Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm Makes 3 - Perpetual 2000w

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

OK, so I just got off the phone with CAP. They had a guy working for them that was installing the valves on the propane CO2 generators backwards. Once the flow affects the valve it is broken permanently. It will leave the burners running even when the power is off to the unit. They immediately knew what I was talking about and very quickly and friendly have bent over backwards to get me a new unit with $0 cost to me in shipping or anything else.

I also learned that very white leaves is the symptom they look for to determine excessive co2. I do in fact have some white leaves.

"Moving to Montana soon, gonna be a dental floss tycoon" lol Montana is looking lovely so is everyone else.

Keep it growing:reading420magazine:

LOL - is that Zappa? I haven't heard that in a long time. Can't remember if its Joe's Garage, Babysnakes, or Sheik Yerbouti.

Yummy looking pics papa, I still can't get over that scrog - awesome. Looks to be one heck of a harvest!

Thanks, bro. Its a trip every time I look at it. I am really dying to harvest everything but the Utopia. I really wish I could get a pic right now that would capture the largest UH in there. Its an amazing plant. Soon she will be visible.

Whoa Papa Green, nice thread!

Just hopped on from Irishboy and checked out your opening page.....wow.

And even tho I haven't read past the intro and I'm not/can't go into HPS style gardening (LEDs for me), I can't help but think theres gold in these pages.

So make room for me cause I'm a cherry to artificial lighting (180w LED inbound/tanks Mike@GLH) and hungry to learn.

Hele on Papa Green! :nicethread:

I gots some catch up reading. Peace :peace:

Right on, bro! Welcome aboard! Lights are just lights. Irishboy, SS, Mike and others have demonstrated the viability of LEDs. I'm a believer. A poor believer, so I've not been able to invest yet, but a believer.

What's been key in their grows I think is not so much the lights, but the great overall knowledge they have of their plants and growing. The lights are necessary, but there's no substitute for experience.

The more people in a thread - the more great experiences to be shared. So thanks for making it over here and I'm sure we'll trade many a tip.

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

huh, that sucks about the generator man. It's not the first time that has happened either. Back when CAP started out I remember some issues with the same thing. I would think it's a contributing factor, but not the sole cause of the leaves. I had the same problem on a Rhino, and my last Cindy and I believe it was high temps contributing to light burn. I raised the light, and wala! then again, in the co-op grow, i believe it was a slight nutrient deficiency that wasn't enough to show up until the leaves matured, then they browned like that a couple weeks later. Hmmmmm. I gotta say though, that montana looks to be crystal heaven. yummy yummy!!

Science of TLC

Hi all-

This has little to do with what we've been talking about, but its going up here anyways.

I have been getting together a list of ways that TLC really does help your plants.

In other words, we've all read and heard that the #1 thing you can do for your plants is daily TLC (Tender Luvin' Care). I am putting together a list of things backed up by a little science and math that sorta quantify this.

For example, CO2. Every breath you breathe out has about 2000-2500ppm CO2. Even in my large space, if I spend more than about 15 minutes in there the ppm goes up about 50ppm. If I stand under the meter it will read over 1000ppm very quickly. If I blow directly on it it will go above 2000ppm after about 10 breaths.

So there's an example of TLC - doing nothing but standing in the room and luvin on the plants - will really help them.

If anyone has any other examples like this I'm gonna do a list and put it in the right place.

Big Mahalos for the welcome!

Glad I found 420. Everybody (ok mostly) is cool and likes to share. I like this world.

Yeah I'm hoping that some of my sunshine grows carries me indoors. I chose LED for heat control.

Man you cover some prime grow issues and I'm just getting started on your thread. Good thing I got free time this weekend.

I'll holler back once caught up. :)

+Reps if I can

I couldn't have phrased it better. You're spot on with both diagnoses. They definitely have been heat stressed. And they definitely had deficiencies that are only now really showing. Not trying to make excuses, and in fact let me give a list of the things I did wrong.

Moving into this space without interrupting my growing cycles too much was a bitch. I opted not to miss a cycle of grow. I am not sure yet whether the yield has suffered so much that I coulda done better by shutting down for 3 weeks to set it up.

There were lots of small details that I accounted for in the old sub, that suffered during the move. Basically I couldn't afford to set up 2 veg rooms and 2 flower rooms completely. I had to favor the old room or new one. As plants moved into their spaces, I moved the appropriate gear with them. But there were gotchas of course. The biggest being my A/C took a dive.

