Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures & Photos From The Garden - 2012

Grow Update, Aug 29 - (with pictures!)

Nothing in flower right now, but a few things I thought I'd share.

My homemade little hydro system finally was (mostly) completed the other day. I am going to test trying to keep some small hydro moms in a little DIY set-up that is primarily DWC, but has periodic floods that will hopefully develop more roots higher in the netpots, and serve to recirculate the nutrients with the remote reservoir. I used flood fittings so that when it floods the nutes that were bubbling in the plant sites get recirculated back to the reservoir through the overflow drain flood fitting. I've been running it for about 3-4 days now, and the clones I put in look good so far and seem happy. I'm pleased so far, but adding another reservoir to my small room really makes things tight...

Veg space, you can see the small tubs that are part of the DIY flooding DWC system I made (there will be one more plant container/tub in a couple of days...) I don't know how this will work out, but the plan is to keep 6 vegging plants in them, as moms or to be transplanted into the Flo N Gro. I've made different tops for each plant site, so they can have 4 smaller plant sites per station vs. 2 for example, if I decide to change how I want to lay things out or prepare for a transplant, etc... The clones in the little DIY hydro in this pic were just transplanted when this was taken - they are starting to look more at home already.

This is a Super Lemon Haze plant in a solo hempy. Not sure what I'm doing with it. Right now, I'm just playing with it bending it around in a big upward spiral (look closely at the trunk). Just me playing:

I like to experiment and play with extra plants/cuttings (I hate killing things so I experiment with them). These are Deadhead Ripper clones from when I forgot to label my clones fully during sexing. Later I discovered that both were females anyway. They are a bit of a marvel as they are growing in rapid rooter plugs the size of a shot glass. I'm a bit amazed at how large, healthy and happy they are despite the tiniest of homes for their roots. Crazy huh? Must be watered daily, or they'll starve. ;)

Here's the tent with the Flo N Gro buckets (and a Jack the Ripper momma). Top Row: Pineapple Express (Patty) and Deadhead Ripper (Jackie). Bottom row, OG Ripper (Betty) and Deadhead Ripper (Debbie). Jack the Ripper mom is in an Airpot with Coco Coir:

Oh, one last thing. I took cuttings from all of the moms to sex the seedlings for the newest crosses I got from my little breeding experiment a couple rounds ago. Two of those cuttings despite going back under 24/0 light, are having a hard time stopping their flower hormones and popped a bunch of trichomes today!

The benefit here is that I was able to rub some leaves and get a sense for what the smell/taste will be like.
One of the Deadhead Rippers is an absolute 100% match to the way Charmin baby diapers smell! It's not exactly unpleasant, but a bit disconcerting and strange, lol... I hope it refines some by the time it's grown out! The other plant was one of the Pineapple Express's and did smell a bit pineapple'ish, with a hint of spiciness and just plain... pine. One of the cool things about growing for a few years now, is that I can really imagine the final smell/taste pretty accurately as soon as there are trichomes to rub together. I never saw Charmin diapers coming, even though within it I can also smell the Deadhead OG influence AND the Jack the Ripper in making up that smell, which is a headtrip. Whudda thunkit? :)

Even though I'm a bit worried about that smell, the newness and uniqueness of it in relation to any other plant I've smelled makes me excited for the 2 other unique crosses I have going with it. Can't wait to smell 'em, too!

Wow... at least the smell is of CLEAN diapers... can you imagine?!

Great little veg space you hot set up there. Kinda looks like mine, but mine is a bit more cramped since it was originally designed for 4 mums, and I'm not up to 8. . . as soon as I see a jandre kush worth the mother spot, that is.

Haha, there are several not pictured. I have 4 more moms typically in that space that got moved to the tent temporarily (they're in non of the pics due to timing). I didn't know what to do with them when I was making my little hydro unit, probably have to kill them now for space reasons. :(

Oh, and yes, clean diapers. I had one that smelled like baby poop once though, "Missy" I called her, cuz she was a mystery bagseed. Believe it or not it was still good in a weird sort of way. What a cross if I'd have saved her and crossed with the Charmin plant!

Hey Xlr8, just dropping by to see what you've been up to. Looking good. My breeding program is doing well, I have hella seeeeeeeeds for days. I am a happy camper. Be well and safe! Oh and a teaser pic.

Wow, beautiful!! I need to get caught up on your thread(s). I pollinated just one bud per plant a couple of grows ago, and ended up with between about 20-50 seeds per plant just from the one bud. I cant imagine a whole pant fully pollinated - would be nuts! Looks :yummy:

GREAT to see you my friend - thanks for stopping by. What a great looking plant! :bravo:

Got Brownies?

