in that wine rack were two bottles of homemade burgundy red wine that a friend had given me a couple of months earlier. Apparently my friend did not do the sealing process correctly when he corked them. From what I could see the first bottle had popped pushing it back into the kitchen wall and the cork had landed about 20 feet away...into the living room. Which is what I stepped on. A cork looks an awful lot like a shotgun shell in the darkness.
The second bottle went just less than a minute later and did the same, when it hit the wall is what made the sound of a gun shot.
My entire kitchen was sprayed with red wine from floor to just below the ceiling! Sticky, staining red wine!
Needless to say my friend heard from me on the incident. The clean up took the better part of a day.
So, I laugh about it now. I really do. :laughtwo:And I will never allow another bottle of homemade wine into my house!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Thats funny. Would suck for sure to have happen but great story. I am a homebrewer myself and have heard many similar stories of loud popping noises and big messes. Luckilly I havent experienced it yet but I did recently have to dump some over carbed Belgian Tripel that just foamed everywhere once I popped the tops

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Really funny story Cannafan!

I was toward the back of a really large local liquor store one day when I heard what sounded like a slightly muted gun shot back toward the front of store where the cash registers are located. Similarly, I'm thinking "oh crap, this placed is getting robbed!". Turns out it was a bottle of craft brew beer from a small independent brewery that had blown up about half between my location and the registers.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

8/31/13 Notes:
Some of the plants have grown taller between 1/4" and 1/2" since last growth record two days ago. Four of them remain the same height but are spread out farther, WW3, WW5, MK3, and MK4

The yellowed and brown spotted leaves on some look like they've gotten some green back, however on a couple of them the two first leaves have curled a bit and the yellowing got worse. Will Probably lose the first set of leaves on a couple of the plants, WW3, and MK2. We'll see what happens.

Each cup currently weighs between 4-4.5 oz.
A cup with just soil was filled and weighed at approx. 2 oz.

What a waste for you after all that work! I tried brewing my own beer one year, was the worst tasting crapola I've ever had. Couldn't drink enough of it to warrant a hangover. Never tried it again.

Wow, nothing like stopping your heart for a bit, eh? If I was the liquor store owner I think I would be writing off that particular brewery for any future stock orders. The way people are packing guns these days....someone could have just went to shootin thinkin' there wuz shootin' goin on. :surrender:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

thats just way to funny.

im ok i got a big dog, if i hear a noise i send my dog out while i hide under the covers, if the dog comes back i know everything is fine, if i hear him ripping someone to pieces then i just leave him to it and go back to sleep, we dont have guns here but i got a big dog with big teeth, but if we did have guns then one would always be within my reach

with the nutes you wont need any for a few weeks, after you transplant you will still easily go another 2 weeks without any nutes, the spots on the leaves are possibly due to the roots been damaged by been over watered or due to the ph been slightly off due to been over watered, its more likely to be a nute lockout than def at this stage, more than likely caused by the over watering, either that or the soil your using is to hot for the plants but we will know much more once the pots have dried out and the plants start growing

when you over water it badly stunts growth as the roots cant get oxygen, if left over watered for to long the roots rot and it cant support the plant anymore so leaves start going droopy and then they lose the nice green colour, i know ive done it in the past, i over watered all my plants and im sure most soil growers will admit that they also did the same when they started growing,

so lets see how they look when they have dried out, im sure you will notice a big difference in speed of growth and the colour will also be a nice shade of green,

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I really liked your wine story. The craziest part is that they went off at virtually the same time. You sound like a fascinating woman. You must lead quite the life to carry a .38! Were you a secret agent? After seeing your CFL DIY I would not be surprised!

I think what DonPaul said about lockout is spot on. Have you considered starting some new seeds as a backup? You could always cull or give away the worst performers as space becomes an issue?

I used to have a big big dog too. All I had to do was say "OUCH" or point my finger in the shape of a gun and say "He's got a gun!" when someone was near me and he would be there forcing himself between me and the person with teeth bared and low growling. Loved that Dog!
The lock out issue can be reversed, right? I know I have read many a thread here with that problem and it seems they somehow resolved the problem in the end. I'm hoping for sure

I don't know about fascinating, thanks for the compliment. I will say I have led and continue to lead, a most interesting life. No secret agent by any means, but not exactly what other women would have chosen for their career paths. LOL And with two brothers and no sisters, I've learned to be the DIY gal all of my life. My uncles taught me how to carry a gun and to hunt, my brothers taught me how to defend myself. :-) I am also a firm believer that if you want something done right, do it yourself!

I had thought about starting the other seeds, but because I am so far behind schedule now and my home activities will be changing drastically for the next month, I am determined to see how these 9 plants will recover. If they get worse, I will start the other seeds. I have one seed that is feminized and one that is auto flower. I need to read up on the auto flower plants to see how they are grown and what differences there are in timing of veggie to flower.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I would not put any rocks into your pots for drainage, a soiless mixture with perlite and vermiculite drains quite well. it is only with soil alone that you may need additional drainage.
