Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

My brain activity today:

Subconscious: "The plants need water..."
Conscious: " Leave them alone."
Subconscious: "But they should have a drink every day like people..."
Conscious: " They aren't people."
Subconscious: " But they need it, they will surely die of thirst.."
Conscious: "Learn from your mistakes...let the roots work to find water which will make a stronger plant"
Subconscious: "But...I really think they need...."
Conscious: "They look healthy, right?"
Subconscious: "Well, yes.."
Conscious: "Then walk away."
Subconscious: "Maybe just a little bit....."
Conscious: " Walk away!!!"
Subconscious: "OKAY ALREADY! Sheesh! I'll go find something else to do then."

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

lol, stay away from the plants, i can see you now with a big jug of water ready to pour, put it down, stop and walk away.

nice light hood, thats exactly what i was on about, i made something similar but not as good looking as that so nice work with the hood.

just keep an eye on the temps as it can rise slowly with cfls but i have found them much much cooler than hid lights even when i was using over 400actaul watts of cfls, some say hid produce more heat but when i was using over 400watts of cfls i could keep my grow door shut all day, with the 400 watt hid i have to have the door open and can only leave it closed for around an hour or 2 at a push, so cfls keep temps down, they keep node spacing very clost.

i still use cfls now, i start my plants and clones under cfls for 2 or 3 weeks as node spacing is perfect under cfls, ive started plants under the dual spectrum hps and they just stretched but i think that has to do with the distance from the plants where as cfls can be within an inch or 2,

if you have a temp guage hang it so its level with the top of the plants as this will give you the best temp range, but i found with cfls all you need is a small 12v computer fan blowing on them and temps are perfect at just a couple of inches from the bulb, as the plants get bigger you may need some side lighting but only 1 or 2 cfls hanging down the sides will do, it just stops the lower branches from stretching.

you will know when the plant needs watering, the grow medium will shrink and a gap will appear around the edge of the pot where the medium has shrunk, or poke a finger down a couple of inches in the pot and see if soil sticks to your fingers, if it does they dont need watering, if its dry then give them a drink, depending on pot size you can go 3 or 4 days without watering but just check and water when you think their getting dry, dont over water you dont want loads of run off if any at all, the more run off you have the more you washing nutrients out the soil,

you can have the pots sitting in dishes so it collects the run of then the soil soaks it back up when it needs it.

sounds liek your doing a good job though and the set up looks nice, cfls work and work well, ive produced some very nice buds using cfls, im sure i managed to get 2oz off one plant but i did use lst and train it to keep it low but ill double check to make sure, as long as you can keep the canopy even then their is no reason why you cant have a nice harvest, theirs some very good cfls grows on here so its more than possible to produce some nice bud using this method,

have some reps for all the hard work in making the hood, i never ended up with anything as nice as that,
i just read your sig and it says your going with a scrog, thats perfect for cfls, you will get a nice harvest with that, as long as you give them enough veg time to fill the screen then it should produce very well indeed,

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

To check the soil moisture I got to thinking that it might be the opposite of baking brownies....insert a toothpick in the center and if it comes out dry the brownies are done. So I used a q-tip into one of the drain holes, if it comes out wet the plants needs no water. I suppose you could push the q-tip through the top of the soil too, but I didn't want to disturb roots doing that. :)

watching the Tigers game while the girls soak in some "sun" and a light breeze, and I'm nursing a summer cold. The worst time for a cold! Grrrrr...

BTW, thanks for the +reps!:thanks:

Hi Ma! 'Sup?

I'm going to have to get my good camera out soon so I don't get these blurry pics

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

looks good, just be careful if your having it out in the sun and under lights, they can get killed by the sun if their not used to it, ive put seedlings on my balcony before for a few hours in the morning when i get the sun, then when i checked i found some had wilted and died due to the heat, their ok if you harden them up to it by giving them slightly longer in the sun each day, like 30min the first day and an hour the 2nd and so on, its just id hate to see you have problems caused by the sun been to hot or to much for the plant

No worries, I put Sun in quotes to suggest real sun when they are really under fake sun. (the CFL lights, and the breeze is the fan) I see where that could be misinterpreted. LOL I won't be putting my plants outdoors at all due to bugs/snoops/hard water.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Good Morning everyone (or evening across the pond)!
Does anyone here have any experience with the Dual Spectrum CFL bulbs. Good/Bad/Ugly, any thoughts appreciated. :thanks:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Morning Canna.....
Sorry.........im no help on that subject at all:scratchinghead:
But im kinda interested as well........I would like to add supplemental CFL's vertically in my tent to increase lower foliage exposure.
I will wait for the experts to chime in with you.........

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Hi DD,
I've been all over the internet and really can't find anyone that gives an actual account of how the dual spectrum did for their grow or whether it's worth the extra $$. We'll see, I'll keep looking.
On a side note:
That final seed (the one I had to induce labor on) is really being shy. I have named it "Lil' bit". I can see the bend in the stem coming through but that's where it has stayed all day. I went in and had a pep talk with it. "Come on Lil' Bit... Come on out now. you can dooo eeet"
We'll see if it comes out to join the siblings in the morning. :)

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Not a whole lot to report right now, plants are doing fine and I did give them some water last night as they were dry. I will try to post some progress pics tonight.
I have a small container of super thrive, should I add some to the seedlings or just leave them be for now? Also, wondering when to transplant to bigger pots. When I have 2 sets of leaves? All of them have full first set and sprouting second set in the centers.
Thanks all. Have a grrreat day!

I would hold off on the Super Thrive for now. The Thrive Alive, I used on my clones when I planted them into cups, is pretty much the same thing and it seemed to be too much for them at such an early stage even though the bottle had directions for clones.

As far as transplanting goes you should give them time to establish a good root system and fill the cups which could take a couple weeks. Just depends on how often you water. Let em dry between and theyll grow faster than keeping them wet

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Thanks!:thanks:
I have been trying so hard to keep up with journals the last couple of days, and it's bordering on impossible! This site is just so extensive with activity.
But that is a very good thing.
Have a great day!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Hi Canna, I don't have the answer to your question either, but maybe hosebomber does. I read in the member of the month contest that he spends most of his time talking lights. I would post the question there or send a pm myself. I hope this helps. I had to stop subscribing to more threads since I can't even keep up with those who are subbed up to my journal!

Thanks Rainstacks, I put a PM in to Hosebomber. :-)

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

i cant help you either, not tried the dual spec cfls, the dual spec hps works well but with cfls ive always used a mixture of 2700k and 6400k bulbs with a higher ratio for each growth stage, im sure the dual spec cfl will be ok,
