Bassman59's 1st Grow - DWC/LED - Pray For Me!

24 hrs since I've seen my babies! I can't hardly stand it.

The cause of the clones: Initially upon putting the clones in root riot cubes I had one that totally bent over forming a upside down U. All the others were immediately wilting of course. I sprayed them and the dome and dropped 2 reflector cfl's with 2 23w bulbs each about 8" above. Within 30 mins the fall over guy was standing up, and all the others were no longer wilting. I've sprayed them and the done about 4-5 times since then and they look fine. I'm keeping the dome closed for humidity and they only get fresh air when I remove it for watering.

I know it's only 24 hrs on the clones, but it looks like they are going to do fine.

Hey bassman!
Grows looking first of all! But anytime you clone, expect that wilting if they have some decent length stems. They will almost always go down then spring back up. I like to consider it them saying "oooohnoooooo im dying.... O wait, no im not im good. Cool." :) but if i might suggest something, clones dont need very intense light. They actually want LESS light. More light promotes more photosynthesis but less intense light promotes the rooting process. You dont have to, but id say even move the cfls up another 6 inches. Or maybe move one up and leave one, see which one roots fastest. Just my 2 pennies.

ya but | | = 6"

They were actually a bit more than 8" above. I just raised em up, tied then measured and that was kinda an eyeball measure with a tape.

So, what have I learned?

1. Dont get paranoid! MJ is a sturdy plant. If there is a problem, there's probably a simple cure. Relax.

2. Res temps are crucial! Keep em low and your plants will thank you and not develop problems, disease, etc. Under 68f is ideal.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide (h202) makes foamy bubbles! There's nothing wrong, it's cleaning like it should and suds will go away in time.

4. I like hygrozyme!

5. RO water NEEDS Cal-Mag. If there's mag deficiency, add epsom salts, foliar spray with a epsom salts water mix until Mag uptake is fixed. Nutrients do not add enough cal-mag to make up for the zero cal-mag in RO water. A short burst of ph at 6.1-6.5 during call-mag addition after a deficiency ensures best Mag uptake.

6. Don't worry about PH getting slightly high from optimal. It's normal and doesnt need constant adjustment of .2-.6 ph. Chances are it will fluctuate down some anyways. Wait till it gets more outta line before adjusting.

7. SH nutes in the Bubleponics (miss spelled for reason) kits do not like RO water and will be the demons of massive ph swings. I like the AN Sensi Grow A & B and B52, and Voodoo juice. PH swings were minimal with these nutrients.

8. Cleanliness is next to godliness. Every res change (once per week) clean the bejeebus out of EVERYTHING! Replace air lines. Flush well, clean again! Take filters out of water pumps and clean them well! Soak in h202 while cleaning other parts. Add an external filter bag to water pumps.

9. Preparing nutrient mix before draining means plants will be out of water for less time. Plants love the huge oxygen shot they get out of the water, but if they'll be out more than 20 mins or so have a ph correct plain water foliar spray at hand and spray the hell out of the roots. Good time to wipe down netpots exterior too.

10. Record your data. Check PH 2 times daily MINIMUM. Record PPM, PH, Res temp. Recording height is optional. Make notes of res changes and any other findings.

11. Don't over soak beans when transplanted! The cubes only need a trickle! This no doubt reduced my yield 50% from placing me two weeks behind to get new seeds and re-germinate.

12. GrowStealth LED lights rock! Dont be afraid to lower the lights a bit! I firmly believe I actually was too high to get the shorter, later plants to stretch. When I moved the light more over them and lowered that end of light they started to move more.

13. Humidty is an issue in my dry ass climate. I need to get more humidty. These plants like much more humidity than I gave them.

14. ASK FOR HELP! Probably the most important thing of all. Don't be a know it all. Do your research first, THEN ask questions. If I research my "issue" first I will be more familiar with what people are talking about. Ask those that have been there before me. Stay humble.

Ok, there may have been more that I learned, but these things are what come to mind. We're only 1/2 way through the process, and roughly 1/3rd of the grow duration. I'm sure I'll learn more. Hell I may even learn how to take close ups!

Thanks to all thus far for your guidance. :Namaste:

If its all good with you im gping to paste this in stevehmans lessons learned from a first time grower.

yes of course MB, hell I'm even flattered. Happy to give back a little of what has so freely been given to me.

WEEEEEEE! TIMES UP! LIGHTS ON!

Just finished 36hrs lights off and we're now on day 1 of flower!

