Brightlight's Strain Fest: Organics & LED

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Nice,,,,,, hope you got gentle rains down there. Nice shot there. Kind of looks like your girls are alittle further along than most of mine. Good thing or I'd have lost more to our T-Storms this morning. I kind of noticed some plants I am growing are in need of more nitrogen than others. And I find at time organics don't always have all a plant wants. All that does is give ya alittle extra or earlier a taste of yellow. Some times you kind of have to 'juice' a plant with heavy nutrients if they scream for it. I don't see any screaming here... Nice Babies Keepem Green
I feel the same way. I am having a hard time finding the right balance of nutrients for running a few different strains. I try not to use bottles but sometimes they need a good blast.
My buddy at the hydro shop just blessed me with the full line of earth juice and I will try it out when I need to

I hang my head in shame that I haven't been a regular visitor Brightlight. May I join the fun? I must tell you I haven't saved this many screen shots for later transcription anywhere else. Wow! I'm humbled. I found the answer to my question on langbeinite back a few pages here.

I could learn a lot from you. I already have. I like your style. :battingeyelashes:

[BQUICK UPDATE[/B]

Everything looks great. That GSC looks like she's gonna be a heavy hitter.
The 120 I lost was my ex wife.

Jeez....I totally missed your joke!:rofl:

Man I wish I had some outdoor space to grow. lovely ladies there!

Sure you will soon enough Atlien. You & others here would understand that I've picked my abodes with outdoor growing in mind. :goodluck:

Beautiful shots BL, love this channel. :smokin: Is your Chem 91 also smelling of lime?
Slight citrus scent, some minty, fuel creeping in. But my primary terpene profiles in general are mostly melon, fruit, floral....must be the guano diet.:thanks:

Awesome! I'll be watching every day!

Beautiful garden! What a nice variety.

Wowza!! :thedoubletake::thedoubletake:
Lot's of green eye candy gracing the pages of this journal!!
:thumb::bravo:

Thank you guys...appreciate it. Welcome Kodiak & Uncle. Glad to have you! Enjoying your journals too.:Namaste:

Thanks NCW. Yeah, I love the yellowing. Kept my eye on budding tips....all looking green & healthy. The fade out allows more sunshine as the days shorten too. Grimm...know what you mean. I always grow multiple strains so go on the lighter side overall. Works most of the time. Too hard to change routine for specific strains/plants.

Welcome Sue! Glad to have you here too! Thanks for nice words...but I'm lucky that there are savvy growers here who know far more than me. Please join right in.:welcome:

All right....a quick update. Just showing the 3 that are farthest along. Still have Lost Coast OG, White Master, EmDog, KillaWatt, Cheese XXL auto in bloom now with pics coming up.

Purple Diesel
This plant is maturing so fast I can barely keep up with the picture taking. Seriously, she showed 7/20 & 41 days later getting close to being done. Trichs mostly cloudy. Even adding a some transition days still quick. PD has passed up GSC as far as bud looking mature. GSC started flower 10 days before PD too. No more feeding for her or GSC. Despite organics, I still flush so that's coming up. 1st couple of pics less than a wk. ago, last one today.

Girl Scout Cookies
Slowing down a lot but still a little ways to go based on bud appearance. Crazy to me that GSC & PD will not make mid Sept.! Very early here. Still smells like melons, now bananas & more floral too. Wild ass pistils go in all directions. A fat girl.

Chem 91
I love this plant & strain. Chem 91 gets me excited. One month into flower. Always like plants that show the yellowish light green pistils. Great looking bud. Frosting up, very sticky. I think this outdoor version is prettier than her 2 indoor sisters were....just lacks size & bulk.

:thanks: Thanks for visiting. More outdoor flowers & indoor update before long.:Namaste:

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

May I ask, why do you flush?

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

May I ask, why do you flush?

Hi Sue. Thinking that you're asking because many organic growers don't feel a need to flush? Actually many do....can improve taste & smoothness. That's the primary reason....but there's more.

I started pure organic...dirt, water, plant. Nothing else as I knew nothing. No books, internet, other resources available. Everything was ultra secret & hush hush. Growers didn't dare talk about it...sometimes not even to friends. Then I heard...."Grower X says we should flush! Sounds good to me, he knows his sh*t! What's flushing?" You get the idea. I've done it ever since.

True that organics involves far less "salts", the removal of which is the most cited reason for flushing. But I don't know how organic ingredients are made...e.g., manufacturing processes, cleaning solvents for machinery, binding agents, anti-moisture & anti-bacterial agents, by-products, chelating agents, residual & packaging waste, contaminants, on & on & on?? Potential for lots of stuff I don't want or need. Chelating agents are probably in most liquid products...at least anything containing minerals. So if any of it can be flushed out, I'm in!

Back to prime objective of improving taste. Starting with enzyme drenches at transition & mid bloom, I start clearing out dead roots & other waste & at the same time boost flowering. I quit feeding plants by the end of 6th wk. so I have maximum time to "clear the deck." Flushing is like my grand finale to what I can do to clean & clear the root zone. By minimizing remaining nutrients in the media, the plant will start using its stored nutrients, sugar, & chlorophyll. Chlorophyll tastes lousy...plain & simple. That's why yellowing out my leaves is very important to me. The more the plant can use up these things definitely gives it the best chance to taste really good & be ultra smooth. Flushing is easy to do & kinda like a fun ceremonial thing that I've about made it to the end. It can help but never harm the plant....sort of like Pascal's Wager.:Namaste:

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Wow! I have recently gotten into organics and have never thought about a flush. They don't get food for the last two weeks but the soil is still chock full. Do you over water so there is runoff?

I have never thought about the processing of the ferts, although they are dry OMRI certified they still may have been in contact with something that wasnt.

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Yea I used to do the major flush too eventho Ive always used organic nutes. But my last grow I just fed them water the last 3 weeks and it came out fine. plants did fade some. Guess the good thing about organic is it gives you more options then synthetic. Ive never understood why you'd want to use them if your growing for yourself or friends.

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Nice pic's. I bought some Earth Juice before. All Organic recipe, just get ready for a slimy concoction when you add the bloom. You might just wanna plan of using a bucket for it alone. You'll see what I mean.......... Keepem Green

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

I don't do well with narcotic pain killers so even though they prescribed them for me, I won't take them. Only for 2 days at hospital. Got some odd looks from medical staff when I told them I much prefer home grown herb.:Namaste:

I couldn't help but laugh when reading this. It reminded me of when I was in the hospital for a surgery a few years back.
I told the staff the same thing and checked myself out early so that I could go home and medicate the right way.
;)

I'll take my herbal remedies over pharmaceuticals any day.

OUTDOOR UPDATE
Time flies & an update is overdue.

First a few quick hellos & replies....

Hello Uncle. Hopefully my hospital stays will be few & far between, but maybe in my lifetime a nurse will ask, "Do you want cannabis or narcotic pain killers?":tokin:

Thanks Capt. Your outdoor girls are looking quite beautiful as well.:welldone:

Always much to appreciate here, some fine looking ladies. Still eyeing your Chem, she's captivating - but I LOVE me some Chem and her hybrids. Peace and pot my friend. :Namaste:

Welcome back from vacation Chem Brother. I'm really looking forward to your next eye popping run so please let me know.:passitleft:

Wowsers! All those ladies are extremely beautiful! Must admit though that I am just a little jealous! *smiles* Good growing!
Will continue to follow...curious to see what kind of harvest you end up with!

Big welcome to you Big Sparks! Thanks very much. Glad to have you!:Namaste:

Mother Nature decided to torment the plants & me last week with a full week of 102º to 107º heat. Out of my control so I have to roll with it, but I don't like losing a week of flower development. I saw marginal bud development as plants were spending most of their time just surviving the heat. All part of outdoor growing.

