Xlr8's "Flo N Gro" Hydro Multiple Strains 2011

Hi Buddy :)

Here's Columbian Gold that I did nothing but FIMing to her. Works.:yummy:

Hi OMM -

Wow. :bravo: What a beautiful picture and plant! FIMing certainly worked well there! :welldone:

I keep getting high and making hasty decisions with a scissors in my hands. Today, I wasn't happy with my decision to try a couple of different approaches at once. I started thinking, I have multiple strains, multiple heights, multiple finish times, even a Sativa in a separate hydro bucket -- why do I need to try multiple topping techniques right now? I then lopped the heads off of the Magic Bud and Skywalker #2 that I had fimmed. However, I decided to top Skywalker #2 above the 3rd node (for real this time, haha) instead of UBT. In theory that should create 8 tops. That particular Skywalker had really tightly stacked nodes (5-6 of them, and she was only about 6" tall, a real bush!

Thanks for sharing that beautiful picture and proof of fimming as a concept. I'm thinking I may just try that again, but I went Lizzy Borden again today. ;)

My current Grow 5.0 is with mature clones that were topped/FIM'ed in the cloner, with the with the nodes being staggered. I did not document the results, but will on the next grow (since that is what I do, clone-top-bloom).

I would say that from my current grow, it works on mature clones. I would say to top/FIM them as early as possible to keep them bushy until they stretch.

Hi Steve -

You really have a great looking bunch of plants going - I know that! :)

I'll have to give Fim'ing a better shot next time. Appreciate you sharing that.

Sounds like they behave about the same as any other clone. I like LST so much, but it's a lot of work for me, especially when I'm having physical health issues. I can't wait to get more polished with my topping skills - you seem to have it down really well. :bravo:

Okay, I mentioned it in my post to OMM, but I decided today I have way to many variables and differences I'm juggling already, and I'm not sure I fimmed correctly anyway, so I went ahead and topped the Magic Bud and Skywalker #2 that I'd originally attempted to FIM. I also topped the Lavender. I felt like I didn't need more variables going on if that makes sense. I did, however, top the Skywalker #2, an already really bushy plant, above the 3rd node instead of the 2nd node, to see how I like that level of topping.

Also I'm going to be away from my computer/offline for a day or two, just to give a heads up, in case I don't reply right away to something. :)

Here's a few pics from this morning:

See you all in a day or two! Thanks again everyone for the great info and advice on topping/fimming. I really do appreciate it.

Hi Xlr8,

Love the Lizzi Borden analogy, this was my first time cutting plants too.

I'm glad to see we're trying the same thing on our seedlings, I can't wait to see how they all turn out. I think maybe I UBT'd mine a bit early, but the growth today is really amazing. I did accidentally cut too much and I'll only get 3 main colas but I can really see them coming in now and it's only been 3 days. I may go back and UBT another one

Great Grow...will be watching. Good Luck. :yummy:

Sorry I'm so late to the party X. Very nice journal and a nice, clean setup! I'm in for the rest of the ride!

:welldone:

Hey there 420fied - :welcome:

Love what you are doing with your perpetual SOG. :bravo:

I'm really glad you're following along with Sqwheels's new grow, too. She's a great lady and I think you have a lot to offer as far as what you've been able to do with same grow style. :thumb:

Glad you're here. Fire up the :bong: and make yourself comfy!

B E A U T I F U L plants! :)

Thanks Greenie!

I just saw that you have a journal -- I'm sorry I haven't been by sooner! I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the really nice compliment and bringing a smile to my face. :)

Yep, looking great X:thumb: Hope you get to feeliong better brother!

Thanks buddy! Love how positive you always are Quix. Literally, it picks me up!

:thanks: Sqwheels!

I appreciate that - you are rocking this hobby so far - it's so fun to watch you get as addicted to this hobby as the rest of us. Glad you're here, Sqwheels, and thanks for catching the Lizzy Borden analogy. ;)

My plants looked amazing today after a only a couple of days since the topping, I'm loving it already.

Take care my friend! :)

Great grow so far, awesome discussions..

5 stars! :)

:peacetwo:

:thankyou: Marley - really really cool buddy.

I appreciate that and I agree there have been some great discussions, because they've sure helped me out! :) I don't know why I never topped before, seems like a no-brainer already.

Did you top when you grew that (really amazing) single plant scrog - I can't remember? Seems like it would be a really useful tool for a scrog...

Geewilikers that skywalkers taking over your grow room like it was the death star! Theyre all Looking great X keep it up!

Hi MB!

Yeah, remember I posted that last pic and said that I topped it at the 3rd node instead of the 2nd? I recounted, and it was the 4th, so I lopped off another level to get it to the 3rd (a few moments later) and retook the picture. Posted the wrong one, but the RIGHT one still looks almost that bushy, hence my oversight on the picture. You'll see what I mean, I'll probably post a few new pics tomorrow, only because it's pretty cool to see the growth auxins already in action - I love it!

Hi X

I know what you mean about the growth rate after being chopped. Tooo Coool...and yes, I'm completely addicted to growing. I know what you mean about the UBT topping being a no brainer, the growth after just a couple days is amazing. Actually I'm still confused about the terms...the UBT can only be done to a seedling, Right? you wouldn't be able to get the same results from a clone or more mature plant that doesn't have symetrical growth...Am I getting this picture right?

Hi Steve, according to Uncle Ben, you can use UBT on clones -

"To get 4 main colas, let your seedling or cutting (clone) grow to about 5-6 nodes and pinch out (cut) the stem just above the 2nd true node. The node where the cotyledons attach doesn't count. The result will be a redistribution of the auxins and other hormones that normally collect in the tissue of the terminal leader's tip. These ho moans will be redistributed to dormant buds that reside in the nodal axis where the leaf petiole attaches to the "trunk", below the cut. The new foliar output response will be quick (within 24 hrs., see photo below) if you have a healthy growing seedling and will be your future main colas - 4 instead of the usual 1" Uncle Ben

Hi Sqwheels!

My understanding is that you can absolutely do a UBT or other topping on a clone (sexually mature or not).

The journal has been moving along pretty fast, but there were a couple of other similar questions, and I'm posting the quoted responses as well, since I'm as new or newer to this as you. As far as a more mature plant, should work as long as it's still in veg, but if growing indoors you probably don't want to wait too long before doing the topping for height reasons. I knows you didn't ask this, but I've also seen people top the new tops, so to speak. It all serves to make the plant a little bushier in the end.

SteveHman mentioned that he has topped mature clones just like any others with good results - and he has some beautiful plants that he's done this way. Hope that helps! :)