Did a drain/clean/replenish. Roots looked sweet! Well, ok a cpl looked so so but fresh hygrozyme, voodoo juice, should be fine. I was really impressed with how some of the roots looked almost bleach white (really low lighting).

About midway through the 36 hrs lights off I went into the room the tent is in to check on clones in the closet and wow, the room was stanky. So I mixed up about 2-3 tbsp of Ona gel in a quart tuperware and added water to about 1/2 of gel lvl. Today, entering the room the only smell was fresh linen. I'll have to get that ona bucket made up, but I need to grab a bigger drill bit.

So I prepared nutrients about 3 hrs ahead of time. All ph'd and ready for my cleaning.

My nute soup this week is a blend of 50/50 veg/bloom at full mix.

Sensi Grow A & B 90 ml
Sensi Bloom A & B 90 ml
B52 45 ml
Voodoo Juice 45 ML
Hygrozyme 100ml
CalMg+ 12 tsp

PH: 5.6
PPM 1230
**no water temp yet on fresh change**

So, am I supposed to be excited by the new bright lime green colors after the lights off? Is that the look of transition to flower? I'm hoping so because it's on almost all presumed main cola sites. :bravo:?

So here's 10 pics after my 36 hrs lights off but before the LED was turned back on. And just a cpl of clone shots.

Yes this top pic is just 3 plants

Bass, what are your daytime/nighttime temps and PH?

The light yellowing on the new growth looks like either a manganese deficiency or possibly a reaction due to large temp fluctuations.

It also looks like you've been cutting the tips of some of the leaves, so I'm guessing those leaf tips were either dead or yellow.

Also, just a suggestion, but those plants are pretty bushy and you may want to trim some of the lower fan leaves and non-productive growth to help improve circulation and let the plant focus on developing the "good stuff". I'd also trim some of the larger fan leaves up top that are blocking light to other bud sites. Pruning fan leaves is truly a matter of preference, and some growers are dead set against it, but I'm a big "fan" of it! :)

 I do see your PH is 5.6, which is fine. Do you check between res changes?

Well Mr K, they have been lights off for 36 hrs and certainly didnt have high temps during that time. We wont get a true daytime nighttime temp/ph till tomorrow after 1 full cycle.

I havent cut any leaf tips. There were some leaves I totally clipped off as they were bad from that mag def earlier. And still a few stained from it.

I'm sure you can see where I took some clones from the bigun down at the bottom of the stalk. I have done a small amount of thinning. Presently since I know they are due for a huge growth spurt I kinda want to see where they go from here for a bit then possibly trim.

I do have some leaves with black (not brown) tips. this bothers me a little bit, but again I'm thinking watch what goes on the next cpl days with the new nutes & light schedule.

My pictures probably don't do justice, and the flash may be a bit too much. I suck at pictures. So it's probably settings of some sort too.

Looking good Bass! Light green tops and plants standing straight up reaching, are two things I've noticed when I do 36 hours of darkness. Not an issue at all. My thought is its new growth and lack of light. Did you measure height before and after 36 hours of dark? They probably grew and inch or two!

you are 100% correct sir. at 10 hrs of light now and all the color is back in those. They are still reaching, but I presume that will change.

And yes the growth is nuts already! I dont want to say 2" only because of some amount of reaching that will probably subside.

oh forgot to answer Mr. Krip.

Yes, I check PH AT LEAST twice a day. Sometimes more. checked night time temp/humidity and it was 81f 41rh

Bass, I understand the biology of extended darkness right before harvest, but am not sure I understand the logic pre-flowering? I know others do it, but biologically speaking I don't see the benefit. Yes it might induce flowering a little faster but in my mind this is at the expense of healthy growth as exhibited by the yellowing you observed when the lights came back on. Am I missing something in regards to this practice?

hell I dunno! I just follow directions!

But all the color came back within 8-10 hrs too.

It forces the plant to begin the flower period sooner. That plant takes longer to transition from veg to flower when just switched to 12/12. Is how I understand it. I don't have a biological or scientific explanation for it.

Side by sides have been done here on 420 that show the results.

The wonderful roller coaster ride of the first time DWC. It's like waiting for the wife to have a baby. Drama! I can say you are following my first DWC to a T, and I bet your going to pull it off. I also did the Hydrogen peroxide root cleaning three weeks into flower and then had smooth sailing to the end. I made my chiller out of a counter top refrigerator, a Harley oil cooler, a truck heater core, fountain pump and a timer. Worked though. Best wishes and good luck on ya.
