Bassman59's 1st Grow - DWC/LED - Pray For Me!

I'm like Steve traditionally, so I don't have a lot of advice. This is also just one of those topics that everyone has a different answer to, and opinion on. 420fied would be a good resource for sure, as he does a pretty thorough defoliation.

You'd be fine yanking any of those leaves you marked, frankly. 420fied and others have proven that good results can be had even with almost total defoliation. This grow, I'm doing more defoliating, and I would have pulled any of those. I'm defoliating primarily at 20 and 40 days, but selectively in between as well (when prominent budsites are being blocked, etc.)

Oh, and your plants look great by the way!

Thanks for your support guys.

And WOW is all I can say about the plants. Another 1.5" in growth the last 24 hrs. And bud sites are really starting to show prominence.

As a newcomer to this, it's kinda exciting.

Bassman59, your plants look great! I am with SteveHman and Xlr8 mostly. I thin out the fan leaves if they are blocking bud sites that will receive light if the leaf was removed. Also, I bring up the bottom 2/3rds of the plant by week 3 of flower. Then, at week 5 I start removing fan leaves that are blocking bud sites and then totally remove the fans within the last week of flower. Hope my opinion helps. Props for your grow.:bravo:

Thanks twenty. The overgrowth of bush is nuts now. I can't see the top of the tubs from above. Nor can I see between them anymore. I'll trim some at end of week I guess. That'll be 21 days of flower.

Bud sites are sure looking good I think.

It is exciting and amazing (sometimes stressful depending on your ceiling height) the rapid growth during the first 3-4 weeks of bloom. I've had >3"growth days a few times. Definitely the funnest part of a grow in a lot of ways.

I'm just kinda amazed every morning when lights go on. Tallest plant is 24" now. This babe was 19" 3 days ago and she's two weeks behind the original 1st plant. Weird, makes me think I have done something to stunt the growth of others. However, she isnt a 4 top from fim either. I didn't get my topping done well on that one.

Nice plants Bassman. Don't be afraid to trim some fan leaves. I trim the large fans on day 21 and 45 of flower. Is there anything specific you want to touch on in regards to defoliation? Many will tell you not to do it but I have done it on several occasions with no negative effect on yield. If some of the large fans are blocking bud sites tuck or remove them so the light can get to your bud sites. I'm certain that different strains will react differently to defoliation but my strain doesn't seem to mind it. Don't be afraid to give it a try.

Best of luck!

Mid week update:

Well all I can say is wow again.

Tallest plant is now 26". That's 7"+ in 4 days. As you can see buds are really forming now. And it looks like a few may get kinda big if I'm reading them right.

I've added 3 gals of nutrients since res change on Saturday. They are really drinking it up and no signs of nute burn. Temps have all been in range, humidity good. PH has been a bit high. As much as 6.5 and requiring more than normal to lower. But been keeping it in the 5.9-6.1 range for the most part. PPM has fluctuated between 1120-1210. I'm fine with that, as last week at 1350-1400 they got just a smidge of burn.

Not exactly bud porn, but some smexyness nonetheless.

Looking very nice in there. Those buds are looking like they are going to fatten up and fill in all of that space.

That's awesome to hear. I am getting worried my yield won't be enough. Thanks for the encouraging thoughts.

Hey bass, glad to see youre enoying the glory of your first grows transitional stretch! I love watching it. Im a personal trainer when it comes to these ladies and i love tying em down, bending, and doing everything i can to keep a flat canopy, and when the stretch begins, its like Tetris when the game starts speeding up. But its really fun.

Just a suggestion, and i dont blame you if you dont, but what i might do with those clones you got is Start LSTing them when they get say 6-9 inches taller. This will do 2 good things for you: make it possible for you to keep them in veg longer while you wait for harvest and give you more canopy space filled with less height.

One thing id note: i dont know if you mentioned your future plan for these clones but if you dont plan on keeping them in this tub their whole career, youre going to have to move them soon before the root mass of each one is too big to fit through the hole and/or the roots get tangled with eachother.

Your plants are looking beautiful. You should be proud. Not many pull off a first grow using a DWC, especially that big, so well

Hey thanks a bunch MB!

I hope to pull off the all in one tub till I harvest on the clones. I know it wont be easy to manage the roots but with some tender loving care I hope to, and make the transplant to two tubs as well (after this harvest as you know).

I already fimmed 2-3 of the clones, and it's about time to do some others. I don't know if I'll LST, but it is most certainly an option and in my train of thought when the time comes.

I am doing a bit of defoliating on a few of the clones as well. Hell, I may do a darn near full defoliate on 2-3 of them to compare in the end.

I tried bending one of my plants in flower and instead broke it. I tried the tape repair method but bumped it 2-3 times after and basically broke it off. I have done tiny amounts of bending. I need to work on that, just more gingerly.

Time will tell on everything though ya?

I'm convinced that excess root mass is not only useless, but makes demands on photosynthesis production that might otherwise go to flower production.
Big roots work well in un-tilled soil. The search goes out for minerals and water. With constant water & perfect fertilizer, the bottle-neck of the stem yet limits the amount going to the factories. I would wager that root pruning would increase production < heresy?

Some crops are girdled by cultivators to improve yield and/or quality.

All right you two boneheads, coolit. I'm too new and still gullible:MoreNutes:. You could cost me a grow!

Looking very nice! I think the LED light makes em look cool. My grow had more nute issues as I was trying to figure out just how much 15-30-15 Miracle gro to make my solution with and I let the veg state go twice as long while experimenting. As to defoliating I do just like the other guys said, remove whats in the way of other bud sites. I have done full defoliating a couple of times and still question the value of it.

Did you decide to do a DWC? Using the home made HD chiller?:cheertwo:
If so are you going to do a journal?

*btw, 12 more posts and you can pm people if needed. Feel free to answer each question in a new post. :thumb:
