Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures & Photos From The Garden - 2012

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Hi Jandre -

Actually, I think he was/is deciding between the BPN organic nutrients vs. the Subcool Super Soil route. I think what he was saying is that he landed on trying the Super Soil for his soil grow, but if he ever did hydro he'd go with the BPN line.

One thing I'm going to postulate on though, is that I think of the two, the BPN organic nutrients would be the easiest to get good results with right away. I think there's a bit of an art to building good soils, and Super Soil is so amped up that you have little margin for error. From what I've gathered anyway.

My guess is that the organic nutrients from Blue Planet are going to be pretty straight forward to use and they'll get you up and running much quicker to boot, but I haven't used them personally. Plus, the customer service if something gets out of whack somehow? Priceless!

Both can be great routes for soil growing from what I've seen, though. But, take that with a grain of "salt" as I'm a hydro grower! :)

Thanks again XL :D

I hate to be hijacking your thread here and there....but I thought I'd run another question by you...
I have a whole set of un-used Canna Aqua Vega, Aqua Flores, and Cannazym from a previous hydro grow.
I am trying soil this time...can I use these nutes in soil? I know it probably wouldn't be ideal, but what would the drawbacks be, instead of buying a whole new nute line for soil?

Hehehe, I would actually mix those nutes at 1/4 strength once the plants sap the soil nutrients and feed them with that every watering. Of course I'd increase and tweak for the veg or flower stage, but that's just me

Jandre's right, also watch your pH as soem hydro foods are buffered to a hydro pH.

I've never grown in soil, but I'd probably do what Jandre recommends as well. In fact, I plan on using some of my old hydro nutrients to do something similar with some non cannabis garden plants outside. JBC's point is a good one, too, the PH may need some minor tweaking to bring it to the proper PH level for soil, first. :)

Thanks for the great tips Jandre and JBC!

Naphtali, don't ever sweat asking those questions here. I never intened this to be just another standard grow journal... I wanted it to be more an exchange of ideas/info/tips, and some cool pics now and then. Your questions fit perfectly with that, so your helping actually! ;)

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Wow, flowering plants have reallly taken off. It's like they're on steroids the last few days, but we are at that time... about day 15? of bloom. The Deadhead OG is really trying to stretch on me, and it was the one that was difficult last grow, too. Overall though the canopy is still pretty even, but I'm running out of room and places to move things to as far as tying down branches.. I can't wait to clean it up in there and do some defoliation, etc.

I saw a tiny little bug near the grow room last night, but the thing hopped away like it was rocket launched before I could ID it. Sigh. So, I sprayed the perimeter of grow room with Home Defense Max, sprinkled diatemacious earth on top of the coir and around the plants in veg. I also stayed "out of" of the bloom tent last night, choosing only to peek through a window (my tent has windows that velcro closed). I didn't see wings on the bug in the brief moment I saw it, and it did seem to "hop" when I got close to it. I'm hoping that whatever it is, it succombs to the Hot Shot pest strip or some other defense before it gets to the plants or lays eggs, etc. Maybe it's just a harmless thing, too. I freak now at the thought of dealing with another pest invasion!

Other than that, things look good. I wanted to get into the tent to move things around and change bulbs (still have MH in there), but thought it most prudent to limit access due to seeing the bug.

I'll try to get some pics tonight.

Great to hear about the plants taking off!! Look forward to see the pictures!
I had to chuckle a little when you talked about the bug and how you sprang into action! Of course the little bastard ran when he saw you, he was scared sh*tle$$!! You have become a great bug warrior!

Heheh, I dump all my nutes on changeout day on the lawn in back of my apartment. Everyone marvels at how green my grass is... ROFL if they only knew about the grass INDOORS!

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Hi Bchris -

You are right about judging success and failure, but sometimes it's all easier said than done. ;) I am only comfortable growing for myself at this point, but I really appreciate the compliment that went with that. :) Subcool does a great job of "giving back" and sharing his knowledge, alright. DocBud is good and knows his stuff especially when it comes to soils. Thanks again for the very kind words! I hope you start a journal when you start your grow. In a year and a half, you'll be so well prepared! :thumb:

Hey X,

I cannot disagree. Things usually are easier said than done.. Especially when ur talking about battles within. When my time comes I am hoping to be as informed as possible to limit my setbacks. I do plan on starting a journal. It will probably start with the construction of my grow rooms and go from there. It would be awesome to have members such as yourself following along :thumb:

Not to be argumentative here, but, BPN has a totally organic line for you dirt fellas. It's not just for hydro, y'know.

hey Jandre,

I didnt take it as being argumentative. As I stated before I consider myself a student of the plant. I am learning new things everyday and who knows what I will end up doing.. Right now I am just excited to learn.. Thanks for the info!!

