42 Year Old Bag Seed!

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

I like it,I like it alot. glad to hear about your young ladies! when I use ff nutes Ifeed them everyother watering and I mix grow big and the big bloom together. but if its working for you then do what you do. kind of looks like the monster could have some nute burn. but I aint no expert. anyway:goodjob:

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Fish, I am super conscience about nutes and nute burn, so thats why I don't mix them. I have had more problems using nutes than any other thing with my grows. As for the Monster, I haven't used nutes on it because it was in shock from getting burnt when the light fell on it. It is growing, just super slow. I am thinking about putting it on the porch and letting it just get to it, if you know what I mean.

7/19/12 Update:

Just got done playing with the plants and am super impressed with the stalks on all of them except Monster(soon to be called mini-monster).

Ozzie and Harriet are growing 2 inches a day with Runt growing about an inch.

Looking at these plants its hard to believe they all came from the same bagseed so I am wondering if they came from the same area. Ozzie's leaves are long and sharp where Harriet's and Runts are very broad. Ozzie if I hadn't started LSTing would probably be 20" high easy. As it is he is spreading out all over the place with lots space between nodes.

I have also noticed a difference in smell. After playing with Ozzie, there is a distinct fruity smell on my hands where as while playing with Harriet or runt the room fills with flowery aroma. Even my Mom in law mentioned it has a gardenia smell to it.

As for nutes, I have cut back on the Foxfarms Biggrow and have increased the Foxfarms Big Bloom. I did a soil test 3 days ago and got back the results(I love the Dept of Agricultures response rate! they should all get raises) and it showed a higher Calcium reading than I like so I have cut back on the Calcium but increased the Magnesium a small bit(adding 1 teaspoon of Milk of Magnesia per 1 gallon in my tea). Other than mini monster the leaves on these plants are a beautiful deep green and the stalks are really getting thick.

Now its question time. I have been thinking about adding 2-100w MH bulbs to the mix(The bulbs are easy to get from big box store) but have never used them before. Where can I get just the fixtures and ballasts(No grow shops near me, as the closest town is 45 miles away and it has 1 redlight). Like I said I am only thinking about it. and I am cheap!

welp enough rattleing on and time for pictures.

Just a thought, but check the MH bulbs out at the big box store you have access to. Many of these are available (HPS ALSO) with a Medium Base socket that is the standard household type socket everyone is used to. If they have them then you can use any means to power them up. A lot of the bulb manufacturers made them this way for the small home, windowsill type grower who doesn't want a big reflector with the Mogul Base (the large one most reflectors use), and they fit nicely in the (highly available) clamp-on style aluminum reflectors available there also. Just a thought, I used to sell lighting and even Hydro stuff...

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

olderthandirt

kudos on getting a few sprouts.

I have been trying with some 35 yr old seeds and the only thing I got was some white goop that leaked out of one.

I have cracked a few open just to see what is in them, and their isn't much left inside. Maybe a few that were in the middle of the bag may have been protected from the hot cold attic cycles over the years and they might have a better chance. I have hundreds of the Oaxacan with me, and maybe a few dozen each of the others still at my friends house.

I still have some of the Oaxacan here I am going to try, and I will get more of the old beans next time I visit my friend and try to get a sprout.

The seeds I got were marked, so I know the strain. I know I saved them because they were legendary smokes back then. And if I get one of them to sprout, I may become a legend also, lol.

here is the link to my post on the subject.

Will 35 year old seeds sprout

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Hi oldrthandirt,i guess were the same age,(sense thats how i'm referred to). I use 8 26w cfls for veg(built in a box wired in parallel. I have 3 400w ballast and some 400w mh bulbs, but for my money the cfl are cheaper and almost as effencient.
You girls look mighty good +reps for an interesting grow.

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Nice thread!

I think of you go through all the Monster and trim off all the burnt parts itll bounce back. All that dead and semi dead leaf takes up a lot of the plants energy trying to repair it. Better to just ccut it off as then the plant stops using most of its energy for repairs and puts it all back into growing.

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Looking really good oldrthandirt.

Re: 42 yr old bagseed!

Wow! Welcome all to the grow.

Fish, Thank God for the internet cause I hate getting out of the lazy chair! :)

I have seen some 100W MHs at the big box stores but wondered if you needed ballast and all that junk to make em work but if I can use a regular outlet, hey I'm all for it. I'm cheap!

As for the CFLs, I currently am using 14 36W cfls in the hood with 6 more on the back. They are mixed natural light and soft light bulbs. I have done 2 other grows using this set up and had good results. The reasoning behind the wanting the MH is, I have seen such huge colas coming from people using them. So I thought I would give em a shot.

As for Mini monster. Once the heat chills out a bit I was going to trim it hard, then set it on my porch for it to get natural light(the great healer). This plant was the first to pop so I have a bit of sentinental feeling for it so if it just turns into a houseplant so be it. Ain't it crazy how we get attached to certain plants? I still have the first plant I started indoors. It is about 5' tall and just keeps popping colas. I let em grow then cut em off and cure and it just keeps popping them. Just before Christmas it will be 2 years old.

Just message 420 girl. You can message mods with fewer then 50 posts.

I did the same thing with my grow journal when i first started it. She cleared it right up.
