HAHAHA Canna shoes.... genius :thumb:

I always try to go in barefoot myself, but I would be all for having some slip-ons!

If you are using a spray bottle to water, make sure you really give them a lot of water at the time of feeding. You want to get all the dry spots in the dirt, most importantly the dirt towards the bottom. That will encourage your roots to grow deep to find the water.

If your medium isn't draining quickly, try adding even more perlite. Many people recommend a 1:4 or 1:3 ratio of perlite.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

What a rotten time for my home internet to go down! It went down yesterday afternoon and is still not back, the tech won't be scheduled until the 14th. I really needed some help yesterday, but couldn't get to the site to ask.
I came to work early to post.
I may have made a critical mistake, not sure. I got to thinking yesterday morning that I may have put too much water in those cups. Some places say give the soil a really good soak and some say to keep it moist and kind of dry. Unfortunately when I went down to check last night after work I tipped one of the cups and water came out. That told me there was way too much in there. After long hard thinking I decided I'm going to have to wing it. I went down last night and removed each seed from the cups, very very carefully, and emptied all the water out of the cups, then mixed the soil with some dry soil and put it back loosely into the cups. I set the seeds back in very carefully and topped them loosely with some dry soil figuring the moist soil would take care of that. i was hoping I could get them aerated enough to save them. Then I put the domes back on the cups and prayed.
None of the seeds except two looked any different than they did when I planted. Two of them did grow some.
I sure hope I didn't kill the rest of them by drowning!
So now I'm wondering about the light too, should I have the light on at all until they pop the surface? If yes, how long per day?
I checked this morning and there is condensation going on in the little domes so it appears they are getting warmth.
Any suggestions? I don't have a clue how long it should take for these to break the surface of the soil once they have been germinated and planted.
Help. :-(

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Do you have drainage holes in the cups?
They should be ok as long as you didnt break any tap roots.
The beans should break the soil in a day or 2 as long as they are warm enough.
Never panic and do something rash when you think you screwed up:;):
Usually, it makes a bad situation worse because you are not thinking rationally.
Too much water isnt going to hurt a "pre-seedling" at all.............
Keep calm and breathe in the air.......:thumb:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

A newly germed bean is VERY tender and delicate...........try not to disturb them any more than nesscessary.
I think you should be fine though.......
As far as the light...........you dont really need one unless you are using it as a heat source.
If that is indeed the case.........leave it on full time.

Thanks, I will feel better now. The nervousness comes from a history of over watering houseplants because I thought I wasn't giving them enough as they were wilting and dying after a period of time. Turns out it was probably the salt build up from the softened water.
There was a LOT of water in those cups at the bottom. I'm going to put some small drain holes in the bottoms tonight when I get home. I hadn't seen that mentioned in posts, the thought didn't occur to me. LOL Such a simple thing I didn't think of. Sheesh!
I was very careful with those seeds and did not break any roots. I didn't even touch the roots. :-)
Thanks again and have a great day!:thanks:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

After you put several drain holes in each cup.........water them again "sparingly" to moisten the top inch or so of the soil as you may have dried out the medium too much by adding more dry soil.
The tap roots like a very "moist" soil until they break the surface (the roots dont need any O2 at this point)............after they "pop" outta the soil and start forming their 1st set of true leaves, they like a moist but well drained soil (the roots need O2 at this point to start branching and multiplying)

Will do! I want to thank you for responding so quickly. It eases a little stress off my mind. I worked over two hours last night trying to get that internet working before I finally had to call the phone company, only to find out they can't come in for two days yet. Grrrr Very frustrating night.
I will be soooo happy to see one of those babies break the soil.:MoreNutes:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Canna, I use 2 cups each, the bottom I put a bottle cap or some gravel in, then in the top one, I put the drainage holes and dirt and seed. This allows extra water to drain out the bottom into the lower cup and you can just empty that... all in one pot with water tray :)

I agree with Danny though, the tap root will want water and honestly, until it pops and it up for a day or two, so will the sprout, but moisture isn't drowning either, so it's a balance game. I use a spray bottle on mist to lightly redampen the top of the growing medium when it's getting dry, then I water after they sprout only when they dry out.

As far as the light, you can have it there right now. As soon as the seedling is up, it will want light and not having the light there and close will promote stretching and weak stems. So light is good, how long to leave it on is opening up a can of worms, lol... but 18 on 6 off is my recomendation. Plants need their dark period, it's when the roots grow the most.

Sorry about the net crashing, happens all the time where I'm at, so I can sympathize... frusturating to say the least. :Namaste:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I agree with Rune on the light after they sprout.........18 on 6 off
You may also want to pick up a small 4" fan to direct a lil airflow to the seedlings to strenghten the stems.
Just dont point the fan directly at the seedlings.......let the wind bounce off of a wall or an object to "break" the force of the wind while still allowing a little airflow get to them.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Good advice you two! I have internet tonight...who knows about tomorrow. LOL (yet another hard reset 3 times and it finally kicked in for awhile)
I brought the plants upstairs to a warmer room because I decided it might be a little too cool in the basement right now. Even with the heat pad under them it wasn't getting more than 70-ish and felt cold to me. We only reached 68 degrees outside today and tomorrow is supposed to be the same with really cool nights toward the 50's. They are in a nice dark room with the heat pad and the temperature is staying around 79-80. I hope that helps. I did put some drain holes in the bottom of each cup and set them on top of the lids that came with the cups for the water to drain onto. And I also moistened the top soil of all of them as you suggested. I have a small fan all ready to go when they get ready for that. I'm a good lil' learner.:;):
Have a great night all!
We'll see how it goes. :-)

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Sounds like you've got them sorted... also sounds like the weather here right now in NW Wash. lol... most seeds germ slowly for me here since I don't have a heating pad right now, but your beans should sprout over the next couple days, unless they're a bit slow, then over the next week or so. Just remember, some may pop overnight, but most will come between 2 and 7 days and some can pop as much as 3 weeks later, though usually 14 days is the outside in my personal experience, though a friend just told me earlier he dropped 2 seeds and they didn't pop after 2 weeks, so he dropped a third and 4 days later he had 3 sprouts, so they can take even longer.

Good luck, you'll be so psyched when they start breaking soil ;) :Namaste:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Sounds like you got everything sorted out nicely. Great idea about the two cups method rune! I have abused my plants pretty badly and they seem to thrive despite my ignorance. The way I think about it in nature they drop seeds right onto the ground, and they certainly take a lot of abuse. Yet they still germinate! I watched an episode of strain hunters in which the growers literally stomped on a plant as a way to keep it lower! And the plant looked just great. These plants are very resilient and pretty tough to kill luckily for me :) I am thinking good thoughts for all of your seedlings Canna. :)

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

I started using the 2 cups because it's easier to be able to move the cups around one at a time based on plant height and not have to worry about a drip tray... solution based on not wanting to have more mess to clean up theory, lol.

Yeah, the plants are very resilent, but at certain stages quite sensative as well, it's an interesting dichotomy, kind of like the monocecious/diocecious tendencies of the plant, as well as it's multiple survival mechanisms. It really is an amazing plant :) :Namaste:

Peek-a-Boo!
Toddlers.jpg

The toddlers are finally waking up. I was excited to see this when I got my first cuppa this a.m. Yeah Baby!:yahoo:
Off to the fake sunlight they went to get that chlorophyll in action to make some green. I'm sure when I get home the rest will be peeking out and yawning for light.
Later!

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

While I'm thinking on it, do any of you guys know of a thread or journal here dedicated to breeding seeds and seed harvesting? I am very interested in that process and would love to see some detailed processes and pics.

I not sure which journal it is in but BigIrishDoode does some breeding you could chat with him. I am also interested in the breeding and just started reading a book called The Cannabis Breeders Bible. Im a 9th grade drop out with a GED and was never really into Biology in school so its a little overwhelming to me lol but you could look into that also
