XLR8's BCNL Mixed Strain Hydro Grow 2011

In order to keep the watering abundance down slightly a larger hempy is most definitely required to start the whole game. However well 2liters do work i can water mine on a good day at least twice. I like to start small ones in a 1gal then transplant into a 3.5 gal. Any more after that and you may as well go to the 7gal, i will have a few mothers in my grow that will probably need a 7gal just before they transfer to bud.

In order to leave my 3.5gals for more than 2 24 hours days i would simply fill a 20oz wrapped up in some tape or painted over, with some nice 5.5ph water, heat up a pin with a bic and poke 2 or 3 holes in the top of the cap. Flip it upside down and make it stand in your hempy, wallah a good 3-5 day supply of ph'd h20.

Other than that i have seen someone here on 420 with a bad ass drip system set up for their 2 liter hempy's, for all practicality of the situation and considering hempy is so gol' damn cheap to start with, you may as well build yourself a 20 dollar drip system, im sure it would be worth time and money spent i have 2 water at least a few things in my grow every single day so, im rambling hope i answered some ?'s 4 ya

Blazin - awesome ideas and thoughts on the Hempies. I really appreciate your input - I need it! If/when I do it, I'm going to need all the help I can get, too. I think it would be cool to make a drip system for it all.

Is it really as simple as everyone says? Is there a better way than perlite/osmocote +, or is that the tried/true way?

I should probably hit up Bandit, too - doesn't he have some sort of drip/hempy thing going? Or is his more of a ebb and grow sort of deal? What's the difference? Shit I'm blazed. I'll have to go look at his again, too.

I truly appreciate the input Blazin! Great idea on the 20 oz., too. :thanks:

Wow. It seems like the verified genetics just seem to grow faster and much more regular than, say, bagseed.

Hi Smokey - nice to see you around again btw! :high-five:

I'm not sure what to read into the bagseed thing, but I can't argue with you so far. Honestly it's the first time I've tried to grow out bagseed. Just germed it as a backup in the beginning, but it turned out I needed the backup. Will be interesting to see how it finishes fo sho!

I'm really kicking myself on bagseed. I didn't know squat about seeds until a couple of years ago, and put any and all bagseed in the same place. Knowing what I know now, there are some amazing strains straight from Humboldt in there, and some brick weed crap seeds, too. For example, some of the good stuff had 1-2 seeds over a couple of z of bud - probably female seeds.

Why didn't I give 'em their own little container, labeled, for future use? I guess I know why - didn't think I'd be growing my own. I keep thinking though - what if this from some of the dank OG Kush or Purple Urkle I had? Probably not, though, lol. There's like 4 seeds like that in a bag of 100 from the last 5 years or so. Man I ramble when I'm high.... :bong:

Fill the tub with two inches of water dangle a light on the end of a cord over the shower curtain rod and then use a cfl for a few days on a timer on an extension cord. Turn off the bathroom light close door, go away for at least a week. Two weeks might be three inches of water. When you get home you manage the o2 def the ph will be too high, the fan leaves on the under side will be yellowing but that's like an hour of cleanup.

I heard of a guy in college dorm in my day that put a setup like that in his private bath before Xmas vacation that were 4 weeks into 12 . He ran a trough of water to the back of the tub and left the water on low low just draining, its auto-flow, when he got back to school he had buds and they were okay. It was airy but it was fully developed, mature. Even on the incredibly low light in the final weeks.

Killer deal on the light! That ought to be real nice using a bathroom. Water and all. I'll very much look forward to seeing your hempy undertaking. ;)

I can even take a leak as needed.

In all seriousness - it's so friggin perfect almost as is. I've been hinting to my wife for months now about how perfect it is. Nobody ever uses it - why not?

She's close to bending. I know I can get her to give me at least one go of it... (She is a supportive partner in all of this and even helps with res. changes, trimming, PH balancing from time to time). So it's not as tough of a sell as it might seem. I can win her over with painting her a word picture that includes rows of jars full of buds that she loves too, lol.

Thanks McCrackin - now that's something to ponder over! You're right - in a pinch you could do something like this I'm sure. Wouldn't that drown the roots - or is that what you're saying with the O2 deficiency? I'm not too familiar with hempy yet...

I also wonder about those glass bulb things that water over time. I've seen people use them here for soil where they leave town for a week or so. Could they work in perlite with a Hempy? I really appreciate the ideas!!

Stoner creativity rules. 'Nuff said. :)
:high-five:

Was feeling like taking a couple more pictures - just thought these turned out nice:

Just a shot of a fan leaf I pulled to make room for a couple of budsites. I don't usually remove a healthy leaf - but this one was really blocking a couple of lower bud sites so I yanked it. Just thought it was pretty on it's own:

A few Blueberry bud shots - none of these are the main cola, which is hidden a bit and hard to photograph:

Here's a Missy bud from a lower budsite (most of her buds are hidden behind the Blueberry). She's a bit behind to say the least!

XLR8, you can't overwater a hempy...it just drains out the hole. You'd end up diluting the nutes pretty quickly, but it would certainly keep them alive for a couple of weeks or so. Probably longer if you used OC+ or some time release fert's in the hempy.

I love the ingenuity of growers! The solutions we come up with as a community to solve the challenges of our hobby are truly amazing. A quick browse through the DIY forums proves it! :)

Cool - thanks for chiming in on this - you're right the DIY forums here are good! I think I'd probably try the OC+ if I did it...

Once again, I have to say, your BB looks amazing! :bravo:

Thanks Mr. K - I can't seem to resist looking at her and her frostiness inspires me to get the camera out. :)

Thanks for rockin' my grow with me - we're getting close now, huh? :high-five:

Hi xlr8 :)

Man your journal goes at light speed. I was going to comment at your first set of pictures and found yet another group of pictures. That BB has me drooling.
Looks like a ski slope with all that white showing.
I think my Lucy will be harvested at the same time yours and Mr. Krip's grow does, so I'm in for the virtual smoke out!

Thanks Bluedog - I love this time of a grow. I could (sometimes do) stare at them for HOURS. :)

Thanks for the feedback on the thoughts on the hempies. I'm going to have to chew on it a while. I might have to just plant the damn things and figure something out along the way. Blazin' had a nice creative idea in a pinch, too with the 20 oz bottle and the holes. I'm traveling for sure in a couple of weeks so it can all wait until after that. I like your watering system idea - seems doable. :hmmmm:

Have a great budget idea if you don't want to do venting that may help:

DIY Odor Control Bucket

I've heard people say it really helps. Haven't tried it myself yet, though. ONA is one of the few "air freshener" sorts of stuff that seems to actually work.

Also, the Ozone JR. by CAP works, too. I think it's around $75-100 or so, but do a little reading here and other places about ozone before you go there so you know what you're getting into. Ozone may not always be good for you if you breathe in too much of it. (Don't want it too close to your plants, either). But it definitely works to knock down odor.

Best is the old fashion carbon filter. You say no venting, but could you just have a fan hooked up directly to a carbon filter pulling air through it (kinda higher budget version of the odor bucket above)? Even without the vent, it should create a negative pressure I would think and clean the air for you. That one's probably a couple hundred for a good filter/fan. If you do want to go with a venting sort of set-up, WeedNFeed seems to have it down and has promised to advise me if I need it in the future. :)

Do like I do, and employ a combination of things to make yourself as safe as possible. Hope this helps some.

:goodluck:

Morning xlr8, thanks for the ideas. I'll check out that link. I was thinking of something involving a fan and filter, it's just that the exhaust would go right back into the room. That's my issue, I really have no place good to vent to.

I didn't know you had a blueberry... and a sweet looking one at that! :bravo:

The odor control bucket works but has limitations depending on the size of the grow. I use two + the ONA breeze machine and they still get overwhelmed right before chop. I think mine work best outside the grow space in my living room behind the couch or tv. I like the ONA breeze machine better because it's whisper quiet but it's pricey @ $60 plus another $30 for a gallon jug of ONA.
ONA also has timed mister devices that work very well.
Home Depot has these odor eliminator net bags of gravel looking stuff in the cleaning supplies section. I find that they work really good for one or two plants and it's under $5. It just hangs in the area.
There's also the EvaDry mini dehumidifiers and they do a good job with odor control.

I couldn't agree more. Since I started this I've looked back at my bagseed collection and have regretted not labeling the really special ones.

I've got an eva dry mini dehumidifier and it's not doing anything for smell or humidity. These are the passive "solutions".

I'm getting an electric model for the last 2 weeks of flower. Wish the mini's did work for me...they look like they should work!

If you look at the odor control bucket idea - why couldn't someone do that with a fan pulling through a carbon filter - in the room (with no venting)? Seems like that would work to me - not ideal, but it would work wouldn't it? Without needing venting? Someone must know this. I would think the fan would pull any air in the room through the carbon filter and exhaust it "cleaned" back into the room. Just wouldn't help any with heat - but I think it would work pretty good for smell. :hmmmm:

Oh, and thanks for the Blueberry feedback! :)

Hi OMM -

You're right, it's moving crazy fast for me, too. ;) The pictures are my fault - I am both into my camera again, and into my plants again, so the result is... lotsa pics of buds!

Can't wait for the virtual smoke out! Plus I might grow a Lucy next go round, so I'm anxious to hear how she smokes, too. I've been drooling over your plants for months now! :)

I'm gonna have to check out the Home Depot gravel bag thingys. For ~ $5 seems like a no brainer. Ona definitely helps - I used to do that more, I should pick up some more. I'm of the opinion you throw it all out there so it smells like anything but weed.

Ok, well it sometimes still smells like a skunk after a whores bath, but you do your best...

nice looking plants xlr8 :bravo:

Painting away! 'cept she told me to stop "painting" for a few days so she can think over our budget. Budget smudget, Yada yada yada, bla bla bla. Let's do it I say! Patience is key though, truthfully. Make her think it's a no brainer by slow, deliberate mind control.

I have the one I think you're looking at if I remember correctly - it helps with humidity, but I'm not sure it'll help a whole lot for smell. Maybe a little. Might depend on how humid you are now. I hope it helps, though!

Oh, and thanks for the Blueberry feedback! :)

This is what I'm thinking along the lines of.

My problem is I have a poor sense of smell. Only one of my friends knows I grow and the first time he came over the first thing he said was 'Oh my God it stinks in here'. And that was in the kitchen nowhere near the grow, and I couldn't smell anything. So that freaked me out. I bought a shitload of those plug in things to make the house smell like a cherry syrup factory, but I still worry, especially with the warmer weather coming fast.

So as you can see I'll have a hard time telling if something is even working, and for that reason I want to do the very most that I can afford. Temps are not a worry, I can move the grow upstairs to the a/c if I have to.
