AIO vs DIY Monotub: Purple Mystic Takes On Blue Meanie Cubes

Checked both grain bags tonight, no surprize that nothing's visible yet. Purple Mystic AIO looks go for mixing tomorrow evening, 17 days since inoculation.

AIO is doing it's rhyzo thing, going to wait another day to smash-n-mix. Instructions recommend mix at 10% to 20% colonization so a little ways to go yet. No action in either of the grain bags yet.

Just now spotted white mycelium in both the BMC and the PM-X grain bags. It will be fascinating to see what happens when the Cubensis mycelium reaches the grain in the X bag that was contaminated.

I am anxiously awaiting that too.
I've read that as mycelium gets thicker and spread out more that it gets more resistant to contaminants. Do you think that's true?

Absolutely true, LC. In fact they have antibodies and fight germs just like mammals do. I believe jt starts developing self defense as soon as the mycelium becomes dikaryotic. Like us, though, there are limits.

Purple Mystic AIO is doing well, add one more day till mix. BMC grain bag has taken off and is going nuts. The Purple Mystic-X grain bag is starting to take though the grain looks dry to me, maybe from steaming it.

Three weeks since inoculating the AIO and today is mix and shake day! Here are the before and after photos, and updated grain bag pics.

Oh, my... Eight days since inoculating the Blue Meanie grain and it's time to mix it already. The mycelium is growing at an amazing rate. The addition of their "Lightning-tek" hardwood sawdust seems to definitely sped up growth. It will probably be ready for substrate in a week! Here's today's before & after mixing pics.

After mixing.

This morning I noted little white spots all over the BMC grain bag except for the right side, so I gently re-mixed to distribute the broken up mycelium more evenly. I can see little white bits everywhere now.
Within a few days the whole bag will turn white with mycelium.

I weighed each of the grain bags. I wanted to find out if steam pasteurizing the contaminated X bag dried the grain below field capacity. The X bag weighed in at 1299 grams (45.9 oz). Surprisingly, the BMC bag was lighter by a few grams at 1295 g (45.76 oz), so the X bag doesn't appear to have lost moisture from being steamed for 2.7 hours.

The Mystical Mycelium just above the left side of the SHIP is about a 1/2" from grain that was exposed to the Mongrel Horde so we'll soon know if it's hostile territory. Normally, after about a week with liquid culture, I would mix the bag, but this time I'll wait so I can see how first contact goes. 🍄 :lot-o-toke:

Hi @Tokin Roll

Thanks- the cultures are doing well aren't they? Yours are kicking a## too!

The Purple Mystic mycelium in my X bag is like 3/8" from some contaminant effected grain and will contact it soon, so I'm all over that like a soap opera, lol! 📺:nerd-with-glasses:🍄

I figure there are several possible results; worst case is the infected grain is still living, highly toxic in some manner and destroys the whole cubensis colony. Best case is the cubensis just munches it's way right through the contaminated, re-sterilized grain as if everything were normal.

Made a pic to illustrate the front lines of the (maybe) epic battle between the Purple Mystic Nation and the (possibly pre-decimated) Mongrel Horde:

Here's a photo of the back of the X bag showing the extent of the contaminant in the grain. It all appears dead and hasn't progressed since I cooked it's goose. The Purple Mystic mycelium has covered a good bit of the bottom of the bag (60-70%) where the grain was normal but can't be seen from this perspective.

More photos for a Monday afternoon.

Inoculated Friday, September 13 with liquid culture and mixed Saturday, September 21, the Blue Meanie Cubes are shroomin' right along with white spots of mycelium everywhere.

There's a huge amount of condensation forming all over the inside of the Purple Mystic All-In-One bag. Inoculated Friday, August 30 and mixed Friday, September 20, there isn't much visible mycelium yet except for the top surface.

POPCORN!!!! It looks like it, doesn't it? This won't need butter or salt, though! This is day 12 for the Blue Meanie Grain, day 26 for the Purple Mystic AIO and day 10 for the Purple Mystic-X-periment. The mycelium in the Purple Mystic-X-periment still hasn't reached the contaminated area. Maybe tomorrow?

Both the grain bags are from MushroomSupplies.com, @Tokin Roll. They use Millet, hardwood sawdust and probably some gypsum and lime. They call their blend "lightning-tek". I am going to run a couple MGK 5-grain bags next time.

It will be interesting to compare colonization times.

This evening in the X-periment bag, the Cubensis mycelium still hasn't reached the contaminated grain, but it's within an 1/8" so it won't be long. Lots of rhizomorphic growth now.
