Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures & Photos From The Garden - 2012

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

Hey, X, things are looking good bro, can i ask a quick question, have you had any dealings with autos,

Yes, check out the 3rd link in my signature "Big Bang Auto" grow. I've only grown one, but I was happy with how it turned out.

My advice on autos:

Don't top them or defoliate them. If you want to get more light to budsites, stick to tucking leaves out of the way. Autos should be thought of as "in flower" from the day you start them. Any trimming, topping or defoliating takes flowering time away from the plant by stressing it.

Lighting period: Unless otherwise suggested by the breeder, 20/4 is a nice lighting schedule for auto-flowers.

Other than that, they grow about the same!

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

@ Xlr8, thanks for the info mate, i managed to get a a seed called poisen dwarf auto fem, for a couple of quid off net, my problem is due to losing my fiance to a drunken driver i have had to give up work due to my health and this made my insomnia get a lot worse, ive got 2 amazing kids so need to be strong for them, aged 5 n 6, as im out of work money is very tight so thats why i chose cfl's as i had shed loads of 2700k bulbs lying around, i recon all ive spent is roughly 25 so far, i have to make life as good as i can for my kids but working a minimum wage job wouldnt even cover child care costs while im at work, im a qualified car mechanic by trade but due to the financial blip my country is going through their are just no jobs, so i dont have any spare money really, so im doing my best to buy the odd seed here and their and sometimes i just buy 1 seed and end up getting 3 free, herbies head shop a sponsor on here does this offer and also great offers when you spend over a certain amount, but i bought a seed for £3.50 and £5 postage and ended up getting 3 seeds. 1 of the free ones was a fem so i should at least get one fem, anyway ill stop rambling on, i managed to get this poisen dwarf fem auto for cheap and a free seed with it as well, and wanted to try groing an auto due to short growth cycle, so this means no pruning or topping etc, just leave it as it is, well i ordered it last night and it should be here tomorrow, postal times here are very good and i get message saying it was posted 1st class recorded, i also got myself a load of pipe cleaners to tie leaves and stems back to let the light get to the plant better,

so you dont think it would be good to wack it under 24-0 from day 1, i dont need to adjust the lighting schedule as if im right they flower under any condition, could i just ask how big they get and if their worth spending money on, is it a way of getting a regular crop or would i get more yield using normal seeds over a longer growth period, or would say
5 to 10 autos would work out better, any chance you can take cuttings from auto's as well, sorry for rambling on on your journal mate.

reading your auto journal now so it might answer a lot of my questions, cheers mate

First, I'm really sorry to hear about your financial woes - I'll just say that I can relate a lot. I really hope things work out for you and your family. I know how tough things can get when money is tight.

24/0 may work great, but sometimes autos seem to need some incentive to flower hence even a little "dark" time. I'm pretty sure 20/4 is what I did, and I grew a pretty nice plant for an auto.

You can't take clones/cuttings from autos - they can't be kept alive indefinitely, so they are a grow and done sort of thing. Unfortunately!

You can definitely get a good yield under the right circumstances. I got something like 4.7z from mine. Some autos yield much better than others. I'm not familiar with yours.

I think an autoflower is the ideal strain for your lighting situation, truthfully. You're headed the right direction for sure.

Good luck with your plants and more importantly your family. X

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

thanks mate, it gets slightly easier everyday n having my kids with me helps, i tell myself its to make us stronger and things can only get better,

thanks for advice on auto mate, if i took a cutting and the plant was starting to flower then does that mean the cuttings will continue to flower without any veg time, im just reading your journal on auto's now, its new concept to me their was no autos when i grew years ago so it would be good to see how the grow and flower, it sounds like you get a decent yield off your auto, so in theory i can keep the lighting schedule the same say 20-4, but if i buy a few seeds and say waited a month between each seed then i could more or less crop every months giving me regular smoke, it would be good to get a male and a female auto and get my own seed stock, and as long as their both autos then the new seeds should be auto, i have read they get the auto from the rudralis side of the plants,

thanks for the info and kind words, ill have a look at your journal and take some notes
reps mate for the above

Just keep it simple - don't take any cuttings from autos ever - you should only take cuttings from indica/sativa plants without ruderalis. You'll always come out better not cutting an auto. The yield from the cutting will not equal what you would have gotten by keeping it on the plant.

I'm not familiar with breeding autos, but I'd suggest reading up on it good so you know what to expect.

Re: Xlr8's Hydroponic Adventures and Photos from the Garden - 2012

thanks mate, ill have a good read on it, just in case i get a male and female auto, not sure how it would work due to short flower period or even if its possible to cross them, so it is rudralis they cross the plants with to produce auto flowering seeds,

ill have a good look on net as i would be interested in staying with auto as long as i get the result im looking for, but worse case i could alway by packs of 10 seeds and plant them a month to 6weeks apart then i should have a regular harvest even if the yield was low, im only growing for myself so ill be happy what ever the results are,

you always give good advice, i appreciate it mate

Thought I'd take a couple of pics of some of the gals in veg. Remember the Chocolope seedling? Since I put her in a 1 gal. Smartpot, shes been focusing almost solely on root development, and she has roots all along the bottom of her pot already. Finally, the last few days she's starting to develop a little more up top -- she's still tiny, but healthy and happy and about to really start taking off:

Here is how the Deadhead OG clone (future mom?) is looking, she's been getting tied down and twisted around:

This is the Jack the Ripper clone (future mom?), she hasn't had any training yet:

I have to say, these plants that I've been vegging in coco coir are the healthiest, happiest looking vegging plants I've grown. In person the leaves on all of these plants shine - such a pretty green with a healthy look and feel to the leaves. It's been a lot of fun having these to dote on in addition to the flowering plants. :)

They look great. I must say that now using BPN with my vegging plants in coco I'm loving it.

:thankyou:

I so agree on the coco/nutes. It's amazing how much they seem to like the combo. Makes things fun when they're so happy and easy to please.

Thanks for the picture bump too, my friend. Hope your back is feeling better - sorry for griping about mine in your thread. I can completely relate at the moment, though.

Hey XL! Nice to see you're still at it! Everything is looking excellent as far as I can see from your recent updates! :)

Just wanted to let you know that I am back in action here for the 2012 growing season, and just completed my GDP and Blue Cheese cloning session to get my lineup for this year's outdoor grow.

Stop over and have a look when you get a chance!

Look forward to chatting with you as always during this new season!

Cheers. :)