A few pictures of plants that are ~5-6 wks. into bloom:

Chem 91
She's still slender, but her lineage & bud development have me thinking she might win my annual personal Grower's Choice award. She's producing trichs at a better pace than her indoor sisters did earlier this year. She smells pretty much like Chem should....a faint citrus changed to fruity & now a big dose of gassy, fuel scent is joining the ongoing fruitiness. I stopped the weekly tbs. of various high phosphorous guanos when she showed some slight burn. Sticky as heck since early bloom. Well, I better cool my jets so I don't get disappointed, but she's the one I have my eye on this year.

IMG_142117.JPG

White Master Kush
She stayed quietly in the background to a couple of the louder gals, but she's starting to show some of that frost from her notable parent, The White. She leans toward the green pheno & not the purple one (other parent is SoCal Master, which can be quite purple) that was the clear winner indoors.
IMG_141025.JPG
IMG_142423.JPG

Lost Coast OG
She's planted in same hole as her Grower's Choice beast of a sister last year. But she's much leaner & shorter. Sadly, I can see sunlight loss in what has been one of the top garden spots. A great strain though so I'm hoping for a good finish.
IMG_141125.JPG

EmDog
I had several males this year, so EmDog was a replacement that is a month younger than main group. I also floundered a bit trying to start older seeds, mostly suspect promos, as replacements. To test whether it was me or the seeds, I popped this fresh EmDog from my indoor plant this past winter. She flourished so I guess the old seeds were part of the problem & me the rest. This is her canopy at 3 wks. of bloom, which ended up darn nice with only 3 fims & no other training.
IMG_172116.jpg

Girl Scout Cookies
Harvest day pics from last week. I think I caught a good combo of pistil coloration, trichomes at ~80% cloudy, & what to me is the hardest ripeness signal to attain outdoors....strong loud fragrance still present when the 1st two have been reached & plant is ready to harvest. Oftentimes, I'm losing the peak fragrance by the time the pistils & trichs. are ready. She was full bore MELONS scent from start to end. Hope you're not tiring of my late afternoon silhouette pics.
IMG_168223.jpg
IMG_138527.jpg

Purple Diesel
Also harvested last week. I hit on the pistils & the trichs. (~85%), but the nice citrus scent had waned considerably. She never did smell like the Cali Sour Diesel that I know pretty well nor her Bubba side.
IMG_135824.jpg
IMG_137126.JPG

Purple Diesel Bud
I hang dry the entire plant in my garage to start the drying. The garage has been partially insulated to keep temps. down. But it was "No mas" during the heat. I think garage temps got into low 80's during the heat. The hang stage is usually 4-6 days, but after 3 it was already getting too dried. The next step is cutting off buds & into a box. This year I had to put several Bovedas into the box to slow drying & equalize moisture. Crap luck but it's unusual for me to be harvesting so early in Sept. when temps. can still be very high. PD was a pretty plant with lighter green & orange pistils so the buds came out nicely....good trichomes & color. Won't take any more of your time & will save a mini smoke report for next time.

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Looking good pal.

Sorry to hear about those high temps this late in Sep. It looks like the girls toughed it out nicely though.

I'm always memorized when looking at those lovely outdoor girls of yours.

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Hello Brighlight! :ciao:

Some good looking fare you've got there.

The weather here also returned to low 30's over the last 3 days. I was grateful because I started to worry about BR after the thunderstorms....

Hope your weekend has started well :thumb:

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

They look great, I'm always impressed how quickly they finish in NorCal, partly because you're closer to equator, and partly probably cause all these strain have been bred there for generations. Yep temps around 105F are a little bit too much for end of September, here I got them perfect now high 70s to low 80s, and flowers are puffing up after the rain! Maybe you could mulch, water on every day basis until heatwave breaks, and even add some calcium carbonate to improve transpiration. Anyway, the end is near :tokin:
