Brandon420's Living Soil 2022 Second Run

Made a huge huge pot of fern concentrate. Going to use this coming week. Also chopped a whole bed of plants that I wasn't happy with... I will be showing y'all how I end up repurposing that waste here soon.

I need to stop visiting other nursery... ended up taking home 500 more gush mint starts. Filled some smart pots and put 4 per 45 gallon pot... put the rest in the first bed of hugels up at the airstip.
Some other updates this week... dusted the whole garden in sulphur the other day.. so that was stinky. Trying a new fertilizer on half the beds... Roots organic terp n tea dry blend. Super stoked to see those results. Also getting ready for a whole set of foliars.
I got more pics to update, this is the only one I have transferred to computer currently.

Here's some freshly planted getting beat up by the wind already

I empathize with you I live in Chicago and it doesn’t get the name Windy City for nothing.

From my understanding doing some research, fern is very high in potassium and has decent amounts of calcium and other minerals. I may use it also as a feeding with my tea.
Interesting though to wonder what sort of pest management it may provide... I know fern contains a lot of different things healthy for digestion.. rich in antioxidants, fatty acids, etc.

So many of the things I use could use years of controlled experiments to really use all of nature to its potential... there is just so much that we haven't played with or learned yet in nature and growing. ,

Ok, thanks. I was more wondering, if mycelium is indeed what I have, can I harvest it in some way and maybe topdress my pots or add a chunk to my grow mix, or something else?

Or maybe it doesn't work that way, don't know.

Azimuth, good morning.
Absolutely add the mycelium in the soil!!! I added 50lbs of cubensis mycelium inoculated on wheat berries into one of my dep beds for the first run. Side by side to the bed next to it, same strain, the bed with added cubensis mycelium out performed the other bed with at least 50% faster and more growth.

Hey all! Please Do Not forget to click on the pictures to see the description/title of the picture if you are using a phone device. Otherwise the description should naturally show on the computer. I use the photo descriptions to do a lot of the talking in my posts.

In his book 'Jadam Organic Farming', Master Cho says of fern (which he refers to as "bracken"), "Like Ginko, it has excellent pesticide effect."

-and-

"The following ingredients have a strong pesticide effect in ascending order: sunchoke leaves, sunchoke tubers, ginko leaves, ginko fruits, and Korean Parque flower root. Bracken can replace ginko. Oleander can substitute KPF root. JHS, made from ginko fruits, controls almost all pests and has an excellent repellent effect."

Wha your garden is so big can only imagine how long it takes to train them all!

updates on the current plants... and planting a few new gush mintz to fill the whole first greenhouse with just gushmintz. Wasn't happy with the outcome or the genetics in the bed, so cut them down to replace with the gush mintz.
If you click on the pictures, they usually have descriptions.

That seems such a waste. I know you recycle it but I can think of a better outcome. lol

There was nothing wasted, just timed saved from harvesting mids. Can't sell mids around here, it just wastes the farmers time and space in storage. Plus effort trying to sell.
Besides, I had premium plants to swap them with.... plus the original plants I clones myself they were practically free other than time.
I needed a spot to put the extra premium starts too... and if I replace these plants that won't produce quality, I'm putting them in a hugel bed I don't have to spend a lot of money on to fertilize and get through the season. Just plant, water, and spray as normal..

But depending on perspective, it can be seen as a waste in one way or another.

Well of course it’s not a waste to you. You being a wholesaler but to someone who grows 4-5 plants it’s a big difference. I understand what you’re doing and why. It’s just I never seen a operation like that before.
