Another Tabletop Crop: Carmen's Spring Grow With Vipar Spectra XS 1500 Pro

Do you have examples?
Over topping and over training can keep them short. Not raising the light at flip will inhibit stretch. At flip imo they should be getting 50-60% of the light they were getting in veg.
Oh wow, ok.
Meaning that if you have your light 12” away in veg at flip you should raise it to 24 and maintain that distance throughout stretch. Make them chase it. If there is a dominant leader either bend it down below the lower ones or pinch it off.
Thank you.

This is a plant I have literally just harvested. I topped node four side branches. I do not usually do that. It was an experiment that I am not in a rush to repeat. I topped at the 6th node on this plant. I usually top at 4th. I've topped the new ones at 4th.

I've been keeping the light at 11 inches from the plant throughout growth. The plants have shown sex but are not in flower yet. I'm still learning autos myself, so I am not sure when to raise the lights to 24 inches. Perhaps one of the auto growers may be able to tell me if I should raise the light now or later. I'm growing with @ViparSpectra XS 1500 Pro lights.

Further to my last post, I have now raised the light intensity to 75 % again (I dropped it back down because I thought I saw some leaf stress), and raised the lights to 20 Inches / 52 cm height. The one plant is reaching up for the light most beautifully and the other not so much, it's never done the praying, from birth. I hope that the lights are beckoning them to stretch :)

Hi Carmen,

Gelato looks gorgeous! I hear it's a great strain. You did a great job with her. Happy Smokin'

Thank you Bode. I'm about to dip into my first Gelato harvest from 5th Sept. I would usually cure longer but I am at the bottoms of jars. I'll let you know what I think. It does have a kind of Tiramisu smell mixed with some fruitiness like apricot.

RR1 is gaining height and still no sign of flower.

RR2 is a bit floppy compared with the erect RR1, and it is showing preflower.

This soil is working out better huh?
Thanks for noticing :) Yes! My thoughts today exactly. When I am used to things and settled into a perpetual routine I'm going to try the spikes you and Gee suggested. I swear I am watching the one plant grow as I sit here and work. I'm waiting for those top branches to be long enough to train out. I've already added some pipe cleaner bits to the node 3 branches, to keep them lower while node 2 catch up.

Wow Carmen!😍 These gals are off to a great start! They look really happy and healthy. This should be a beauty of a run. Who don't love a good RR! Are they stinky yet?
I caught a faint whiff this morning actually. They get very whiffy as I remember. Thanks, yes I am feeling more relaxed with the new soil and confident things will remain that way :)

Good afternoon @Carmen Ray

I hope you are having a pleasant day.
Your girls look like they are coming along nicely.

Be safe, and grow well my friend,
Tok..
Thank you Tok :) I hope your day is grand. Sun is shining here and it feels a bit like spring. Be safe too.

I don’t know anything about autos really. Never grown one. The light adjustments I mentioned earlier are what works for me growing photo period plants.
I get that, thank you. My sense tells me that the same should apply for autos too. I'm willing to go with that logic and watch.

It should hold true. I kind of think the autos flower based on tap root but could be way off. Seen some folks grow massive Auto plants in dwc under 20/4 light schedule.
Genetics are going to determine some of the growth habit for sure.
If you start with the light up close and high intensity the node spacing will stack right up. If you start to open the distance/lower intensity they will open up.
I guess it depends on what you are looking for as a final product plant wise. I typically top at the 6 node (I usually remove the first node at the cotyledons) and let the lower branches catch up. Then top all of the branches. My veg is typically about 6-8 weeks.

Nice topping and great upward growth! Good idea to keep an eye out for leaf stress at 1000ppfd too. :thumb:

That would be one way to match up with this chart if you're measuring:

Though I'd worry that that might be too much of a decrease in light without actually knowing the numbers, since the chart doesn't indicate as much as a 50-60% decrease in stretch.

Thank you. It's going to be interesting to see if it helps me to have the light at a greater distance. I'm not after nodal spacing as much as I am after the actual flowers lengthening and getting taller than they usually do. These plants are XXL, so they should be genetically charged to grow bigger than usual. They are under a 24/0 light schedule to make up for any loss of light due to power outages.

I'm not sure what you mean about flowering based on tap root. Do you mean size of plant is affected by the root growth? I grow substantial roots so I don't think that is my problem. This plant another I just harvested. It's short and stubby compared with the plant grown by @LKABudMan here.

Thanks! :)

Yes. DLI is what should be a baseline

PPFD is now back down to about 500 to 600. I don't know how to measure the DLI, which is made more complicated by power outages I would think? What do you think?
