Babygirl’s Sour Livers DWC Hydro Grow Journal, November 2021

Woo hoo! First two leaves are out! Teeny bit of membrane on the one leaf, so I just put a single drop of water on that. Gave all the rooters jus a little drink. Maybe tomorrow or Tuesday I may have another?
If you put a pebble or two under the rapid rooter, it lifts it up and prevents the bottom of it from sitting in the water. Water use a pipette by the drop along the edge of the rapid rooter. Do it a few times a day and you you're fine. The sponge only holds so much water, that's the nice part of them.
Take a pipette again, and a few drops of your distilled water on the Helmut. Once it softens a bit, it can be slid off neatly.
Now, should I re-create the journal since I have a new strain and new lights, or just see if the mods will rename this one for me?
Just got to your first post, click report and ask that the name be changed. It happens and politeness goes a long ways :)

And congratulations on the new bean pops!!! :high-five::cheer::party:

Tx @Rexer! I’ll do that.

The seedling tray’s cells actually have holes in each cell so excess water can drip down into the drip tray, but also so water can wick up if needed. I’ll take a peek at the bottom of the rooters before I go to bed and drain the tray if necessary

Yeah I have the same ones. Works great, just be careful not to let your roots grow into that drain hole and those seedlings should be golden :thumb:

Uh oh! Noticed a problem tonight!

One of my buckets has algae growing on the hydroton - NOT something I want to put seedlings in! The buckets have only been running tap water for the last week so I could gauge average temp and humidity in the tent, so if I need to clean the hydroton that’s not a problem. Here is where I need the help:
  1. How do I CLEAN the hydroton (vinegar? peroxide? something else?)
  2. How do I PREVENT this from re-occuring? I dont remember the hydroton growing algae on my last run (but I was also using Hydroguard and +life for beneficial bacteria then).
Tomorrow I will be hooking up the new light, adding single air pumps for each drip ring (to help improve bubble action in the bucket), set up my spiffy new camera, etc. I can clean the pebbles then.

Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

Great news on the sprout(s) ,babygirl!
I wish I could help with the algae problem, but hydro is pretty much a mystery to me ...
@West Hippie is the guy that would know your answer, but I don't know if he's on here now... I'm sure he'll stop by tomorrow though..
Fingers crossed for more sprouts!

Thanks Carcass! Appreciate you tagging another DWCer for me! Pretty sure @Rexer also runs hydro. I cant remember who else off the top of my head though. *mental reminder to note who all specifically runs hydro*

Im just happy to have a sprout at this point! Lol

Yeah, that always makes my day too!
It's the hardest part of the grow for me, I'm definitely "sprout challenged" ... :)

Same here - once they’re established I’m ok - until then its pins and needles all the way!

West had a busy day yesterday, I'm sure he will be around as soon as he gets the chance...he will know how to help you and your algae issue, 110%! Sorry, wish I knew anything about DWC to help!

Tx Krissi - I have no doubt I’ll get advice that will be helpful! Come spring time Im juat gonna toss 1 seed outside to fend for itself and see what happens - thatvor give it to hubby and say, “Go ahead, ‘just stick it in dirt’ and see what happens” *lol*

The algea is caused by the nutrients being exposed to light.
As long as your feeding from the top, algea is a possibility.
You can make a plastic, light proof cover, I repurposed a empty dog food bad to make covers last year.
As soon as your roots hit the res and you stop top feeding the algea should stop growing.

Cleaning hydroton: don't use vinegar. A good soak in h202 (3%) will rid the algea. I've actually boiled mine clean before...it makes quite the stink, but works.

Thank you! Soak in straight H202 or a mix? I was also given the suggestion of bleach (as in running 1ml bleach/gallon through the whole system).

Yup cover them up peroxide all the way or 3 ml of bleach per gal run tru ur system will clear it right up remember bleach evaporates so have to ad bleach every other day !

I’ve used both wen something is not right I was a huge h202 fan this run I’ve ran with bleach a friend told me to try it I have n think looking good but a good soak n h2o2 I would run it tru the feeder also will do the job

Thank you both! I will start this today after I get some work done this morning (gotta love being able to telework!)

If your leaving the hydroton in and adding bleach. Don't add in hydroguard or any other beneficials till the bleach or h202 has had a chance to dissipate.
Got it :) - thanks again!

Day 2 - first true leaves are just starting to show!

??? SURPRISE ???

So while I’m waiting on new seeds, I thought this morning I really didnt have much to lose by trying yet another set of seeds that were in the fridge as well: Mephisto Genetics Sour Livers. But I tried a slightly different approach this time.

At 9am, I took a mini Tupperware container, put 30ml each of 3% H202 and distilled water in it, dropped 4 Sour Livers seeds in and put it on the heating mat covered with a towel. I also took 4 untouched rapid rooters, put them in the seedling tray, and put in just enough distilled water to reach the bottom of the rooters in the cell portion of the tray. Throughout the day, I did drive-bys and if the water was all sucked up, put in that same amount of water again and repeated every few hours until they wee all well hydrated, not drenched, and not sucking up the water.

At 8pm, I took a look at the seeds and I’ll be damned if 3/4 hadn’t cracked their shells and were showing just the teeniest bit of tail! So, not wanting to risk drowning them, into the rapid rooters they went, covered with a smidge of loose rapid rooter over the hole and into the tent they went.

Since my tent temp and RH is still fluctuating, i made sure to put the heating mat under the tray and added the humidity dome, but left the vent about 25/30% open.

Now inside the tray is about 83 degrees (F) and about 80% RH. (Not too hot I hope!)

Im not counting those chickens yet, but we’ll see what the morning brings!
I was wondering where the Sour Livers were! I just breezed through the whole journal this morning. I have 5 Mephisto plants going now in coco. Sour Livers is on my list to score… I hope it lives up to it’s slogan Dude! You smell!
