Wheelo's 3rd run - Attack of the Holy Shoots

Desirable? very! Practical? eh . . . Possible? yes. . . if you had advanced OCD or an awesome billion dollar robot.

yeah, there is definitely a saturation point also. past that more time will not equal more bud. . . i just never made it there. a good description would be that you approach a point of diminishing returns. like in the beginning you get a lot for a little, but in the end you have to do 5x the work for .3x increase in yield. . . although i'm nowhere near that this grow. so you just have to make up your mind at which point does the extra work not equal the potential gains. i think i could have vegged for another 3 weeks and pulled 40-50% more??guestimate?? but that would have put me too far behind my desired schedule.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have a good feel for the point of diminishing returns until I had a few scrogs under my belt, but I get what you're saying.

The first one will be exciting, lol.

def man, and don't worry about it, I'll be watching, and you know I can't keep my mouth shut, also i'm sure other ScrOG'ers will chime in too, so I bet you'll nail it first time out!

Awesome grow journal!

thanks a lot avond, we're just getting rolling. the major stretch should be over now.
:welcome:

ahh gooddeal..looks like you have your hands full as well as me..!! keep it rolling

lol, not quite as full as your hands bro, lol, if and when you get it all up and going at the same time, i don't know how you're going to be able to get any sleep. oh well sleep is over rated anyways. :ganjamon:

so anyways, my tent has been sitting kinda humid (~65%) so i wanted to try to solve this problem. . . the only problem is if i move the dehumidifier into the tent, it gets up over 90 when the lights are on and thats too hot for me.

so my attempt at a solution is putting the dehumidifier on a timer and running it only when the lights are off. this will keep it a bit warmer during lights out, and not add heat when the lights come on. also it should be easier to remove water from the air when its a bit cooler.

i am just waiting to see overnight temps and humidity tonight when the lights come on.

Do you think 65% is too high? I always thought my plants were stressed when I got it too much lower than that. I just try to keep good airflow.

yeah, its good for veg, but its a bit high for flower IMO.
I like anywhere between 55-70% in veg, 50-60% for flower. so i want to drop it by 10-15% at most.

it's my understanding that in late flower (last two weeks) extreme dryness will induce the plant to try to seal and protect itself with additional resin. so at this point i'll try to get it as dry as i can in there (hopefully<40%), prob wont feed at all for the final days to help. i have a long time before i have to think about this problem though. it wont be easy i think.

so, I ordered some more Silver nitrate to mix up some fresh sts. I unfroze the sts i stored from 6 months ago, and mixed up a fresh batch from that and sprayed one of the HS clones in the wheel a couple weeks ago to see if it was still viable after the deep freeze. it was not. that clone is flowering just fine right now with no effect.

i found a place that sells .25 gram increments, so i can,mix it with a half dose of sod. thio. and and make up a 4x solution. i bought two doses of silver so I can do it again later if i want. it was cheap. i will need some for my next auto run to really get a ton of seeds. plus, I am thinking of taking a break from growing again and if i do, i want to reserve the genetics I have running now. the HS is a great fallback, and currently there are no such seeds.

Wheel....so how many times have you used Silver Nitrate before? I used Gibberelic Acid with mild sucess..(it seeded one seed but i killed the plant as i didnt realise). Secondly, what kind of shops sell Silver N? Just want to know where to look.

Cheers

Hey jamal, :welcome:

I have only mixed up one cocktail so far. I used it on a Snowryder (feminized autoflower) to cross with a few other autoflower strains in my last journal.

what do you mean it seeded one seed, do you mean that the plant that you used the gib. acid turned male, and then made so little pollen that it only produced one seed on the female that you tried to pollinate with him? you killed it how? what didn't you realize?

I had a similar mild success on my first try like you (a little better though). my male produced little pollen and took longer than I expected to mature. but i had plants that were planted later than him and i would take him out of the wheel and brush him up against the other plants every other day or so to give him the best chance to inprego. them. all in all i got enough seeds that i can run another STS for them and get a real quantity and get some reserves going, so it was a success.

the most important thing is that i am pretty sure that I learned from my mistakes. the original article i used to learn this method was pretty good, but one thing it got wrong was that said that a second application of the sts a couple weeks later was optional. . . it isn't. the sts will only inhibit the plants hormones for a given amount of time and then the plant will recover, the second application two weeks after the initial dose is required to insure that the plant will be producing male signals long enough for the male sacs (anthers) to make a lot of pollen. because i opted not to do the second dose (just forgot) my male plant had a ton of male sacs but filled them with very little pollen. here look, this is late in flower. (like 10-11 weeks maybe)

i think i would want to STS the plant of choice in advance of growing the plants to pollinate and make sure i get a good amount of pollen next time.

i have a good scale so mixing up the proper potion is easy bro. plus, your gibb acid is dangerous stuff. very toxic to humans. blah. be careful my friend. sts will stain the hell out of your hands but it is not poisonous. the dry crystals of both will store in their dry state in a dark, cool, place. . . i might put them in my fridge. the bad part of sts is that it is only active for a month or so before it goes bad. . . i tried to freeze some last time to keep the silver suspended, but it was already 2 months old when i put it in. it didn't work. this time i will freeze half of it right off the bat and see if when i unfreeze it in a few months it still works. i would like to be able to store it longer because it's so potent, one batch will make 1000 doses. i'm gonna make a 1/2 batch. only 500 doses. DOH! lol. way too much. it's cheap, but why waste?

about getting them, they are not dangerous, but all chemicals must be ground shipped, so they will only ship to the USA or CANADA if you order from the USA. they are sold freely in small quantities (huge for how much you really need though) just google them, and go to shopping link at the top, and then sort by price from lowest to highest. get a couple grams from one of those stores. don't get suckered into paying more than 10 bucks for shipping, some of them ebay stores hide charges as shipping. they are both commonly used for black and white photo developing so you could always use that as a cover, but no one will ask you anyways.

i'm not sure when i'll get around to male-ing one, maybe i can sneak it in this journal a bit later. throw one or two clones into the tent. they wont pollinate in time for this harvest, but i could get the pollen ready for next time.

i've been very busy lately, and was out of town this past weekend.

unfortunately it seems like i always pull a bone head move whenever i go out out of town, this time i forgot to hook up the pump to the hose after the res change. . . went 2 full days w/o being fed. so again i let the RW get too dry, but i dont think i have as much damage as the last time in the wheel. fan leaves had to compensate for the roots though, and many yellowed. scrog is strong as usual though, which is why i decided to do it as my backup.

pics tonight when the lights come on.

thx guys, i'll show you when the lights come on later tonight. . .

I'm going out of town for thanksgiving too, maybe 4-5 days. . .the thing that worries me most is ph, it is raising steady every day about .5-.7/day.

I might have to ask my boy to stop by while im away. the only problem is the on/off time is not very convenient for him. i dont know why my pH moves so much, it didnt last grow.

maybe its the switch to AN, I noticed when I added the bloom ferts ph changed alot there after. my ajustment have been 1pt sometime. Yeah, you better holla at ya boy.

thanks guys, been in a bad mood lately, some shit goin on thats frustrating.
on top of that i had to cull three plants that weren't gonna make it. i'll show you
first here are some clones i moved to 3" cubes to get the roots expanding.
