Update: CBD Time in the New Veg Box!
It was inspired by Dutchman’s (
featured here) but is a little smaller in area, a little taller in height (I think) and made to sit
on the desktop, not under it. Everything is at the perfect height for working and it means no more bending down to manage small plants - my body is happy about that!
Up and running! Internal dimensions wall to wall are 600mm x 420mm x 1000mm
My buddy came back and put the cladding on (Ecoply 9mm - low formaldehyde
) and made some holes where I needed them. The lovely other painted it for me with Porter’s paints (low VOC) ceiling white on the inside (with anti-mould/moisture resistant agent added) and a beautiful matte black on the outside (except the back and the top - labour saving!).
I spent some time with it outside to fix the extraction fan, a chunky computer fan, and it’s wiring.
From inside you can see how perfectly it fits in between the box’s structure. That was totally a happy accident!
I’d planned to mount it on top with a circular hole under it, but it turned out to wedge perfectly between the timbers - it’s ‘tapped’ into place with a rubber mallet
Serendipitous!
I scrounged through the little tins of bits and pieces of fittings and fixings (the ones you collect over time) and put together a little cable loop for the top corner.
I haven’t fashioned the door properly yet - it is going to be made from a layered corflute sandwich that keeps the white on the inside and black on the outside. Currently I’m using stick-on Velcro to fix it temporarily in place and I may keep that system as it seems to work well - but ideally I want to do it with magnets
It’s super lightweight and completely minimises the physical impact.
Here’s how it looks when closed at the moment with only one piece of corflute - not a grow box but a
glow box!
I mounted the powerboard to the side and can fit all the plugs I need there (that’s the flowering tent on the left).
When I reconfigure the tent (very soon) I am going to bring down the T4 extraction fan and place it in this gap (on a plinth) so it blows into the air intake at the bottom of the box, in the hopes that it will give me a little temperature rise in there.
Speaking of
in there, I still have to fashion something less makeshift to isolate clones and cuttings from the light and make a few other tweaks here ‘n’ there but essentially it’s working great!
That side lighting reflection effect is certainly bringing the side shoots on
CBD#1 - which Ace say is not a big brancher (has a strong columnar shape). This is especially good right now as I should have been transplanting and flipping it to flower a few days ago.
The plan has always been to leave it untopped and flower in a small pot (14L) - it was only meant to veg for 4 weeks so it’s going to be a bit bigger than planned.
9 blades - and I think there is an 11 bladed now but they’re so smoooshed it‘s hard to tell!
Oh - and that was
Candida CD-1 (#3 for me) up there next to her CBD stablemate. At about 2weeks I think.
And over to one side - the clone zone!
ANd the functional Sour Bubba clones - almost fully fledged now. They were a little thirsty here,,,
Here’s the remainIng Sour Bubba cuts (slips) - one showing roots in some pretty funky water!
And the other sprouting roots above the waterline - once i noticed this happening, i started shaking the bottle every now and then and only ever topped up the water to just below them...
So I have had success with clones without really trying and with 3 different methods all at once - clearly that’s the ticket!
No plan!
Going forward and once I build the larger veg space that is planned, this box will likely become a dedicated clones or mother’s box.
In the meantime I am stoked with It and will make very good use of it for short veg periods and all kinds of propagation.
I have a mini tower fan, and a mini humidifier that are working perfecly (except the humi doesnt come back on after power loss so can;t be put on a timer -small prob!). The mini tower fan is in front of the lower hole where the cables go out. Environmentals are ok - and will be great if I can get a couple more degrees of heat.
Seperate veg and flower spaces really change the ways you can think about growing - it seems more relaxing already!
Also relaxing are my regular kangaroo companions - the bunch of mums are around a lot and all of them have wriggling bundles of various sizes in their pouches. We might get lucky and see some babies soon! Meanwhile they rest... and they eat... and they scratch...
I am still at a pretty low ebb energy-wise. Lots of things happen in my head and I have all sorts of things to say in other journals etc but very little energy to get any of it out! Needless to say - I’m enjoying it all as much as usual, just needing more masses of rest than usual... which is saying something!
I hope you are all as rested as you can be and staying safe and well medicated where needed!
