Another Tabletop Crop: Carmen's Spring Grow With Vipar Spectra XS 1500 Pro

It used to be time Carmen. Wait for a real auto growers answer though. Day 26 seems typical.
Thanks Otter.
Sorry I'm late. I didn't realize you had started a new journal. Your plants look great!
Thank you HG.
I believe @Justin Goody and @BooWho2 both top when there are signs of flowering.
I have been topping mine when they show sex but they are usually a bit bigger than this. I don't want to make a mistake and top too early. I also don't want to leave it too late.

I have found that my plants are not stretching much and I want to change that.

Hopefully these close up pics will help a bit.

Sometimes it does seem early to top them at first sight of pistils, though I think it can help them stretch for a few days before going into full blown flower.
In general I top it and the next day cut the lowest few branches and this tiny stress seems to help more than hurt. Admittedly some strains are just built different and it may not have that same effect on every plant- autos can be fussy 😆

Thank you, I'll top them tomorrow then. I up-potted them today in anticipation.

I don't consider showing sex the same as going into flower at all, but I don't know if auto growers mean they top when the plant is showing sex when they say they top when it goes into flower.
I have the same question but from what I understand Justin to be saying, now is the right time, when the plant is showing sex? Lol, still not 100 % sure.

Two days ago the plants both showed sex, ie they displayed a couple of tiny pistils at node 4. Yesterday I up-potted the Red Russians and today I topped them and removed the first node branches. You'll see that there is a weak branch at node 3 on RR1. I may end up removing that too. We'll see what happens with it.

I have turned up the lights to 75% and the ppfd is now at approximately 1000. It may be too high and I may have to turn it down a bit. I will monitor the reaction.

The plants are getting taller and branching out nicely now. They look like dagga plants not seedlings

Thank you for your presence and I wish you a week of fabulosity.

I don't know about autos but if that was a baby photo I would say you nailed it!❤️👊

I just did a bunch of reading on adding IR light. IR light makes the plant feel the warmth of light but it can't see it so it thinks its in the shade and stretches up. Maybe this will help?
That's interesting. Thanks Gee. I'll look into that.

Pretty sure @Slapalottapuss is familiar in this realm....
I know he's got a few additional light bars in his grows.

Yes. I have been experimenting with a lot of wavelengths that are not visible to the human eye but I have Zero “0” auto experience.
Hi Slapalottapuss, what have you learnt from your experiments?

That being said stretch should not be looked at in a negative way. It allows a better expression of the plant.
I am finding that my plants are smaller than some I have seen and I feel that they do not stretch as much as they could. I am trying to find ways to encourage stretch but I have no way of adding supplemental lighting, so it's academic at this point.

Do you have examples?
Over topping and over training can keep them short. Not raising the light at flip will inhibit stretch. At flip imo they should be getting 50-60% of the light they were getting in veg. Meaning that if you have your light 12” away in veg at flip you should raise it to 24 and maintain that distance throughout stretch. Make them chase it. If there is a dominant leader either bend it down below the lower ones or pinch it off.
