Grow Update, Aug 29 - (with pictures!)
Nothing in flower right now, but a few things I thought I'd share.
My homemade little hydro system finally was (mostly) completed the other day. I am going to test trying to keep some small hydro moms in a little DIY set-up that is primarily DWC, but has periodic floods that will hopefully develop more roots higher in the netpots, and serve to recirculate the nutrients with the remote reservoir. I used flood fittings so that when it floods the nutes that were bubbling in the plant sites get recirculated back to the reservoir through the overflow drain flood fitting. I've been running it for about 3-4 days now, and the clones I put in look good so far and seem happy. I'm pleased so far, but adding another reservoir to my small room really makes things tight...
Veg space, you can see the small tubs that are part of the DIY flooding DWC system I made (there will be one more plant container/tub in a couple of days...) I don't know how this will work out, but the plan is to keep 6 vegging plants in them, as moms or to be transplanted into the Flo N Gro. I've made different tops for each plant site, so they can have 4 smaller plant sites per station vs. 2 for example, if I decide to change how I want to lay things out or prepare for a transplant, etc... The clones in the little DIY hydro in this pic were just transplanted when this was taken - they are starting to look more at home already.
This is a Super Lemon Haze plant in a solo hempy. Not sure what I'm doing with it. Right now, I'm just playing with it bending it around in a big upward spiral (look closely at the trunk). Just me playing:
I like to experiment and play with extra plants/cuttings (I hate killing things so I experiment with them). These are Deadhead Ripper clones from when I forgot to label my clones fully during sexing. Later I discovered that both were females anyway. They are a bit of a marvel as they are growing in rapid rooter plugs the size of a shot glass. I'm a bit amazed at how large, healthy and happy they are despite the tiniest of homes for their roots. Crazy huh? Must be watered daily, or they'll starve.
Here's the tent with the Flo N Gro buckets (and a Jack the Ripper momma). Top Row: Pineapple Express (Patty) and Deadhead Ripper (Jackie). Bottom row, OG Ripper (Betty) and Deadhead Ripper (Debbie). Jack the Ripper mom is in an Airpot with Coco Coir:
Oh, one last thing. I took cuttings from all of the moms to sex the seedlings for the newest crosses I got from my little breeding experiment a couple rounds ago. Two of those cuttings despite going back under 24/0 light, are having a hard time stopping their flower hormones and popped a bunch of trichomes today!
The benefit here is that I was able to rub some leaves and get a sense for what the smell/taste will be like.
One of the Deadhead Rippers is an absolute 100% match to the way Charmin baby diapers smell! It's not exactly unpleasant, but a bit disconcerting and strange, lol... I hope it refines some by the time it's grown out! The other plant was one of the Pineapple Express's and did smell a bit pineapple'ish, with a hint of spiciness and just plain... pine. One of the cool things about growing for a few years now, is that I can really imagine the final smell/taste pretty accurately as soon as there are trichomes to rub together. I never saw Charmin diapers coming, even though within it I can also smell the Deadhead OG influence AND the Jack the Ripper in making up that smell, which is a headtrip. Whudda thunkit?
Even though I'm a bit worried about that smell, the newness and uniqueness of it in relation to any other plant I've smelled makes me excited for the 2 other unique crosses I have going with it. Can't wait to smell 'em, too!
