Xlr8's "Flo N Gro" Hydro Multiple Strains 2011

Hey Xlr8 good to be here, It has taken me a couple of hours over a few nights to get through your journal and what a sensational read it has been loads of tips, pics, and even include videos im a sucker for a vid.

Oh, and I'm still using MH lighting for now as I'm trying to limit stretch a bit. I'll switch to HPS in another 5-7 days. Nice trick for indoor HID growers if you haven't tried it... Keeps node spacing tighter and vertical height a bit less aggressive if you use MH during bulk of "stretch" period. Plants stretch more with HPS as it's not as efficient of energy source as MH, (but plants like reds in the HPS for flowering so much). I've done this a few times now, and it seems to help. ;)

I am one of them who switch the bulb to HPS when the timer is set to 12/12 thanks for this i have been trying to figure out why my stretch is more then what most other growers, guess im starving them of there most precious kelvin :adore: :thanks:

Ive watched all 7 seasons at least a dozen times, it only gets better each time. Best show of all time next to Entourage and Breaking Bad, Im going to see their live show soon, cant reveal when as my location would be revealed lol

Nice video - sums him I mean me up good.

Sweet! I had no idea they were touring. Gonna have to check that out! :thumb:

Hi GodSpeed, and :welcome:

First of all Thanks! Glad you liked the journal so far - way cool. I'm not sure how much difference the bulb thing actually makes, but I do believe it helps. I think it's definitely interesting and telling that my plants under the "bluer" bulb in this grow have stayed shorter. Even the supposedly notorious stretcher - Lavender. Sometimes inside, you need every little bit of help to keep height down.

Hope you stick around 'til the finish - good to have you here. :)

I agree with you that the lights do make a difference as I have done similar experiments. I found that the blue lights produce a smaller but sometimes more resinous bud in flower than the hps. I'm sure that they also have an affect on the stretching during flowering. I have plants that were under a 600w hps in veg and are now in their new home in the flower room under hps lights but 18/6 schedule so I can continue to veg and weave them in their scrog for a few weeks.

One thing I have always wondered about...

Do you guys have switches or something on those LED fixtures that let you choose what colors the LEDs are? I have read things from people talking about light angle, wavelengths etc. and was curious if you have control over all these things, or if they are just ON and OFF like a T5 fixture, and all that stuff is set at the factory.

Thanks in advance for answering a question I have wondered about for a long time and just never thought to ask! :)

Some LED's will have switches that let you go from "veg mode" to "flower mode" or control some of the bands. But, most are "solid state" and are not switchable.

What about the BlackStar you bought? Is that fixed with no adjustments?

Just wondering how you can use a single fixture if it is "tuned" for one specific task like flowering or veg? I assume that you guys primarily use these for flowering since that seems to be where I always see these things deployed, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks again in advance for the additional info! I feel that if I start asking questions now, by the time I get ready to take the plunge, I will know a lot more!

Still going to be awhile for me though. The next major purchase I plan to make is a new camera! With my 420 activities demanding high quality photos, I am starting to really push the limits of of 12 year old Olympus C-2000z, especially when it comes to close up macro shots of buds and trichomes. I have my eye on their brand new E-P3 which is getting rave reviews everywhere on the web! Only downside is the $900.00 price tag! ;)

No, the BlackStar is NON switchable. Because it's a 6-band light, it can be used in veg, but it's got a much higher concentration of reds, so it's primarily made for flower. However, LightHouse does make some models that are specifically made for veg.

As you know, the plants are much less picky about the lights in veg than they are about the lights in flower, so just about any LED made for flower will have enough blues to also get you by in veg, it just won't be "optimized" for veg.

Traditionally, the thoughts on LED's were "use 'em for veg and not flower". IMHO, it hasn't been until fairly recently, maybe the last couple of years, that the spectrums have been "tuned" and the chips powerful enough to use in flower (I wouldn't even think about flowering with 1w LED's which would be fine in veg!).

Hi xlr8! :peace:

Man, this journal flies! I'm still looking at those great pictures of your plants,
which by the way are so healthy. Go Lucy!

I'm enjoying the light discussion too....since I have both kind of bulbs.
Great Journal my Friend! :thanks:

Cool! Thanks for the additional info! I always assumed that they were just for flower cause that is the stage the plants always seem to be in in these LED grows until I started seeing everyone with these BLUE lights all if a sudden.

LED growers are blazing a trail we're all destined to go down eventually - those of us indoors. LED's will dominate the indoor grow scene within 5 years. It's just been a matter of conquering flowering, and price. The first one is almost there, and the second will be there soon. The temperature and energy advantages are so obvious as to not need further elaboration. I wish I could afford "the good" LED lights. I'd be blazing that trail too! :cheer:

Mr. Krip - Congrats on MOTM. :bravo: Couldn't have gone to a nicer more deserving guy. Twelve12 gave a good run for someone who asked to not be voted for, too. Many good nominees this month!

