Bassman59's 1st Grow - DWC/LED - Pray For Me!

The wonderful roller coaster ride of the first time DWC. It's like waiting for the wife to have a baby. Drama! I can say you are following my first DWC to a T, and I bet your going to pull it off. I also did the Hydrogen peroxide root cleaning three weeks into flower and then had smooth sailing to the end. I made my chiller out of a counter top refrigerator, a Harley oil cooler, a truck heater core, fountain pump and a timer. Worked though. Best wishes and good luck on ya.

I used to be in the HD business and had oil coolers laying around. Divorce took care of that. But I like the idea ya!

Day 6 Flower:

Well, plants seem to be taking about 1/2 gal per day now. Temps have been good. Roots on bigun are darker than the rest interestingly. Yet they all look ok I think. Added 1 gal today of just Bloom, voodoo, hygrozyme and calmg. No grow nutes today. Res change in 2-3 days anyways, depending on my schedule.

ppm 1240
ph 6.2 **this morning at lights on before feeding
res temp 65.6
temp 75
rh 42

Last two days upwards growth seems less on the bigun while the others have moved closer. Light is 18" from bigun so 1-3" higher on the others. But they all seem to be upwards and mobile.

I have 1 plant I totally missed the fim on that basically looks untopped. Oh well. Another looks near the same but bushier. The rest have 2-5 main nodes from the main stalk. For Mrs. Bigun I cant even find the main stem unless I use two hands to clear away 4 stalks and lots of middle leaves.

I think Bigun got just a tad of light/heat burn when I lowered the light a bit too much a few days ago. I marked the leaves in red boxes on one pic for your thoughts. Take notice too of the bottom left red box. Thats the tip of a leave. a little nute burn?

The little blue square is hard to see but it's female calyx.

I feel good about this grow now. Feels like it might come out good! :thumb:

wow.. what an awesome read. This journal is uber instructional. Thanks Bass. quick off topic.. is that bass (as in Fender Jazz) or bass as in stinky fish? I'm a bass player.. that's why I asked.

Ok.. again.. thank you so much for this (you and everyone that has contributed). Hopefully I'll not make the same mistakes. I'm sure I'll have my own set of ohsheet moments.

Can't wait to see the results. I need another light in the room and have been talking to Donnie... looks like the light is awesome!!

Oh.. and =rep for the awesome journal!

Stinky green monster bass rat!

I'm a total newbie grower, so I dont know how much I would call it instructional. I havent even been around mj in 35 yrs, but trying to do something to help elderly mom's glaucoma and Alzheimers (and a couple other ailments) has brought me here.

If you have questions about the light, room, whatever, feel free to ask or PM/ If I feel like I have something to offer from what I've learned so far you'll get it.

Thanks for comin along for the ride!

I may do another DWC because of this thread. I went out to the garage and found the old home made chiller. It was still sealed. I didn't use a pond pump, I used an inline electric fuel pump and circulated Anti-freeze. Does a real chiller recirculate the solution in your Res?

I like the old fuel pump idea, nifty. Used to have a few for the old drag bike too. oh well, another world, another life.

Post #113 shows a cpl shots of the chiller I have.

Both of these tubs have a gravity drain feeding a "T" that leads to an external 396 gph pump. This pump, feeds directly to the chiller, then returns to the upper "T" to fill each tub. No other reservoir.

I'm having one small issue in keeping both tubs at same water level. Seems the front tub stays higher. Not sure why. I'm slightly moving the tub angles a little thinking the fill "T" may adjust it more evenly. It isnt a big deal, but I'd like to see them more even. The difference between them appears to be less than 1 gal. With roots deep it isnt huge. But I'd like to see a little more perfection before I expand. It could also be my flexible drain lines to the pump are the cause where one is draining slower do to angles or positioning. I should have put the drains and fills on the ends of the tubs rather then mid.

The more I think about it, the more it seems that if I expand I would need to add a reservoir. "T'ing" two tubs is one thing. Four is another story.

I really like doing it this way. And I feel like it isnt necessary to have big 3-5 gal buckets for 1 plant each which requires more room and more light used more inefficiently. Ideally, 3 plants in each of these buckets x 4 in my tent (4'x4').

If you dont have a chiller with temp control, I would think starting with a full mock up and running for 48 hrs without plants would be ideal. One 24 hr cycle with lights on and one 12/12 light cycle to check res temps.

I filled the hose and radiators with the antifreeze and put one in the little refrigerator ( the heater core) and the oil cooler in my res which was a 48 quart ice chest. After some experimentation I had a timer run to a battery charger which ran my fuel pump which circulated the antifreeze from the frig into the oil cooler and back. The two plants were Skunk #1 and became trees practically. This was at least 15 years ago and all the neat things we can get now like good nutrients were way too hard to get. I used battery acid for PH down and diluted Miracle gro and epsom salts for nutes. Ahhh the good old days! I used a 400 watt metal halide vertically between the two plants bare bulb. It is almost funny what we had to battle back in the "day".

Day 8 Flower:

Res change day.

Going full bloom nutes today.

