Ase's Multi-Strain Quadlining In Coco

Hope you had a good trip Ase. Looking forward to seeing how things look when you emerge from the jungle in your tents.
Headed home today, can’t wait to see what they look like! Hopefully I can get an update in soon but straight to a few long days of work right when I get back. I’ll try and at least get a couple of quick shots up. Just praying they are as healthy as I left them.

I’m sure they are doing great and it will be a jungle on your return haha

A Week Being Left Alone

Just in case I am not able to get to a real update tomorrow, here is what things looked like when I got back. When I opened the tents both of them felt like I was in a jungle so you guys may have been accurate with the jungle comments. Overall pretty happy. Glad to be back home and my separation anxiety wasn't bad at all ;). I remember when I took a vacation when I first started growing and man it was bad...lol!

The monster just keeps getting bigger and now has filled in. Over the next couple days I will really tie her down one more time and do a large defoliation. Flip day is coming this week most likely. She needed a ton of water and was looking a little droopy but she sure did fill in quick. For the most part she stayed pretty even.

The sisters all were in really good shape. They did keep stretching though (you can see in the week ago pictures how far they were up to the fan and where they ended on the current one) but luckily I set the lights a bit higher before I left. My after stretch defoliation and branch removal (of the ones that aren't going to cut it) needs to happen ASAP so I'll hopefully get to that tomorrow. They are showing hairs all over and will need a strong P-K boost on the next feed but are right on track. Air flow isn't great in the tent right now and I probably need to install a canopy fan but we will see after I get done chopping.

Oh la la ! Them girls grew mighty fine while you were away! Some healthy looking plants that need some TLC and a good haircut haha!

I flipped my critical quads yesterday so t
Let the flowering begin!!

I just started this and enjoyed the result. It's nice for me when I get a big juicy clone like those.
They definitely make the perfect clones. I wish I had a ton of space to clone and also breed but until then, I’ll just keep with my two tents.

I’m pretty behind on everyone’s journals now but can’t wait to get a little time to sit down and catch up!

After Stretch Defoliation

As most of you know, my last big defoliation for quadline comes after the plants have stopped stretching and started putting out a good chunk of white hairs. This is usually 2 and a half to 3 weeks after flipping to 12/12. Since I don't really touch them during stretch there has been a lot of vegetative growth and air flow is really limited. Also the light can't get down to the bottom half of the plants usually so I like to strip the plants of most of the big fan leaves and then take any lower branches off that seem weak or are still not going to get any light. This part can be really scary because I take a lot of plant material off at this point and basically lollipop all of my main colas. Also it seems weird to people to be cutting off any branches but in my experience they don't produce anything worth keeping and the flimsy branches will just fall over when the bud starts to pack on weight. When I started defoliating I couldn't feel any air getting to me through the plants and when I ended I could feel the waves of air moving through the tent. As the buds start to form and take shape the lack of airflow can cause mold issues and ruin an entire grow so I'd rather cull the plants down to a point where the airflow is still good rather then deal with potential mold issues that sometimes just can't be reversed. Majority of your yield will come off the thick main branches anyways so I try to do everything to support those branches and get rid of a lot of the small off shoots.

Before. All of these pics were taken last night but I just didn't have time to get an update in.

After. You can see that the bottom third of most of the plants have been removed and a chunk of the off shoots are now gone.

The main girl took a ton of water and now looks really droopy. I will get in there in the next day or two to do a major defoliation and then once she looks ready again it will be time to flip. I was thinking of just flipping it but I want to tie down the 4 main branches one last time and do a defoliation so the middle stuff gets a bit more even with the rest. I think I am going to have to do a ton of supercropping during stretch with this girl as she is getting too strong for the ties.

Hey Ase! Hope you thoroughly enjoyed your vacation!

After reading through this post, we definitely do things a little differently! I'll try and list as many things as I can remember lol.

1. I think we top at different nodes. I believe you stated that you leave the 3rd and 4th nodes on. I leave the 2nd and 3rd nodes on. Looking back at a pic someone posted on here about which ones to cut, it almost looks like the first node is completely in line with the cotyledons. Is that normal with photoperiods? I have only ever grown autos, and there's normally a noticeable vertical space between the coytledons and the first node. Anyway, we both seem to be getting great results, so maybe it doesn't matter so much. For my next grow, I might try 2 of the same strain and keep the 2nd and 3rd on one, and the 3rd and 4th on the other.

2. You take branches off, like the undernode that you referred to. I barely take anything off, mainly because I'm just afraid I'll hurt my yield. Once I'm in full on flower, I always regret not taking lower stuff off, so this is something I would like to start trying. As for the undernode, instead of taking it off, I just gently bend and twist the top part of the branch where the undernode resides, and I'll stake it down when I'm happy with how it looks. Instead of having an undernode, I come out having 2 side branches. When my girls get ready for training, I will post some pics here to show you what I'm talking about if its difficult to visualize what I'm talking about (I tend to ramble sometimes lol).

3. This one isn't really about training, but I think it's important to state this difference. You grow photos, and I grow autos. I only bring this up to show other people who are reading this that it can be done with autos too! And it works very well if I might add lol.

Like you, I also do defoliation to allow light to lower parts of the plant more light, and to keep airflow going. I haven't had mold issues yet, and I would like to keep it that way!

Thank you for welcoming me to this forum. Going back to our previous discussions, it is true that I hadn't been on this site at all and just decided to leave an extra node on one of my plants to see what would happen. Again, I find it awesome that you have started this technique and have been showing this community in detail the steps you do for the quadline technique.

The other forum I'm on is definitely starting to take notice of my (well, yours. You tried it first lol) technique. On one thread we are having an auto showdown, just a bunch of us growing autos and showing each other different techniques. One guy is fluxing his auto and it's looking really good. I'll stick with the quadline though. It's given me great results so far.

Here's a pic of my first plant that I quadlined. It was Alien v Triangle by mephisto.

Have a great day Ase!

Thanks for taking time to explain again your actions with details. You re so right!

Tangie is gonna be so Huge I can't wait to see the size of stretch its gonna have. I'm sure you'll be swinging one those branches during updates. That's a nice Lollipopping on the flowering girls. They are the Quadline example for my plants :welldone:

@MCubed476 Jesus that is a freaking solid truck on that Auto. I can Imagine you winning almost any race against a Flux Autogrow with a tree like that:bravo:

Interesting stuff. You are right on almost everything but I have indeed done this on Autos as well. I prefer to grow photoperiod plants so I can have full control but one of my other journals has my run of Autos. I will likely do a grow shortly with Autos again because I have accumulated a good chunk of seeds and will need to use them at some point. I also used to use your twisting method but it was too much work and just started removing the undernode(s). Didn't seem to have any effect so I never went back.

I agree with VanStank that I don't think the node thing matters a tremendous amount as a healthy plant can recover quickly but usually the size I like the plants to be is about when they grow out the 5th node so you can top it off and be left with 3 and 4. Also typically the 1st node does have separation between cotyledons with photos so maybe the person had already plucked them off?

Anyways here is a picture of my Auto Cherry Bomb girl that was quadlined.

I truly have no idea what to expect when I flip it. All I know is the time is near and then I will find out! I've never tried this before so things could really get crazy.
