They’re sweet cars - the 5xx series of the same period used to scare me with its moody looks as a kid. Our next door neighbour had the E30 M3 - only available as a left hooker (LHD) and we we’re in the UK where we drive RHD, he sold it after a year, it was rapid but just didn’t feel as safe driving on the peft in a LHD car.
some guy in the UK just bought all of the last e30 m3 shells left in existence. they don't have any vin numbers so you need a donor car to get one on the road.
the m3 was never meant to be marketed in the UK or a number of other markets. bmw never wanted a rhd version. the 6 is much easier to live with as road car over the s14. the m3 doesn't come alive until well into illegal territory.
a friend bought an m3 few years ago before they went stupid expensive. it's a handful around town, and really droney on the highway, we both prefer the 6 for a daily. my car is modified with chip, cam, headers, lightweight flywheel, and it is still a better town car.
He got a Maserati Ghibli Cup Bi-Turbo after that. Took me and my Dad out the night he got it. Wow that thing was quick. I was 8 years old or something and loving it.
It was also a super safe car. Because it was only on the road for about two weeks of the two years he owned it. Just constantly broke down
He went back to Beemers after - my Dad of more limited means got an Alfa Romeo 164 Twin Spark Cloverleaf about then. The only Alfa Romeo never to break down in 5 years!
we really never got the massys or alfas back then. you'll see a few modern ones but nothing that falls into the classic category. there wasn't enough money around here for folk to be interested and there is zero for any kind of dealership support.
even my e30 would have been rather rare when new.