Ingredients for Bloom soup:

AN Sensi Bloom A & B: 16ml/gal
VooDoo Juice: 8ml/gal
Humboldt nutrients Ginormous: 3ml/gal
Hygrozyme: *cant recall
Calmg+: 1tsp/gal

PPM: 1350
PH: 5.6

Did much better with humidity this week. Ran between 41-45rh most of the time. Temps running 81-84f during daylight, 75 during nighttime.

PPM during the week ran about 1250 avg. PH was a bit higher this week around 6.0-6.2

Girls drank about 3 gals for the week. Growth was very nice! :bravo: I had to move the LED up 2-3 times, I can't recall. Interestingly, all the two week older plants grew at a higher % than Bigun did. But I adjusted height based on her.

Clones seem fine. I spray them daily a cpl times with a very light B52 spray and have 1 with 2 long roots out the bottom of cubes. ** clones pic below, the white in pic is only water reflection from flash after foliar spray.

Lookin good there Bass! Cant wait to see some nice distinguished hair-doos on those tops in a coiple weeks! Theyre looking very healthy, clones as well. So have you decided exactly what youre going to do with them?

um.. grow them?

:bravo:

No idea yet mb. Just those thoughts I mentioned before. I got 1-2 weeks before I need to panic and do something for them. I prefer to procrastinate then make a decision.

Saw one of these for sale at my local Hydro shop yesterday. It was one of the first LED models I'd seen on a store shelf. I asked the clerk what he could tell me about it and he said "total bullshit. I bought one and got nothing but tiny pop corn nugs. $1600 totally wasted. Good for veg but the light coverage is so small it's not worth it for that either."

I hope you do better than he did. There is this mentality here that if a company is sponsoring the site then their product is automatically good and that doesn't sit well with me at all. If this product demo yields poor results does that mean SG will be removed as a sponsor?

Heisenberg,

I suggest you look around the site some more. I did a fair bit of research before buying LED. There are numerous very successful grows currently going on and finished grows within the last 6 months. And not just on 420mag. Go look around the net.

It's fairly apparent my grow is going well. I'm 9 days into flower atm, so more will be revealed no doubt. I'm also a newby grower and have made some mistakes, which if you've read my journal you'll see I talk about them. Yet this grow seems to be pretty healthy.

Maybe your clerk is just a dumb shit. Or maybe it was a lousy LED product he had in the store. What brand? How many watts? 3w single chip? 1w? 2w-2chip? What were the light spectrums? Or does he even know or did he look that over before hand? How high did he run the light over the canopy? Did he go hydro or soil? what about nutes? There are a ton of variables to consider before you can bash a specific technology like this.

Example: If he ran the exact same strain that he had success with before. Using the exact same medium-grow method and ONLY changing the light, we would then want to know if it was 1 watt or 3 watt leds. THEN, if he set a 3 watt led to 12" above canopy I promise you he had a shitty grow. As well, if he set it to 30" his grow would be crap. Unless you "qualified" his response, you're going off terrible information.

Mini update-

6 of 8 of the clones have really nice roots. I only lifted the cubes from the tray and they have all come through the sides quite strongly. I'll do pics of them another time.

As for the girls, wow. Just wow. One of the plants that is two weeks behind bigun from seed has just caught up with the big girl! I had to move the light up another 5 clicks today. Of the other 6 that are 2 weeks from seed behind bigun, they have all grown substantially more as well, but still 1-2" shorter. Interestingly, the bigun seems to have slowed upward growth a little bit maybe, but is still bushy as hell and appears to be starting some hair. Might be my old man eyes though.

What brand?

It was this brand, Stealth Grow, that's the point. After getting home I checked to see if they were a sponsor. Their site lead me to your thread.

EDIT: What struck a cord with me is that I could tell the guy genuinely felt slighted. He spent 1600 bucks and he was pissed. As for doing my research, I have. Here and around the net as you suggested. In fact I think I'm following most of the journals here with LED in the title. I've seen successful LED grows but not from this particular brand.

And yes, your grow does seem to be going fine. This is not a personal attack on you or your ladies. That being said I don't think even the LED skeptics will deny that they are great for veg at this point.

I understand what you are saying about the mentality, and there is some truth to the over-zealous nature of the members here when it comes to sponsors. Much of that is healthy, and much isn't (it's healthy in that the sponsors here are playing a vital role in having a forum like this at all).

I've never grown with LED lights, but I must confess I've spent some time looking into it, and the better LED lights do seem to be sponsors here. And, as Bassman stated, there have been some very nice grows and harvests with newer generation LED's. Granted, this technology is just catching up performance wise in my opinion.

Personally, I'd love to grow with one of the newer technology LED lights like the one Bassman is using (but it'll have to wait 'til i'm in a better spot financially!) I've SEEN that they DO produce. It's the cheaper ones that you need to avoid or limit to the veg room in my opinion. Just my 2 cents. :)

Oh, and I really wonder if some of the people who've not had success were using them to their full potential. I agree that this is an emerging developing technology, and it's tough to beat the HID lamps if you can control heat, etc.
