Autos v. Photos - A 5x5 No Rules Fight for Yield: A Jon & NickHardy Gig

Plants handle all kinds of nute brands with different ratios and most do fine and contain enough Ca and Mg
Any bottled nutes are mixed up per L of water [or equivalent] so 1ml/L is 1:1000
I don't think the difference between N 0.004% and N 0.001%is crucial, that's all I'm sayin'
Ah! And duh. Of course that’s what you meant, sorry. It actually was clear the first time, lol. Well, now that I understand, all I can offer is my own experience. I’ve run Fox Farms full set, Prescription Blend, Blue Planet, Remo, Canna for coco, and now Cyco. Too early to call anything on the Cyco. But in every other case, using their system as prescribed by the chart, I had plants crying before the end. Once I realized what was required (imo) and began doing it as I do or some variation, I never have deficiencies of any significance. My conclusion to use your way of presenting the math would be that the difference is in fact significant. But like most everything, I could easily be wrong. Maybe it’s something else. But I go with what works. Fwiw!!

I'll add TPS calmag to the list of 0-0-0 versions. Available on Amazon here in the States.

Coco retains rather than leaches calcium and magnesium. That's why coco growers add more.
Thanks! And thanks for the correction on my verb of choice, lol. I meant the same thing but yes, it’s the wrong word to use.

I'm not aware of any hydro growers using calmag to regulate their pH, but if those folks are out there then indeed there is nothing in 0-0-0 that will have any effect on the pH of the solution.
I use ph up and down to regulate mine. I hope that’s correct. Seems to work well.

Skywalker Backup Plant

The melding has begun!

Melding. Lol.

I've been using Canna for yonks, ok results and never had any probs, but...
Seeing what some folks like you here at 420 Mag are achieving has made me think again
Realized I could do better so I invested £500 [worth a couple of Z here] in a pro light and some f'ing expensive *yikes* nutes [no Phosphoric Acid or CaMg required, AN]
This is my first run with this regime and so far; it's like new boots and panties, part exchanging a Citroen C3 for an Audi TT
Maybe those numbers are significant after all

Blue Dream/Northern Lights, anyone?

“Vauxhall Nova, driving like a joyrider”

😂

That's how most successful hydro growers do it, so I'd say it's correct!
I haven’t hardly had to use it this time, but one thing I wonder is, if for whatever reason your reservoir is fluctuating a lot and requires daily adjustments or thereabouts, is there a point where you can overuse the ph up and down?

Some hydro folks adjust their res pH daily so there's that. Also, a number of factors will cause pH to change in a solution like aeration and nutrient uptake by the plant.

Mine gets adjusted daily sometimes if its low I will just add my tank rain water thats at 6.3pH rather than add pH up and adjust ppm to suit.
I've often wondered like Jon if the constant use of the buffers has a negative effect on the plants even though you are keeping nutrients within desired pH range

If I was doing DWC I’d get either the Bluelab ($600) or Chinese knock off ($300-500) Auto Ph device. They only go one way. Like Absorber our (borehole) water is 6.3 so I’d put the pipe into a bottle of Ph Down, sensor in the res and drips in as required to hit your target Ph of say 5.8.

That they are manufactured/sold by a company like Bluelab which is for large scale farms both hydro and not suggests its fine as long as you’re changing your res out as scheduled.

To lower if you wanted to have an organic flavour to your dwc then driftwood or peat pellets will lower your Ph - maybe that’s what people use with aquaponics fish symbiosis type grow?

The thing that worries me about those is this ,I have a 100ltr reservoir 80ltrs of nutrients when its watering plants ( flood and drain via bell syphon) it empties 40 ish litres from reservoir so my concerns are how is an automatic doser going to be accurate with so much movement of the water and what if it adds buffer and that buffer is pumped to plants before mixing 😳. The pump doesn't stop in my set up .

I think the fancier ones can do some dosing based on flow rates. They are generally used for fixed reservoirs like I use though.

But it would probably average out anyway. I can’t see that you’ll suddenly get a hot spot of 6.3 and certainly not less than 5.8 because the water returns at 5.8 it won’t dose?

Hey @Roy Growin - when I started I bought two “1000 watt” Maxsisun blurples for next to nothing. Actual wattage draw was like 256 or something, lol, but two of them in my first 5x5 with no 420 in my life yet did okay 👌 on my very first grow. I used only Fox Farms Tiger Bloom, no other nutes, in soil. So I also began on the cheap. But it only took one grow to realize that I needed a way better light and a real nutrient package (or at least a complete one). Just as you seem to have realized. And yeah, it’s funny you say that, cuz it really is like Christmas Day every day the first run with all the new stuff. Lmao, I can totally relate. I guess you get what you pay for applies to growing infrastructure too in some aspects.