Not sure if I already mentioned this, but Greenhouse250 was kind enough to suggest my cooking oil/brownie thread as a "sticky" thread, and it's now a sticky in the edibles forum. :) I worked hard on putting that together, so I was really pleased and honored that it was made a sticky thread (thank you Greenhouse!). :thanks:

It's really for anyone who wants to make brownies or other baked goods with oil, and wants the best oil/brownies/edibles possible. There are simpler recipes and methods, but this one isn't hard, and it really maximizes the cannabis you use - more potent with less cannabis needed. I make both brownies and snicker doodle cookies using the oil made exactly how I laid it out in the thread, and people who've had them RAVE about them. It's awesome seeing how well it's working for others now, too. Thanks again Greenhouse!

I was able to finish my little DIY hydro project, and have now transitioned cuttings from my moms to this new system.
Seems to be working well so far and the cuttings seem to be adapting already. I'm hoping managing another hydro reservoir will be easier for me to manage than having to continually hand-water coco coir moms and all that goes with that (we'll see!).

I'm sure I mentioned this before, but there are 3 small rubbermaid tubs that hold 2 plants each. They are connect with 3/4" tubing to one of them that serves as the control bucket for them all. It's set on a timer for periodic 4 minute flood/drain cycles, but when it isn't flooding, each rubbermaid container retains it's own small reservoir that has a flexible "bubble wand" in it. So, when it isn't flooding/draining (which also helps recirulate the nutrients with the remote reservoir) each unit acts like a DWC tub. The flood/drains recirculate using gravity to a remote reservoir below (rubbermaid trash recepticle) which has a (200 or so?) gph pump in it, and is currently kept aerated as well.

A few of the cuttings have been in about a week now, and are showing vigorous new growth and nice vibrant green leaves. I also disposed of my coco coir moms (all but one SLH and the solo cup SLH) so life will hopefully be a little easier now. It was tough getting rid of the coco coir moms, but I didn't have any room for them now. The pic below is from a couple of days ago, but there are 3 of the plant sites along the bottom now, filling the entire shelf. The reservoir is underneath of them and is controlled by flood/drain risers in the far right rubbermaid tub. There are extra bulkhead fittings on the far right container that allow things to be configured differently. I also made multiple lid configurations to accomodate different needs down the road. I'm using this 4 bulb T5 fixture and some cfl's for vegging, with more T5's on the top shelf above, which will be primarily for projects and new cuttings, etc.

Another advantage of going this route, is that they can be easily moved from this hydro system into the Flo N Gro, which was another downfall of the coco coir moms (they couldn't easily be placed in the Flo N Gro). I wish I had more room, but I'm trying to make the most of what I do have. :)

From 2 days ago - there are now three plant sites, accomodating 6 plants on the bottom shelf. The reservoir is underneath them:

Hey there Brother X! I just got caught up and I'd tell you how great your plants look and what a great job you did on your DIY hydro project, but I'm still too floored at how awesome the SLH looks to speak! :)

Absolutely stellar job all around! :bravo:

Super Lemon Haze #2 and then Super Lemon Haze 1..... I happen to be smoking same at this moment so I may be a little infuenced toward the SLH.

THey are all gorgeous!!!!

Hey Xlr My Lady wants to try the recipe you posted. That little grow cabinet looks quite busy. Keep it up and Keepem Green

My Vote set 2 of Super Lemon Haze. :thumb:

Thanks guys, that's my favorite too - should just trust my gut! +rep for the feedback, I feel like a goof for asking, but I always seem to misjudge what will get votes for this one. . :thankyou: a ton

The oil/brownie recipe is real deal, so just tell her not to eat too many of them at once. ;) I think 1 standard sized brownie is probably enough for most seasoned tokers. Maybe 2, if real high tolerance. Depends on quality of material, too, but I know how good your ingredients will be, haha!

I really simplified now - clones of what's in the tent, plus Chocolope and Super Lemon Haze, which are both exceptional btw. I've been growing mostly sativa though, and while I love it, I could use a good indica to help me sleep. Busy is tough for me these days. Time to think a bit simpler, hopefully. :phew:

Hope your wife likes the recipe if you guys try it - thanks for dropping by Wood, good to see you my friend. :)

Went with set 2 of pics for NOTM with the Super Lemon Haze. My gut was leaning that way, and that's where the initial feedback was (thanks again guys!). I see Jandre already has a (very nice!) nug in there, too. Should be fun! :)