Here's a 420Mag staff review of the stuff.

If I was to start today I would go with Super Soil, but who knows.. Having BPN support in the Journals is huge and I really respect them for that and as far as the results go, you just can't argue with em. One thing I heard about Hydro organic Nutes is there are a lot of complications, but again this is coming from my limited knowledge. I plan on doing a lot of research on BPN organic Nutes for soil and hydro. IMO they definitely have earned that respect. Take care X

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Thanks to all who commented on my question regarding the Canna hydro nutes in a soil grow, I really appreciate it! I'm too damn poor to buy any soil specific nutes right now :D

Thanks XL, for allowing me to ask questions here!

Kind regards

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Hey X, since this is a forum for questions and answers...

Do you have a tutorial on harvesting? stuff like how to get the gum hash off your scissors, etc? Sort of a tips and tricks? I saw on OMM's thread about humidity % for curing, but I just wiped my scissors with alcohol swab then read in HMG's journal how his scissors hash was the best part of harvest!!

Anyway, thanks for being here.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

hey xl no prob on the write up, i love getting a chance to give back, after all i have surely received much from this community, you should grow some hbd its really great stuff i think, the berry smell is so pronounced and i would wonder if it was just that one plant except that i have heard other growers say the same ,granny for one im gonna pop 6 or so this fall so i can get the colors from cool temps,
guys you all prolly know im a bpn guy i have like 20 bottles all the lines, i have tested stuff for corey and i know you can use bpn organics in passive hydro with coco, like hempys, earthboxes wick systems, and some of the addtives like dark matter and kbud are working for me in dwc, so some stuff to add there,

i used to run my waste out a tub drain that went to the garden in my old place we had the biggest n best veggies that year and never fertilized the whole year i wanna do that again but i have to build a whole new garden and surround it with barb ed wire to keep the bastardo cows out, they wiped out 6 bubble buckets that had huge plants going destroyed the equipment too by trampling it, and federal law sez i cant lay a finger on them or i go by by for a decade! but my wiener dog can not set foot outside off his leash!! unless hes fenced in, ah well i have dwc watermelons in my bathroom!!! i think im gonna do a veg/hydro gro in the garage with my spare 600

oh yeah my new journal is up with the first vid posted if you are interested! well off i go to harass someone else

Since you threw my name in here, I'll tell you what I did. I take a clean razor blade and scrape my scissors and pull that off, roll it up and :roorrip:. :yummy:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

I've had company at home the last couple of days, so sorry for the absence. :) I only have a second, so for now I thought I'd throw some pics up, and I'll try to get more caught up when I have a bit more time (hopefully today/tomorrow sometime).

I germinated some new seeds. Specifically some Pineapple Express, and 2 strains from my breeding experiment (I crossed my Jack the Ripper male with an OG Kush female, a Deadhead OG female, and another Jack the Ripper female. I germinated 2 each of the "OG Ripper" and the "Deadhead Jack" (the working names I have for them at this point). It should be fun to see what comes of them. All 6 seeds germinated succesfully and are looking great. I've put them in small airpots with coco coir (hydroton on top to discourage bugs).

A couple of them stretched a little, because of company at home and a lack of access to the grow space (I had them in the humidity dome with the clones and they really took off. They were moved closer to the lights after the picture was taken.

These were taken 2 days ago, about day 15 bloom:

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Glad to see your plants are doing so well! I took your seedling advise and started some seeds in the humidity dome. One popped already! Thanks to you this is the way I am going to start seeds from here on out. I really like the fact that I can now place them in pots easier than if I would have started them in a paper towel like I used to.
Looks like your flowers are forming nicely too!!
:goodjob:
There is a question that I had that OMM thought you covered in one of your journals. It is about the time frame for harvesting. What is the window in a plants life where the plant has the most THC?

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Closet Farmer

I use sort of mini humidity domes to sprout now with better success rate than paper towels and such.

I use a few different easy methods that basically do the same thing, keep moisture in.

I use 32 oz styrofoam cups and put a clear deli container lid over it, fits perfect, and the big cup has lots of room for the roots to spread.

Also I use 16 oz plastic colored cups with a 12 or 16 oz clear cup upside down over the cup works great and mainly how I clone now. Real good for cloning one or two plants.

Also I have used the clear cups upside down over the seed area in a large pot.

All three methods are working good, and no handling of a delicate seed or sprout.

Those are all great ideas! I am definately not going to do the paper towel method again. Not having to handle the sprout is a big advantage. Thanks!
