I was just reading an article on how to prevent fungus/bud rot/ pm by Ed Rosenthal and he was saying to add Silica to your plants. I thought
youād appreciate hearing that. CL
.
I have not (yet) red his books Ed Rosenthal. But I guess he knows what he talking about, heard his name around here several times. Big Horticulture specialist just for that what ever he says resonates with me.
I think Silica is there with Calcium and magnesium, underrated and overlooked secondary nutrients. I wouldnāt even place them as micro elements.
If I could restructure the food chain for cannabis I would put it NPK primary - Cal/Magnesium/Silica secondary. I would think that if we hit these elements, for the lifespan of the plant we would have less chance of problems.
Last year I had a Cal/Mag issue, this year no issues. Donāt even use Neem anymore. But I have up the dose of Horsetail my Silica input. Every month I have harvested a pound of fresh horsetail and added to my liquid compost/green manure/tea.
I have noticed that the brown/dark Color of the horsetail tea, I see it again when I break the stems and the plant sap comes out dark blue or āpurpleā. I have the intuition that I see it in the stems because thatās where the plant uses the Silica for cell wall repair and cell division. I subdivide every nutrient for every part of the plant it enhances or serves the purpose for.
Nitrogen - foliage and green for photosynthesis
P-K - roots and flower/fruit feed
Cal/Mag/Silica - cell division, stem cells, cell wall repair, over all plant structure and branching. Positive Impact on plant immune system.
I donāt worry about the rest. Boron, sulphur, ironā¦
I didnāt say anything new, we all know what the plant needs basically but we donāt seem to understand how and when to apply these nutrients. I found foliar feeding is the most fast and by far most effective way to force feed any nutrient. The stomata is the mouth of the foliage, if properly used the plant take in seconds what ever you feed them.
I know indoors in a tent we canāt foliar because of the RH, equipment canāt get wetā¦ and what ever other reason. But I would highly suggest to foliar right before lights on, the stomata will be open and ready, they start to close at high temperatures and low RH, to preserve liquid inside the plant.
I was reminded last year about the importance of Silica several times, now itās there with me every time. Itās so abundant horsetail.
How do you supply Silica to your medium? And whatās the dose?