GoldenGoose7 - Way to go on POTM - Beautiful plant brother. :high-five:

Oh, and sending positive vibes to my good friend OMM - sure hope you start feeling a bit better. Hang in there buddy!

Aloha my friend! I was just thinking of you and sent you a little message in my last post. Then I check - and hey a post from OMM! Sure hope you are feeling a bit better. I know how hard it is to win the battle you're fighting right now with that f*cking nicotine, and it was tough hearing how poorly and out of sorts you are feeling. :goodluck:

Oh, and :thanks: about the plants. They really are super healthy, and I'm thrilled with how things are working with both the new system and the new nutrients. I feel like you felt when you finally got the Matterhorn up and running and humming along. :yahoo:

I hope you being here means you aren't feeling as out of sorts. Take care my friend, you know what you mean to me! :high-five:

Hi Buddy! :high-five:

That's what it means......the first day was a killer......feeling much better now. Haven't been coughing either. It's working. Thanks xlr8! :thumb:

Hey OMM!

Quitting smoking? Its tough, but I always found it easier to quit off of the kind you roll yourself with the tubes and the can of additive free tobacco!

I quit for two years but started again a week ago after we lost our cat Kimba. I just couldn't stand the anxiety and stress so I drove all the way into town to buy a carton! I knew I would be smoking more than a pack!

Seriously though... It is VERY hard to quit off of commercial cigs because they actually put stuff in them to make them more addicting! If you smoke the natural non additive kind, it is far easier to quit without all that extra time and feeling like crap!

I will be quitting again soon I hope. But right now, I need them to get through the day. As you know, once you are a smoker, you're always a smoker, and all it takes is a major incident to get you right back into it again!

Good luck!

The new Diamond Series from Advanced has switches that you can adjust the spectrum. I have a picture of the three modes in my 5.1 journal. There's a blue mode for veg/seedlings/new clones, a red mode for flower and you can run both for full power. I am running my 800w in full power mode. I started them off under the blue mode for the first week though to get them acclimated to the lights.

Great Job Buddy, just stopping into show some love as I have nothing to add to this awesomeness. You had mentioned me visiting more of other peoples Journals. Here I am I ventured out LOL. No I mostly just lurk right now, I visit a ton of peoples journals, but I am so "green" at this I don't ever give advice (even if its glaringly obvious) and I don't want to seem like a troll that is just trying to drum up interest in my journal lol. IMO nothing is more lame then the guy that hi-jacks your journal by asking questions (as a reason to explain there grow in detail via your popular journal) IDK maybe this is me just being hostile. LOL anyway love your grow and am taking notes furiously!

Hey BK!

You'd be welcome over on my journal any time! Lot of the same folks that hang out here also hang out over there including our good friend XL! :)

I don't think there is such a thing as a stupid question and if you know the answer to someone's problem you should give it to them! No one around here is going to accuse you of trolling as long as you are sincere in your desire to help! :thumb:

Its a troll in the dungeon!!!

O sorry, breathingkush, i wasnt talking about you, that was the second Harry Potter movie. Let me turn that volume down...

You overestimate the hostility of the 420community. You should know that the work we do is peaceful work, and that there is never really any hard feelings to any members, except maybe the spammers and recruiters for other sites. But us (including you of coarse) genuine members dont biy into any of the spam bologne. All input is usually welcomed and embraced no matter how long/short detailed/vague a response, and no matter how often the user is on.

That said we all take pride in our achievements, and why not show it off? In an uncocky manner preferably but yea. Thats why we have POTM and NOTM, right? The only thing I wouldnt take lightly to is some big shot "my method or my plants are better than yours, blah blah" but that type of person probably doesnt stay with us for too long, for many obvious reason.

To make a long ramble short: Your input is welcome at all times, as long as it pertains to the subjects at hand, which most journals have many.

Hey BK! :thanks: for the props and kinds words - appreciate it a lot. Good for you getting out in the world, haha. It just takes a bit of time getting comfortable interacting and chiming in, or at least it did for me. I mostly lurked off and on here for over a year before really becoming more active. I actually don't mind at all people asking questions or bringing up their grow in my journal. I'm pretty laid back I guess, and just happy if I can help!

Really appreciate you dropping by. Hope your shoulder is feeling better. That looked pretty painful!

BK has this great little tutorial on his site for making this stuff called BHO (hippy cr@ck, earwax, honey oil). Definitely something that was new to me. Pretty cool! :high-five:
