AIO vs DIY Monotub: Purple Mystic Takes On Blue Meanie Cubes

Both the grain bags are from MushroomSupplies.com, @Tokin Roll. They use Millet, hardwood sawdust and probably some gypsum and lime. They call their blend "lightning-tek". I am going to run a couple MGK 5-grain bags next time.

It will be interesting to compare colonization times.
They definitely DO like wood/sawdust. I used an oat/sawdust mix in jars and they slammed on it really quickly once it started. This one might be a stunner for ya! Happy Friday!! 😎✌️

@Scottay I was thinking about @Tokin Roll and @Lady Cannafan attempts with Panaeolus Cyanescens. They both reported very slow mycelial growth in their grain jars.

The mycelium in the Purple Mystic-X grain bag is very close to the contaminant now and hasn't slowed. The entire bottom of the bag is covered and the mycelium is creeping up the backside as well.

Looks encouraging! :cheer:
This morning it pretty much made contact but now there's so much condensation on the inside of bag it will be difficult to get a detailed view even with a loupe. The Mongrel Horde definitely looks dead and the remains have even sloughed off of the grain to a high degree. I think the shrooms are going to keep on expanding non-stop through the remains. If so, Becca's gonna be shaking and mixing another grain bag (in which case I'll need more substrate soon).

I also measured the temperature with an Extech IR200 Infrared Thermometer and the colonized area was 82.1F while the uncolonized grain is 79.9F, a difference of 2.1 degrees.

Mycelium is warm and alive with growth, and the invaders are dead cold. LOL
This experiment is going great!

Will you be doing a shake and break on the test bag (X) once the mycelium gets hard in there?
I'll do that as soon as I see how the mycelium reacts to the remains of the Mongrel Horde. The sooner the better!

Time for an update regarding the Purple Mystic AIO and the Blue Meanie Cubes Grain.

Both are doing well. There was a large area right rear of the PM AIO that didn't mix well, so I re-mixed the bag to get better distribution of mycelium throughout the medium. Also moved the bag to a 16 Qt tub so I could kind of spread it out more to make more surface area. Now it's just a waiting game, and when pins show I'll open the bag to start doing free air exchanges in a few weeks.

The BMC grain is filling the grain bag nicely and looks like it will be ready to implant in substrate in a week or so. I have a 5Lb bag of substrate enriched with composted manure ready to go.

I also ordered 4 more Sterilite 1644 totes to use as monotubs and they arrived today... except they aren't Sterilite 1644s. These crackheads thought it was ok to send me Target 2154s instead. They are the same capacity but the shape is different. Wanted the Sterilite cause I already have 2 and want all the same so they stack... and now gonna have to go get some 1.25" ID hose from Home Depot to make monotub clamps. I don't think I have time to send them back and get the 1644s, as the mycelium won't wait. These will have to do. F'in crackheads...

I decided to remix both the AIO and the BMC grain bag as there were large areas in each that weren't colonizing. The AIO got remixed last night and today I remixed the BMC. The result should be a slightly delayed but larger harvest. Despite the remixes, both AIO and BMC grain are transpiring profusely, indicating lots of activity.
Continuing the watch of the Purple Mystic-X-periment. The Cubensis mycelium is now growing into the contaminated grain. No visible effect.

The Cubensis mycelium has entered the Horde Wastelands, apparently undeterred (so far). Soon it will get to an area with a lot of Horde remains so if it's toxic to the Cubensis at all I'll soon know.

I have a tremendous urge to mix the bag... kinda like that edward scissorhands feeling you get when your buds are just about ripe.

PurpleMystic-X20240930_213458r.jpg

24 hours after re-mix, I can see little white spots everywhere in both the Purple Mystic AIO and the Blue Meanie grain, just not dense enough to photograph yet so no pics today.

The mycelium in the PM-X bag is raging along but if you look around 11:00 from the SHIP, you see some indentations that could be interpreted as inhibited growth so watching it closely.
The PM AIO and BMC Grain are recolonizing nicely and look well mixed now.

I'll say this about pan cyan. I think cubes are more forgiving. Pan Cyan is a different animal altogether sorta (potency wise) Spores are inherently dirty. That being said the best approach to cyan is to put it to agar first. Now... I use 100mm plates. If there's contamination it'll be exposed immediately. If I see this then I transfer it to another plate. Now.... If you drop that whole fuzzy agar puck into a quart jar it will absolutely eat up the grain!! I promise you that the extra effort is well worth the fruit as 1-1.5 gram is one serious trip. Blows every cubensis away for me. I love cubies but the pan cyan is a monster. If you put in the extra love she'll love you back. Holy shit I close my eyes and can almost see the colors right now!!! 🤣 I saw colors that I've never ever seen before!!!! 💯😂 The best cup of tea I ever drank!!!
Back to the syringe.... If you use LC to grain it'll work great. Not so much (for me personally) for a regular spore syringe. But a spore syringe 💉 to agar works fine. Just a drop or two to the plate. 😊 I hope this helps y'all. I'm no expert by far but this community has helped me so much and I've gathered so much information and met so many nice people I'm trying to pay it forward. Just had that conversation with a seed fairy recently. Happy Wednesday. 😎✌️

Love my little handheld scope. Great for mycology and checkin trichomes!!! These are older but viable prints. As you can see on the bigger print you can see smudge marks!! 😂

e two very heavy hitters prints. One is Nec D and the other one is Pan Bisbo.

My phone glitched halfway through the post. Sorry it seems disjointed. Technology is love/hate.

I have one of those Carson pocket microscopes, @Scottay. Very handy too. I get a lot of use out of my Optivisor and USB Microscope too. My Bausch & Lomb 5x Loupe gets used all the time as well.

I haven't tried Pans yet, but I have had Liberty Caps. Like Pan Cyan, they are hella potent. To this day, though, no one has succeeded in cultivating them as far as I know. I would like to try growing Pan Cyans at some point. Right now I have my hands full though!

The Purple Mystic AIO looks likes it's going to be pinning soon, and the BMC grain has pretty much colonized the whole grain bag and is ready to go into substrate very soon.

The PM-Xperiment continues to entertain and inform. The mycelium does appear to be inhibited some but going to have to watch some more with a magnifier.

I love the lib caps. I had a print 2 years ago and gave it to a friend. He followed someone's tek and actually got them to grow. All I got was contamination. They definitely are a potent shrooms. Imo nothing beats Pans. It's so clean and clear and the euphoria.
Happy Thursday to you!! 😎✌️✨

Wow, @Scottay I'm surprised anyone got lib caps to grow. They must be a very talented mycologist! Last time I ate them we found them in a field near Seattle.

Today, the mycelium has pretty much completely colonized the All-In-One bag. Notched the top left corner of the bag and used the Shroomidifier to inflate it, then sealed it with a binder clip. It will be easier to see what's going on now. Saturday I'll notch the top right corner and start doing FAEs. Crappy picture but the best I can do shooting through the bag.

The Blue Meanie Cubes is just about fully colonized as well. Saturday looks good for mixing the BMC grain with substrate in a 16Qt tub.

In the PM-X-periment, the mycelium was running away, spreading fast and more than 50% colonized so I decided to mix it. Also ordered another 5 pounds of substrate so I can "plant" the mycelium after it has recolonized the grain bag.

The Purple Mystic AIO is at the "any day now" stage. Hard to see through the bag, so until the shrooms reach a discernable size, it's a tough call on when to begin FAE. Personally I think sooner is better so I think tomorrow I'll make the second notch at top-right and start FAE. I've installed duct tape tabs on the front and back of the bag so I can make like an accordian to billow air in and out.

PurpleMysticAIO20241004_154209r.jpg

The Blue Meanie Cubes grain is fully colonized now and just getting denser, so I think tomorrow will be a good time to mix the grain with the substrate. I'm using the compost+CVG type of substrate for additional nutrients, so the grain needs to be thoroughly mixed to get the maximum number of inoculation points in the dung-bearing substrate. Literature says casing layer is optional so not going to bother.

The Purple Mystic- X-periment is recolonizing at an amazing rate! There was a lot of mycelium and I mixed it until my arms got sore, so it looks like the effort paid off. 5 days until the substrate arrives- the grain will be a solid block by then!
