42 Year Old Bag Seed!

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Was just reading this and my wife started taking a piece. Was seriously thinking of saying in a few minutes Hun.... but thought better of it. Nice story behind the seeds and glad they sprouted to the fine plants they are today. Thanks for serving and good job brodda!!! :nicethread:

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

I just wanted to say that this is probably the coolest and most interesting journal I've ever stumbled onto. Can't wait to see how it turns out. If I had an extra grow light, I'd donate it to you in the name of seeing these plants full potential. It would be really interesting to see how such old school genetics could perform, given how far the grow technology has come in 42 years. Or maybe all of this grow technology is actually just hype and we've all been bamboozled. Anyway, I'm very curious to see how they look compared to the plants of today. Thanks for keeping up with this journal.

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Hey, Welcome to the grow!!! Sit back and enjoy the fun.

Well, its coming up on 2 months of growing and in ways this is going slowly but am super impressed with how they are growning.

Latte, Thanks for the offer but I am used to growing with CFLs and would like to continue using them with this grow so I can compare. I still have some of the original seeds left and after this grow I'll do it using MH and other grow lights. I would also like to try growing them outdoors(my perferred method) As for the technology, The plants just do what they do, so the technology is in the ability to grow them differently(indoors, larger yields).

Lookiing at Ozzie, this plant would be perfect for a scrog. It just keeps getting longer branches and popping bud sites. I have got it LSTed like crazy so as not to take over the box. The trunk is getting huge on this thing. It is now about 3/4" around and getting thicker. Might need a chainsaw at harvest.

Harriet and runt are growing so bushy! I was looking at the plants this morning and was thinking about taking out some of the larger fan leaves but then I smacked myself and knocked that thought right out of my head! I have started LSTing them a bit to get more light into the lower reaches.

I have replaced a couple of bulbs because I thought there wasn't enough light being produced and after checking I gained 7k lumiens. The bulbs I replaced were natural light and I had been using them for 3 grows so I guess they do lose intensity. I have a mixture of cool white and natural light bulbs in the cover that I have been using for veg. I will be replacing more of the natural to cool white for flowering this week.

I have also been checking out some LEDs. I have used LEDs in my other hobby so I am familiar with them. I am thinking about building a couple of LED clusters for one of my next grows. I still have a lot of research to do on them(LED size, wave lenght, best was to build).

I have really depleated my stock of cyprus leaves making all my teas so I have to make a swamp run in the next few days to restock.

Enough rattling on, heres a picture of the box as of this morning.

I got a couple of Pms asking for certain pictures so here goes.

Plant level. (didn't notice light was out till after processing the picture).

Lets get the pics out the way first then I have some questions.

They are getting bigger and bigger. :thumb:

Ok now the questions.

I have had the plants on 12/12 for about 2 weeks now and only Ozzie has shown its female but only in one spot, what I thought was more pistils showing was just more branch sprouts. The rest of the plant never gave an indication and neither have the others. They just keep getting bigger!!!!

Should I take the lights to 11/13?
I stopped feeding with Grow Big and have been feeding with Big Bloom. Is it a slow change over thing going on?

If they do start to go into flower, I am thinking I might need a whole grow room when they really start their stretch!

Are there other ways, other than light timing to induce flowering?

Any help would be apprieciated.

ok i'll see if i can help
they look heavy on the sativa side so in my experience sativas can stretch as much as 400% most just double 200% also it can take 3 even 4 weeks for significant sex material to show, im not sure what light cycle you use for veg i like glr* because sex shows much faster among other benifits, as far as reducing light it depends its not the amount of light that gets them flowering its the amount of total darkness they get 99% of all strains will flower with 12 solid hours of absolute uninterrupted darkness,do you have light leaks? are there led lights from power strips/fans etc going un checked? are they getting the exact same dark time every "night"?
i think planning on a larger space is a good idea they may get real big,42 yrs ago 90% of all cannabis was grown outside and grown big!! its in those genetics i know because i grow a strain that came from old seed stock at least 20 yrs old and its taken many grow cycles for it to finally start to adapt to indoor life, but still a big plant i always start 12/12 from seed
also many of those old strains the island/Mediterranean/tropical strains were mostly "hermie" by nature so thats a consideration, i would say your in uncharted Territory with these plants, beyond the basics i would not have any "ideas" about what to expect they are wild animals brought to captivity no telling what they may do! and thats the fun interesting part! you cant look at what most of us are growing and use it as a guide for what to expect,
i would go easy on nutes these plants dont have years of human manipulation in their history
altering their genetics to be tolerant of modern supercharged nutrients,if possible i would use organic nutes, more like what their parents fed on.
you have a very special and rare treasure! most of the breeders in the world myself included would give a nut to get our hands on! its up to you buddy make us proud!!(no pressure)
lol so yeah just expect the unexpected, if they dont flower in another 2 weeks i would cut back the light 30-60 min
ok thats my 2 cents
they look good i did notice 1 has slightly clawed/curled in leaves, could be genetics or ph or even humidity sometimes they do that to try to hold in moisture hows your ph in the runoff and wheres the rh sitting?
besides that she looks good nice n green:goodjob::thumb::high-five:

*glr is a light cycle for veg where you run 12/12 but put 1 hour of light in the middle of the dark period so 12 on 5.5 off 1 on 5.5 off
many growers incd myself find it to be a superior veg light cycle, and it saves a few bucks on the power bill, the plants grow faster imho and due to a build up of flower hormone they show sex and begin flowering much faster once you start the flower cycle

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

I think that if that seed is from se asia that it will flower at12/12, because it grows near the equator so I would either leave it on12/12 or try a diminishing light schedual as you said 11/13 just my opinion

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Looking good! I have had times it has taken 21 days to show sex. Just be sure they are getting 12hrs of complete darkness. This is so exciting! :goodjob:

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

I have had the best results using 10/14 with equatorial sativa strains. They will still bud plenty long enough to build nice buds but things will happen faster.

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Thanks all for the info!!!!

BID, Buck, Thanks for the info. You both brought out info that I should have picked up on while researching the strain. I guess being buzzed while reading and playing with the plants isn't advizeable!!! I have started the plants on that interrupted dark schedule and will see how it goes.

BID, The ph on these plants has stayed right at 6.2 - 6.8 from the time I planted the seed. Soil stablization is a big deal for me, learned from growing roses and lilies. The Phos , Cal, and Mag are maintained with my feeding additive tea and I use the Foxfarms products only to suppliment the tea and only at 1/4 strenght so as not to jump those nutes too high(I hate burnt plants, why harm what you are trying to grow? You wouldn't give your child HGH so why try with your plants?). I routinely send samples of my soil to my states Department of Agriculture to get it tested and they all (4 times so far) come back with the same results.

I am trying super hard to maintain the breed and do realize the rarity of these seeds. So far, myself, my Dr(who is also a botanist) and my brother have or are trying to grow this set of seeds. I am wanting a male so bad so as to get some seed/pollen.

As for the box. I learned on here and during my previous grows that the darkness factor is rather important in growiing MJ indoors. Most people don't realize the amount of light pollution that goes on in their own homes from outdoor lighting(street light), computer modules(Many use LEDs in red and green), televisions, smoke detectors, even power strips and other appliances will display light so I chaulked all wire holes, weather stripped the door, sealed the floor and ceiling and sealed all vent holes.

If anyone has been wondering what has happened to Mini Monster. It is growing like mad! I guess its brush with death really freaked it out and it just needed some sun to get it back on track. I will post some pictures of it this weekend.

excellent im so glad to hear your covering all your bases and realize what you have there, i tell you this my heart skips a beat everytime i tool at look them and think wow 42 yr old genetics,,,i want i want i want!!! its to bad we are not allowed to barter on here lol *wink* perhaps some day you can get the identified and shared with the world, maybe you have the next chemdog story, i know i would be itching to get them growing in as many different gardens as i could, its a true time machine, i told my mom about your treasure and she was reminising like crazy talking bout Colombian gold, and Thai stick, old school mexican papo oro ,*i have that bred into my trailor trash strain* she was like is he giving some seeds? will you grow me some? i had to tell her "no mom its not like that i dont know him in person" she was a little bummed lol anyway the grow it top of my list to follow !

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

8/5/12 Update

Took the plants out of the box yesterday and did some reLSTing to Ozzie. Normally I LST them around the outside of the pot but Ozzie just keeps on getting bigger so now I'm starting to cross the pot with some of the branches. One thing I'm amazed with is the lack of dead leaves from these plants. Normally I get a few every week or so but I have only had 5 leaves die off all 3 of these plants. They are so green and healthy. Also checked out the soil and added some dry banana peels for the worms(gotta keep em happy and munching).

I'm beginning to think that DIB was right in that these plants just aren't going to follow any pattern with flowering. It has been 3 weeks on 12/12 and no sign of flowering. I have them on a 12/5 1/2 / 1/ 5 1/2 dark light schedule. I'll probably keep them like this for a couple of weeks and see how they go.

The area I have my grow box in was starting to get rather fragrant so I put some cedar chips in there and now you don't smell the plants only the cedar. I had noticed a few no see'ems flying around too but they are gone with the cedar in there(old Grandmom recommendation for gnats).

As for Mini Monster, I have had it on the south facing windowsill and only watering it and it is all nice and happy and starting to get big. While checking it out and getting it ready to take pictures of it I brushed the stem and got a nose full of the sweetest citrus!!! Now the whole room smells of it.

Heres a couple of pics. One of the box the other of Mini Monster

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Ok, I'm confused. Do you have them on 12/12 or 12/5 1/2 / 1/ 5 1/2? If you have them on 12/5 1/2 / 1/ 5 1/2 they will not flower. They need 12 hours of complete uninterrupted darkness each night cycle to flower.
