Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg & More! CFL's - LED - HPS

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Canna, I use 2 cups each, the bottom I put a bottle cap or some gravel in, then in the top one, I put the drainage holes and dirt and seed. This allows extra water to drain out the bottom into the lower cup and you can just empty that... all in one pot with water tray :)
Okay, I planted the final slow pokey seed tonight using the 2 cup method. That is going to make it so much easier, I like it!
I don't expect that final one to break ground for a few days so I put her in a warm dark place. She looks so lonely in there. LOL
I'm going to have fun this weekend watching the toddlers grow. :)
I have to resize my grow room a bit, I wasn't expecting to have that many plants. I think my table may be a bit too high to accommodate full size plants in flower and the lights/fans. There is only about 4 feet of decent clearance from shelf to ceiling to work with and even if I do the scrog that will be pushing it kind of tight. That's going to take some work, but I may have to cut the table lower somehow. I have read the White Widow will grow indoors between 4 and 5 feet. I'm not at all sure on the Master Kush. I've read mixed reports on that one.
Any body have experience on how tall to expect the MK to get indoors without Scrog? Nirvana seeds on both the WW and MK.
I'm heading around to read some journals for awhile. I've subscribed to quite a few....certainly nothing near what KingJohnC does.:) Where in the world do you find the time???:geek:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

trust me its only a matter of time before you got some very fast growing plants, when the 2nd to 4th set of true leaves form the plant starts growing like a weed, they are slow for the first week or 2 as their is not much root development or leaf so as soon as it gets its leaves and roots sorted it will grow like crazy, im sure you will be very happy with the way they grow,

a big mistake new growers make is over watering, i made this mistake when i first started and wondered why the plants where growing so slow, it was only when i stopped watering that the plants had time to recover then they grew like crazy,

the roots need oxygen as well as water so if the growing medium is to wet then the roots cant get oxygen and roots will start to rot, hydro dont have this problem or dwc as your running air stones in the res but soil growers need to try and make sure its not over watered, under watered plants will recover in a few hours after watering

You can top and train your plants to fit in the space you have too. Flip when they reach 18 inches and they shouldnt outgrow your space. You could let them grow to 2 ft then top them down to 18 inches and make clones from the tops. Just something to think about unless youre set on making more room then that works too.

+Reps for you for what youve done to get growing :bravo:

Thanks! I had sort of planned on the topping etc. But not sure what "flip" is yet? I'll do some looking around today on that.
Have a great day!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Okay time for a noob question:

I have the toddlers under 6 25w cfl's, 2700 K
Should I mix in a couple of 6500K CFL's now or wait?

I'm moving my lighting around today, so I'll take care of that at the same time.
Have a grrrreat day!:)

By flip I meant switch lighting to 12/12 for flowering. Plants stretch at first after you change the lighting times and can double in size at this point so you wanna make sure you have enough room for that to happen.

Ahhh yes, sooner or later I'll get all these cannabis terms down for growing. LOL
Thanks, and yes I will have room for the flip. :thanks:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Hi Cannafan.

It appears no one addressed your question regarding color temperature of the bulbs during the vegatative period. Ideally you would want all or predominantly 6500K (or as close as possible) bulbs for veg. and then switch to 2700K during the bloom/bud period. With that said, your plants will grow under any temperature light as long as they have enough light.

Thanks TanR! I don't have quite enough 6500K bulbs yet, so I'll mix em' up until I can purchase some.
Have a great day.:thanks:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

its also a good option to have a ratio of 3 to 1 or even 2 to 1 with the bulbs
so for veg you would have 2 6400k and 1 2700k or 4 and 2 or 8 and 4,
then the opposite for flower, outdoors the plants get the full light spectrum, so indoors we would do better giving them both spectrums of light, just use more of the one needed for that stage of growth
6400k is veg and 2700k flower like mentioned above,
but a good mix of the 2 will be a good option plus it helps keep the lumins up when you got more lights in their

Alrighty then...I'm going to call this day 5 since planting. Here's day 5 pics:

A here's a sign that was crudely made for me in the flowering room. ('scuse the mess, it's still in progress)

I will do a mixture of the bulbs per DonpaulP's suggestion in a bit.
Suggestions are more than welcome! :thumb:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Looking great Canna! I had read about sanding the edges of a seed as you described to help it 'pop', It is good to read that it worked! I gave you some reps for the very organized and happy little grow you have going. I am sure it will be a little Garden of Eden very soon.
:thumb:

Thank you...thank you. Reps are a GOOD thing. LOL Have a great day. I haven't seen enough green today, so I guess I'll mow the lawn. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

when i have mixed my spectrum i have used 3x6500 kelvin bulbs and 1x 2700 kelvin bulb, i understand more red spectrum adds more stretch in seedlings.
That's exactly what I have set up, but the 2700K is on the end. I'm going to move it in between 2 of the 6500K. Thanks!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

a 3 to 1 ratio is good and 2 to 1 is also good depending on how many cfls your using. i ended up using around 500actual watts in total when i was using 23 and 30watt cfls, the bigger the plants get the more you need around the sides as penetration is not good,

if you hold your hand against the bulb and slowly move it away you will see that after just a few inches the light drops off drastically, yet 1 bulb can light up a whole room, but with plants they need the light strong so the more the better.

also with cfls the sides of the bulb gives off the most light, the ends are not giving out the most light so its best to have the bulbs mounted so the side or the bulb is facing the plants, that will give you a bigger spread of light and will work out much better, so what i did was have a home made hood above the plants and then when the plants got bigger i started hanging cfls down the sides of the plants so the lower growth was getting the light, once the canopy fills out the rest of the plants is left in the dark, cfls would work very well with a scrog but if you do some lst then you can increase yield as you can train the plant to get the most light

I actually switched the lighting over to the homemade PVC fixture yesterday, before I read your post, which houses multiple bulbs and I mixed in the 6500k with them giving great coverage over all of the 9 plants. I was aware of the side lighting of CFL's so I wanted to obtain maximum light hitting the plants. I have the light a couple of inches above the cups and haven't felt an issue with too much heat, so I guess I have that covered. I've also been rotating the plant cups now and then so the toddlers don't stretch in a bent fashion, that seems to have worked out well too. :)
If you didn't see it, here's the pvc fixture: (I've modified the top since I made it to a flat aluminum where no light is escaping out the sides)
