Bassman59's 1st Grow - DWC/LED - Pray For Me!

but i will be doing hydro test next year, i'm sold on that and the future of LED

haha, good stuff.

Well I picked up a tub to hold all 8 clones. I'll go uber light feeding on them. prob transplant and cfl them in closet Sat.

Just a quick couple questions at almost the last minute since I like to procrastinate so much.

I bought a 16 gal tub from wally world yesterday for my clones to transplant into for veg. They will be fine for a while but eventually will be WAY too crowded. But for now I need to conserve space, electricity, & $$ on equipment.

I want to slow down their growth. I dont want them to get monster big 2 weeks before current grow is out of the tent. But I do want them ready to go into 12/12 when I do clear out this grow and can move them into two tubs.

I dont want to have much heat as cooling this tub without the use of the chiller will be even harder than earlier in this grow. This tub is just too large to drop 1 gal ice jugs into those cooling tubs I used previously. This tub fits into the cooling tub, but not enough room to add jugs to outside. I'll use cfl's for veg during this time period.

New tub measurements at top: 24.5" L x 17" W.
8 clones in 3" netpots

Questions:
1. Using dual CFL ( y adapter) bulbs in those hooded clip on type hardware store lights, how many lights would you suggest using to veg out for 5-6 weeks slowly to cover this grow?

2. in general terms, how low of a feed schedule would you suggest to use on a 5-7 week veg period like this? (remembering I can go massive big with 8 in one tub)

3. Any other thoughts or ideas that come to mind would be awesome.

Update tomorrow after res change and transplanting clones! Girls are looking great!

I veg under dual CFL's using the Y in a shoplight just as suggested. And actually your plants will veg pretty fast under them. I am in a similar position as I tried a new soil mix for vegging and wow! I have them in 16 ounce party cups and they have been topped twice and are 30 inches tall at present, all 8 of them. My vegg room is only 2' by 2' and I have the tops tied back against the walls to keep the plants off the cfl's, I only have 48 inches of headroom and I am topped out! I mixed the soil one part Diamentaceous earth, one part perlite and three parts STA-GREEN graden soil. nutes were added via Osmocote plus, Ironite supplimented with Carl Pool BR-61 lately as the Osmocote is running out. I had hoped the small cups would slow things down but not so much it seems. I am using 4 CFLs, 26 watters in my 2'x2' space.

Put ya finger in that dike!

Day 15 flower.

Res change day. After drain-flush-clean-replenish, I went to working on setting up for clones transplant. After maybe 45 mins I went to the tent and RUHRO, the floor is being flooded! :bravo:

It wasn't terrible. Probably lost about 1 gal of nutrient. But it was a little mess to clean up and now I'm working on evening out the flow between the tubs to the external pump-chiller. I never mentioned it before but I previously had to do a bit of drain valve to "T" adjustment because the tubs were not draining-filling evenly. Oddly, I may have adjusted a valve during res change and forgot or didn't realize.

Thank god for water proof flood bottoms on these tents.

So I noticed this week a small bit of nute burn at the very tips of some fan leaves. They ran about 1350ppm during the week. So this week I lowered my nutrient mix to 75% of schedule. I wasn't at full nutes last week, but this dropped the ppm to 1220 or thereabouts.

I've let the light stay a little lower this week too. At 17" I bring it up to about 19" above tallest girl. As I mentioned before, we have a new tall girl. She's one of the two weeks behind gals sitting at 19" at her tallest point.

Buds are starting to form nicely now. It's early still, but as you can see in the pics they are flowering. All the gals are fems too! Thank you nirvana.

This week I did a weak ona bucket too. I didnt drill holes in the 5 gal bucket. But I did drop a fan over the top of the bucket and it works really good! I have maybe 10% of an ona tub in the bucket with an about even layer of water. The bucket is outside the tent. If I close the door to the bedroom for a number of hours and enter the room I smell only Ona. Once I open the tent I of course smell the plants a little but after a few mins I have to get pretty close to them to smell them. They are pretty stanky w/o the bucket.

I took one pic of roots. Hard to do with the balancing act and one hand on camera. But as you can see they are marvelous.

Some of the pics are pretty purple because of the intensity of the light I guess. Even with the flash. I can only seem to get past the LED colors if I get pretty close and the flash is able to take over.

I'll be transplanting clones in a while to another dwc in closet after I post this. Still have some setup things to do but the tub is all cut right and ready. I'll do some pics after I finish that. Maybe start a 2nd journal for those too. I'll post here if I do.

Hey bassman

Super job on the ladies :cheertwo:

Thats something i miss about DWC access to all them roots!

I would love to see them ladies in there true beauti Twelve has a realy good tut for balancing the colours on your pictures unless you are like me and using your phone to take pics it should work for ya.

:peace:

Ya, when I feel up to spending 12 hrs learning it I'll read it. I saw some of his talk about it but it's all so greek to me. I actually bought a new camera for this journal. Just a simple $125 type camera on sale from newegg. But learning adjustments if you dont speak the language is kinda a drag.

I promise though I will do better pics by the end of this grow. That gives me 5-7 weeks to procrastinate.

Oh your pics are great just id love to see there true natural colour! I was under the impression that you just took a pic of a white background to even the tone but iv never done it as im using a iphone to take my pics...

Anyways nice work geez

Revenge of the clones!

Got clones and tub all done. The closet isn't 100% but she'll do. The pet store was down to only one 5" round air stone and a 3" so I grabbed them. Would prefer to have 2 x 5" round.

For now I'm going with ice jugs in the tub for temp control. I hope to rig something better for when the roots get down into the water.

Going with light feeding at 1/4 strength. I'll do some more research and decide on how much as we go.

PPM: 360
PH: 5.8

Gotta look for cfl height above plants info too.

Here's the babies:

On these clones, we have 1 pump with a 6 hose hub and 8 plants. I have 1 clone (middle front) with barely any root, and the front right clone without a feeder tube. I'll try to find a 1/8" t for them Tues or so. In the meantime I'm hand feeding them.

I'm not going to stress over loosing them if it happens. Four plants per tub in my grow tent tubs is a little crowded anyways, 3 seems perfect once they get big.

I'm reading up on a bunch of threads around the internet about defoliating. This tends to go against the grain of Jorge Cervantes, and tulips tutorial on dwc. But I'm the newby here so I'm going to read up more on the subject. I may try it on the flowering grow on 1-2 plants.

Any thoughts on this topic?

If I go for defoliating 1-2 plants, which ones? The smallest in hopes of helping it or a medium that may be shading the smallest? Two medium sized?

I have just started defoliating myself so not massively up on knowledge on this subject but mr smith has some pretty interesting takes on pruning to manipulatate node growth.

I have started heavily pruning in earlie vegative to alow better light penatration to lower growth so far iv noticed a healthier shrub with more lateral growth I am yet to defoliate during flower so I don't have much info in the way of what might happen but I am realy interested to watch your experiments and and see how your ladies take to it.

:peace:

I'm currently reading up on some very large threads in other locales on the subject of defoliating. I think I'm going to do 1-2 of the clones as defoliated plants from early veg. They will be same strain, same pheno, same grow. This should allow some decent comparison and learning.

Side by side natural v's defoliated .. Will be very informative there are alot of diffrent opinions on if you should cut fans or not I wasn't a believer in defoliation but I had yet to test other wise so I decide to cut the lot back! In the end it all grows back prety rapid and thick I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what your test unfolds.

Yes there are some journals out there and threads around the net that explain it well and seem to debunk the theory of not touching the leaves. It's too late for me to do a lot with this grow in that regard, but I have plucked a few big fan leaves today that were hiding bud sites from light. Being the newby to this whole grow thing, I still worry about doing too much or not in the right place, or not at all.

I've been learning so much since coming here and reading all over the internet I start thinking all confused. I'm probably being too gullible on the topic. Fortunately I do try to look up stuff to support some of the claims out there.

I wonder, if there was a newby of the month (or newcomer grow of the month) contest how I'd fare. :cheertwo:

I think I'd have a decent shot at making a run for some freebies!:thankyou:

if the criteria for winning was unsurmountable mistakes, then I think you'd have trouble winning!!

I hear you man i have been growing for a few years and in soil iv had some nice girls but hydro can be tricky i have had over a year and still havnt found what works for me guess we will all get there in the end!

Holy Moses!

1 plant grew over 2" in 30 hours! Wowzors. Light is now just under 17" above that bud. Gonna leave it there for the next 4 hrs then mins b4 lights out I'll raise it back up to 19" for tomorrows daylight.

Questions:

The pics below are asking about trimming fan leaves, when and where.

I'll comment each pic.

I'll probably post a new thread somewhere in the mag since I dont expect a lot traffic to see this here.

This pic is Au Natural. Would these two fan leaves be leaves to pluck because they are so big and are probably covering some light pen?

The 2nd pic refers to the leave I marked in blue arrow which is a node above the red arrows.

On this pic, would we trim the red star leaf? what about that stem-leaf my finger is holding up?
