WheelO's - 360#2 - Auto Collection galore

UPDATE:
ok, so growth was slow the first two weeks in the fridge with no nutes, then had to get used to the wheel, i still have them under 450W and 128w Flouro, but i upped the nutes to 900 ppm a few days ago and they are responding nicely.

here they are under all lights,

here they are under just flouro,

here are the new seeds that have popped, wi go in the wheel in a week or so.

since i think my SRs are about a week behind schedule from the low light and no nutes i have decided to push back the STS treatment to next weekend when the girls are closer to starting to flower

I went through all the cubes, and had to help a bunch of the sprouts slide up so that the top would pop out of the top so it can open. some of them had healthy roots, but went mushy where the stem meets the head. i lost 3 popped seedlings that way.

I guess i kept them too wet?

I'm hoping you get a reply to this, I'm curious what the Pros will say about it

WOF, sorry you lost some seeds!!! I don't think it's the RW though. I think you are drownding them. Hope you don't mind me posting this pic... not trying to brag, just showing that I've been germinating in rockwool without incident.

Just soak the cubes overnight first, then put your seeds in (so the root will come out the bottom of the seed) and put the cubes in a humidity dome and don't add water until the cubes are practically dry again. By that time, the seeds should already have sprouted. My humidity dome is a spinach container I picked up off the street while walking my dog. It works awesome.

Better luck! :rasta:

thx CMX.

I let 5 SR die when I tried to germinate them while I was out of town and put a bit too much water in the bottom of the tray. it would be a shame if i did the same to these guys too. you might be right though about the over watering, the heat has been drying them out so I've been watering them alot. i shouldn't have taken them out of the clone box yet. i think they'll go back in right now. the 3" cubes can stay under the 250W.

It was pretty hot in the tent when i got home too (90F). the two extra lights are making it more difficult to cool. i have a temporary solution for now, but i need to buy some equipment to do the job right.

pan,
i've used those before too with good results, but i was nervous about putting those into my 3" RW cube. wasnt sure if one wicked differently of retained water differently. so i just went with the RW. when my fem auto lemon skunk gets here i think i'll paper towel them like I always do. then put them in RW. or just pay closer attention. I have been super busy with work, and family problems i cant spend enough time checking them.

even if i only get one or two females of each strain (enough to get seeds) I will consider it a success.

WOF, I do seeds like Canbsmax, same with cuttings. Drop em in the hole and no pinching, fondling, manipulating or 'misting'. Wet RW starter cubes and a dome over clones till they remain standing on their own. Seedlings don't need a dome, they begin with a root. No coddling, no hugger mugger love. If it ain't sink or swim bitches, it's close. Light em up!

thanks for the advice prop,

I actually have 100% clone rate. I could clone the worst plant in the world and get good success rate.

Its been years since I started any seeds, and I usually only start a few at a time and clone the hell out of them.

Its gonna take a couple try's to get a system down pat to close to 100%. but i think cmx was right, i over watered them.

I hope i didnt kill most of them, but honestly, it's not a big deal, I can always order more. life has a different perspective the day of a funeral of a loved one.

my seeds don't mean much, they are replaceable.

thx soniq.

Ill smoke one with my dad later tonight in celebration of his life and his positive impact on ours! we will miss him, but we appreciated him while he was here, thats what counts.

appreciate the sentiment though soniq.

Hello again WOF,
I had piped in during your first turn at the wheel. I'm the guy with the VG's big brother the Omega Garden. I just wanted to make a comment on your watering/feeding. I remember during your first journal you had mentioned to me that you watered/fed your plants twice a day for 90 minutes each watering. Now please don't take this any other way other than helpful. I am now currently in my 5th week of flowering and I have never watered more than 1 a day and for only 50 minutes. In other words I only let my RW make 1 pass in the feeding tray and that is it until the next day. The RW is holding the moisture and nutrients just fine with only 1 daily feeding and only for 1 turn.

Once again my intention is not to offend but to be of some help in maximizing your yield.

Cheers,
OD

My plants totally wilted on my three time a day watering. Maybe I made them lazy by constantly feeding, maybe it's because I don't submerge the majority of the cube. I went back to running the pump full time, and since I installed the wicks, I've still not had a drip. I dunno. I'm stickin with what's workin for me.

Hey CMX,
I only submerge about the bottom 1/2" of the RW cube, and that seems to be sufficient enough. In the OG from the time the RW touches the nutes in the reservoir until it finishes takes just under 2 minutes of feeding saturation. And yet they will maintain enough moisture to last them until the next feeding 24 hours later.

Cheers,
OD

i am doing once a day for 1 1/2 hours now, and about 1/2 inch also (to the bottom divet on the cube holders.) I don't think my twice a day schedule was bad for them, but i just don't think its necessary. I want to see what happens if I let them dry out more. i dont think they get TOO dry for a couple few days w/o watering.

OD,
I welcome advice from other growers (esp. rotational growers)!! thanks for offering advice.

I am self admittedly no expert on rotational growing, RW growing, or even Hydropnic growing for that matter.

My bread and butter was dirt. long long time i excelled in dirt. sometimes I want to go back to it because I was good at it. much better than I am at hydro. I grew dwc with ok results, not as good as dirt. now im trying my hand at this volks. i like it, there is def a large light distribution advantage over other systems. not sure about any hormone change advantages, but I had other limiting factors, so I can't come to a clear conclusion on that yet.

please feel free to comment anytime.
WOF
:thankyou:

Makes sense. You've essentially got a sea of green which, when wrapped into a cylinder, further limits individual plant sizes. The amount of transpiration per plant is probably low and therefore the moisture in the RW cubes is adequate.
