Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

:nomo: Well, Lady "Craps-a-lot" (my cat), woke me at 4:00 a.m. cuz her food dish was empty. Grrrrr
So, I went to peek at the babies and at least two of them are hatching. YEY! I'm encouraged. :-)
Thanks for the response Hijinks.
I'll be working some more on the grow rooms today.
Later!:byebye:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Congrats on getting the seeds and starting the grow. Those some nice looking beans, they have a nice dark color to them.
Same two strains as I have going right now.
Good luck with the grow;)

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Thanks Stealthgrow. I feel like I'm waiting in the hospital for the little one (s) to arrive. LOL In the meantime, I work on preparation for their hotel rooms.
Been watching your grow, good job saving what you could from that first disaster and I hope your girls are doing fine when you return in a couple days.:thumb:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Hijinks, do you use the paper towel method? And if so, do you soak them in a glass of water first? I didn't soak them first, went straight to the paper towel. But it seems to have worked 'aight.

I soak my seeds in water for 12-24 hours or when I see first signs of the taproot. My first seeds I soaked for about 6 hours and then put into a paper towel because I wanted to be able to see what was going on. They were planted once they showed taproots. My next batch I put straight from soaking into dirt because they were already showing taproots after 18 hours or so.

When I get my next batch of seeds ill probably just soak for 12-24 and then plant into the dirt. You can't check on them as easily but you have to handle them less which is less opportunity to mess them up! Also- someone recently pointed out to me that some paper towels are not very organic and can contain a lot of weird byproducts.

You can't go wrong with any method as long as you are careful! Paper towels only I'm sure is fine, just becareful when checking on them. I opened mine one time on my shag carpet and spent 2 hours combing through it after dropping one of the seeds.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

you should make a post for your custom built DIY Compact Florescent Light fixture.

Do It Yourself

Great Idea! I want to post one with my homemade Scrog set up from the old room dividers. Working on adding string today, I'm trying to get the squares about 2". Thanks!:thanks:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Update:
I checked on the babies this morning and I must have done everything right so far. Every seed but one is showing a taproot, some very tiny and just poking through and a couple that are already creeping down the seed hull.

So, the ones that are already out almost the full length of the hull...would you plant them now, or wait until the hull is completely cracked open? They are still very thin and small, but my first time experiencing this. Usually plants come to my house to die. :biglaugh: But I have discovered it's that softened water issue. I should have much greater luck with them now that I know what the killer was. ;-)

Woo hoo! Happy girl, happy girl!:thumb:

Edit: I wanted to add just F.Y.I., the water I'm using for germination is Rain water. The PH and PPM were perfect. :-)

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Moving right along here...I have my seedling cabinet set up and ready. I used the former acrylic donut/pie display cabinet. I put the heat pad in the bottom and drilled a small notch at the bottom for the cord to fit through so the door will close tightly.
What do you think guys? Will it work? I have it set and going right now with a cup of water in it to see if it will build up any condensation in there. The white cups are what I will use to put the seedlings in once they are completely popped. I will probably tape a piece of black plastic trash bag around each cup to keep the light out of the root areas

Also, here's a pic of my soil straight out of the bag. Do you think there's enough Perlite in it? Or anything else that you might think of besides the lime that I plan on looking for today. I have a bag of vermiculite if I need it too

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Okay, I'm confused.:scratchinghead:
If I have germinated my seeds in the paper towel method, then put them in soil when the taproots are showing...Do I still need to keep them in humidity like a dome, as they were when germinating? Or do I just put them in the soil and then under the light for a period of time each day? I'm thinking the humidity dome, or in my case the acrylic cabinet, is used basically for cloning to establish roots.....but isn't that what we're doing when we take the germinated seed to soil?? I have been talking with someone today who has me confused now. (not on this site)
Anyone who can help there, I would greatly appreciate it!:cheesygrinsmiley:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

It depends on your environment and everyone will likely telly ou something different, lol. If you have really low humidity, keep them in the dome, if you have moderate to high humidity, you shouldn't need to. That said, when I lived in FL and LA, I didn't need humidity domes for any plant, except at very rare times, now in NW Wash. I need it for every clone and every sprout. For me, in this climate, seed goes into medium and since I'm using the party cups, I just put a small bit of plastic wrap over it or a 2L with the bottom cut off. Once the seedling is standing and has it's cotyldyn leaves, I usually remove the dome... if they seem to be struggling a bit, I put the dome back on for one more day.

:Namaste:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Thanks Dude! If I leave my dehumidifier off, the basement goes between 70-80% humidity. However the temperature in the room only reaches around 64 without any lights on. So, I guess I'll try the plastic wrap trick. That sounds like a good plan, and I'll set the cups on the heating pad.
Do the seeds look ready to transfer to soil to you?
:thankyou:

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Definitely ready for transfer to soil! Congrats.

It seems like humidity domes are best for clones as they lack roots, but for germinating seeds it is environmental, like rune suggested. If you will be around to check on them often and keep the soil moist, don't worry about using the dome. If you plan on leaving them for long periods of time, use the dome!

I haven't been using a dome on my recent seeds so that I can get my t5 closer. The dome keeps it like 6 inches away

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Can a person say "thank you" too much? LOL Well, thank you anyway!
I got up early this morning to do my planting and was surprised at how much the taproots had grown overnight! I still have only one seed that hasn't popped, I'll give it a few more days. But a 99% germination rate is damn sure okay by me!!
Lastnightofgerm.jpg

I got my canna shoes on and did the planting. (canna shoes are a pair of new cheap slip ons that are only allowed in the grow room, so I don't track any unwanted creatures from outside or elsewhere)
Here's a pic of the planted ladies:
SeedsPlanted.jpg

I did add a little more perlite to the soil mixture. When I was wetting the soil, I tried pouring the water in first and that just made everything float around for a minute. I switched to a spray mist bottle and that worked out much better!
I hope the light is close enough, or not too far away. I put a little dome over one of the cups to see if it gets enough humidity going.

Re: Newest of Noobs..from set up to growing and harvesting

Does anyone know of a way to edit an old post? I would like to edit my very first post with the strain, grow method, and all that stuff. Is it possible?
Thanks

I think after a certain amount of time "unknown to me", you can no longer edit your posts for some reason.
Nice work though Canna......may the Green Goddess bless you with her bounty:thumb:
