XLR8's BCNL Mixed Strain Hydro Grow 2011

Bandit you're the king of low-cost solutions :high-five:

This is what I'm thinking along the lines of.

My problem is I have a poor sense of smell. Only one of my friends knows I grow and the first time he came over the first thing he said was 'Oh my God it stinks in here'. And that was in the kitchen nowhere near the grow, and I couldn't smell anything. So that freaked me out. I bought a shitload of those plug in things to make the house smell like a cherry syrup factory, but I still worry, especially with the warmer weather coming fast.

So as you can see I'll have a hard time telling if something is even working, and for that reason I want to do the very most that I can afford. Temps are not a worry, I can move the grow upstairs to the a/c if I have to.

Oh man I hear you on the sense of smell - I'm super paranoid because it's the same for me. One time my wife had been out of town - she came home and the first thing she said is "do you realize our house smells like a skunk piss factory"? I'd been getting lazy about odor control a bit, and it scared me that I hadn't noticed how bad it was. Now I'm really paranoid whenever someone comes over.

I started taking walks outside, and now when I come home I really try to get a "fresh" whiff of the house. I come inside and keep walking until I get close to my plants making note of the odor along the way. Just made it a habit. The walks have really helped me keep better perspective on the smell and I've made adjustments because of it. I'm finally a bit more confident in what it's like from an outsiders perspective.

I had a neighbor (older lady) stop by the other day and she said "Your house smells so clean and fresh!" Whew, is what I thought... :)

I get pretty paranoid about the smell too. I had this guy come over to my house once and as soon as he walked in he said: "what the hell is that smell?". For the life of me I couldn't smell a thing. Ever since then I have a carbon filter installed and I've added an Ona bucket now too.

damn dude so thats blue berry hu? How was growing it? did it seem fussy or was it pretty low maintenance? Also where did you get the seeds local or from an online seed bank? Keep up the awesome work dude you get maddd respect and rep points from me homie. keep it up!

Our house smells a bit too "air freshenery" for my taste, but it's so much better than a more suspicious smell. Seems like the last 3-4 weeks of flowering is where I have to start pulling out all the stops. Carbon filter, Ona, plug in air-fresheners, Lysol timed air mister, and an Ozone jr. ozone generator - all strategically placed, etc. Smells like everything BUT weed in here now, lol.

Thanks Hydrologist! It was fussy and slow growing at the start - looked like it was genetically deformed a bit even. Had a slight hermie issue with it too, but seems to have subsided (only had a few male flowers that I picked off, and nothing recently). Eventually it came around to be a pretty damn nice looking plant I think. It was a Dutch Passion seed from an online seed bank.

I found a great seed review site that someone on here recommended (MMMMick I think) and a lot of people seem to have had the same sort of feedback with growing Blueberry - seems like it can be a challenging one to grow, but great smoke when it's done. I guess it's a notoriously slow starter, and often grows funky leaves at the start like mine did. I'm really glad I stuck with her, though, because she sure looks good now! (By the way, last I checked that cool strain review site appeared to be completely down, haven't checked lately...)

Thanks for the props brother - they're truly appreciated! You and Heks have some damn fine looking plants going, too. :thanks:

ITs like we are living the same scenes of life bro, this is the exact story from my journal for July 2008. lol... That's an exact quote... "What the hell is that smell"... nothing... that's just the smell that is produced when my butt hole puckers at light speed breaking the sound barrier, kinda fruity huh?

Its i fine line... What i find helpful is to have your exhast from the carbon filter blowing over the ono-block. Just cut a piece and put it in the air-conditioning tubing. it lastst longer and is stronger overall when you use appoximately a gram of it fresh at a time.

Then get sensi-smells for you house. its a bunch of gell smell cubes that you put into a light fixture that heats it up and smells so good. Girls love this stuff. an the idea is the same as ono but it looks like your chick is super-hip.

Then if it don't work... take your exhaust tube run it into a box that you can lightly pack with an entire box of dryer sheets. to help rid the smell from the box.

I find a new carbon filter each time and a few onoblocks and I am golden... Then it is only the smell when you harvest, and that is almost an impossible thing to eradicate. its more like a "good luck moment" when you have cut 6 plants that are all 100% there...

I find that harvest work is best done from 2:30 am to 5:00 am when the neighbors are all asleep. that is if it ins't august and every window in you neighborhood isn't open.

Also you know what cuts the fresh cut smell... CIGARS... yup while you and some friend trimm in a garage, burn a few stoggies. It has been my explanation a few times.

I had this girlfriend that didn't want me smoking, even though it was medical, so instead of breaking up with her, I just started buying and smoking cigars when i burned... (She was a college hottie, if that helps explain why i put up with her for some), anyways... I would toke then drag a few cigars puffs at the end to cover... it worked to avoid a fight.

Anyways we are in this new house I had bought in Trinidad, and we were trimming in the garage and the new neighbor stopped by to say and investigative hello... Everybody was all puckered up so I just got out my reserve emergency cigar, lite it up, and smoked 1/3 of it in like 2 seconds, then opened up the garage and said hello... anyways the neighbor ended up being cool and later confided he had no idea.

Great ideas on keeping the smell down, McCrackin - I'm gonna try placing some Ona by end of exhaust, and definitely gonna keep the Cigar thing in mind. I like a good cigar, and I usually have a few around. I might just light one up now!

Thanks for the tips! :thumb:

painting away! 'cept she told me to stop "painting" for a few days so she can think over our budget. Budget smudget, yada yada yada, bla bla bla. Let's do it i say! Patience is key though, truthfully. Make her think it's a no brainer by slow, deliberate mind control.

My wife got these warmers called Scentsy. I just change the smell every week. I have one in the living room directly above my tent in the basement and you can't smell any skunk, right now just smells like fresh made sugar cookies.

I'm gonna make the ONA bucket in Tulip's tutorial, I can get everything I need tomorrow if I get around to it. I'll let you guys know how it's working for me. I don't think there's much of an odor yet but I thought I smelled it a bit the other day. Thanks for all the suggestions and stories!

Bluedog - I'm really curious to know how well this will work for you. I'm going to watch with interest. I've heard mostly positives on this one, but haven't tried it yet myself.

I feel like this journal is getting a little aromatic! :yummy:

Hmm. Just looked 'em up online. Definitely seems like they'd help! I might check them out once I run out of air fresheners. I find that the ones that need to be heated like that work the best (for air fresheners). For me they're the last line of defense (after carbon filter, dehumidifier, ozone and ona). I just realized I'm a bit obsessive about managing scent!

Love the suggestions everybody has! :)

From Seed: Day 74 for Missy, Day 67 for Blueberry --- Day 41 of 12/12:

Moved the large (outside of box) humidifier a little bit in relation to the grow space, and RH went down to nearly 45% these past couple of days. About 47%RH tonight. I'm just really happy keeping it under 50%.

Just after lights on:

Seems like Missy's buds are noticeably swelling more each day now. The Blueberry gets frostier every time I look at it. :yummy:
