Yeah we have been putting off ordering them. But we were going to get some V2's too!
That's crazy that the border won't let them through. I know that they're not allowed to sell the nicotine in Canada, but didn't think it would be a problem ordering them from the states.

Are they at least going to let them through if you pay a heavy duty?

I'm considering trying to add some porta scrogs to my current grow. I'm still in veg, so it's not too late. My hesitation is the amount of work and the difficulty of finding the cages this time of year. I've looked for soem cages in a few garden centers without success. All the nurseries shut down in the winter here. I'm growing from seed, so I know some of my plants will be males. Since I don't know how many females I will end up flowering out, I'm unsure how big my little scrogs can be or how many I will need. I don't really want to build extras that end up being for males.
I've been tieing them down manually so far. I'm having flashbacks to previous grows. I already went through this progression, and I ended up putting in a screen last time. I think I sort of forgot that, when I switched to buckets back in the 90's, I stopped training the plants. All I know is this is a crazy amount of work. I know a screen would be easier in some ways, but I have concerns about how well 20+ porta scrogs would work in one space.
Anyway, I'm enjoying following along with your progress. I'm still intrigued by the porta scrog idea. Ultimately, I'm planning to run this room as a SOG, so maybe I should just suck it up through a couple grows until I have mothers that can provide clones.

s.o.l bro, health canada is to blame, some bs about them not beeing healthy or something lol...they dont want us smoking e-cigs because big tabacco pays they're paychecks thats all thats about imo...the only way to gt them from the states is to order tips with no nicotine in them, total bs ita ok to smoke real cigs that they tax the shit out of but not healthy cigs that they dont!!

Thanks Jon. I'm in WA, US. I live in a small town. I checked our walmart, but they have little in the garden area this time of year. I also looked at Home Depot when we were last "in town". I can't recall if I checked Lowes. Unfortunately, 'town' is about 2 hours away. We don't have another trip down there planned right now. I know I need a couple things from the hydro shop, but I won't need them for a few weeks. By then, it will be too late to add the screens.

Hey hiker,
hmmmmm.. And you hydro store doesn't sell the cages?? I'm sure you'll be able to find some somewhere if you keep looking.
I'd say wait until you know for sure how many ladies you'll have to play with, and then start thinking about building your porta scrogs.
I think 20+ porta scrogs would work better than one huge screen over the whole canopy. Easier to maintain, move, feed etc. It kind of depends too, on how you plan to train them.
Maybe just do a grow using just the tomato cages first, not scrogged.
You'd be surprised at how well they work for support and to tie to.
Then once you done a one or two grows you'll have found some good mothers to donate to a porta scrog, or scrog grow.
Searching for a good mother, is definitely a good place to start..

LOL I bet the hydro store does have them! I try not to buy things there when I know I can get them elsewhere. The hydro shop tends to be more expensive on just about everything. They give me a "good customer" discount. That helps, but I'm still in the mindset of trying to find things somewhere else first. Thanks for making me say "Duh!".
I'm only training bushes for this grow and one more after this. It's a brand new grow room, so everything is from seed. I'll be selecting mothers from this batch. They won't be big enough to provide clones in time for the batch after this one, so I'm planning a second batch of seeds. Maybe... I might just take extra clones from this batch and try to stunt them long enough to wait for the flowering room to open up. Eventually, I will be doing a SOG to make it easier and reduce the time between harvests. The timing is all messed up while I get everything started.

I can't speak of the life of the bulb yet, but I will keep taking lux readings throughout the grow to see how long they stay strong, how the bulb degrades, etc.

I'd recommend trying the Light EnerG Super HPS 1000 watt bulb.
It's only about 40 bucks, great for flowering and vegging..
gives 136,000 lumens too.
But if you can manage to save up the extra 60 bucks, having an EYE in your light will really make your buds happy..

Old, make your own from Home Depot, with hardware mesh, chicken wire, or gate stuff. They have lots to choose from with different sized holes.