Also, the propane CO2 is new. I knew it was gonna put off heat, but I couldn't get a straight answer anywhere about the BTUs of heat. BTW the answer is YES - however many BTUs your CO2 gen is rated - it IS adding that many BTUs of heat directly into the room. In my case its rated at 22,000BTUs and it has to run about 3 minutes on - 5 minutes off to keep the room at 1500ppm. So its injecting about 10-12K BTU of heat. I was braced for that with my mini-split A/C rated at 18K and my Portable A/C at 14K.

What I was not braced for was the Veg room needing its own A/C. If I vent it - it will never get any cooler than the ambient coming in. And since its effectively inside the flower room - it needs its own A/C. In my original designs both in the origianl sub, and the drawings I did for this room, I had actually sectioned the rooms differently and it woulda been fine. But then during setup, I had to make changes because some $ I thought I would have wasn't there, and some help I thought I was gonna have wasn't there. So I had to build and hang lots of stuff by myself. And I had to scramble to do things at all instead of doing them right.

Originally I had planned for about another $2500 worth of budget. Basically all the things that have been a prob - wouldn't have been. Reservoir chiller. Light Rail 5 instead of 3.5. Real 50G reservoirs instead of trash cans. Another 3x6 Tray. 220 Power distro unit. Another 10K A/C. And two more 1K lights.

And enough $ to afford to change the reservoirs more often. That's a hidden cost that I think folks gloss over. We all know nutes can be expensive. But when they get so expensive that I have to debate whether to just dump a res - that's really bad. The health of the plants should be a no brainer. Yet with these grows, every time I fill the res its $50-75. I HATE that I have compromised on the number of res changes to offset this. I used to change the res every two weeks. On these grows they're lucky if they get it every 5 weeks.

5 weeks between changes in this type of hydro, with the CO2 going up and down, the temps going up and down, the res temps staying above 70, 5 different strains, Indicas and Sativas, etc...

Its great for making me see EVERY FRIGGING TYPE OF STRESS the plants can take, but for fucks sake I am over it. I was laughing about it with a buddy of mine who's a great gardener - does residential landscaping and gardening professionally since the mid 80s. He had a great line, I can't remember who he quoted, but the quote was:

"The best gardeners have killed the most plants."

And on that note, I'll wrap this one up.

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

Hi my friend Papa Green:ganjamon:
Thanks for the nice plug.:)

I just read your what I would call your "Stress and Shoulda" list. What a list!
Too much CO2 makes white leaves? Thanks for that info, not that I've ever used it, but good to know.
So, at the end of this cycle, if money permits, are you going to stop for a while and redo things again? Sounds plausible. You have a mind that runs 100 mph, so what are you thinking of? Your still gonna have a hell of a harvest. Just wondering. Is there a Sub 3 coming? Wish I was closer, I would gladly help. :grinjoint:

Is it just me or do you see lots of folks struggling with the onslaught summer?
Many. many heat problems this year an lots of frustration in journals. Like someone turned on a switch. :smokin2:

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

And despite the stresses they are still producing beautiful buds. That's impressive. When my AC went, I had a plant that just went insane. I'm impressed by how good yours look. :bravo:

:peace:

Thanks! I think the most important thing I did right was keep the pH in line. I let it drift a little from the optimal on purpose, but all in all, I think I caught any issues within a day. Also, I've used these nutes enough to know what NOT to do, and when there were weird readings on my meters I was able to spot things a little quicker. So aside from chasing the N def at the beginning and the P def in flower - they were basically on auto pilot. Res temps have sucked though.

:thankyou::peace:

Hiya. You earned the plug!

Yeah - its going through my head what to do in a week or two. 2/3 of the plants will be cleared out, but I have new ones waiting. I want to work on making it easier to drain the res. or flush the soil plants. And I wanna upgrade the electric to accommodate more lights. Another light mover would be good. Res chiller. I may actually re-section the room with 3 smaller flower areas. TBD. There's about 87 other small upgrades to be done.

As far as the heat, I'm sure there's an onslaught of these issues every year. Its bound to happen when you got a bunch of folks like me pinching pennies. And the problem is the A/C issues don't really surface UNTIL it gets hot. I tested my unit for a week before moving the plants in there. All was good. Outside temps were only in the 70s and 80s. Then we had two 90+ days back to back and rain. When the temps were lower, the lack of coolant wasn't a problem, the system could cool itself and inside it felt right. But when the outside temps got higher, the system had to rely on the freon gas and there was a leak. Bing - the whole thing went to shit for a few days. Luckily the room is well insulated and I had the other a/c and I moved all the other heat sources out. So it never got above 83 ambient in the room - even with the CO2 at 1000ppm. But it was undoubtedly a few degrees hotter under the scrog light.

Anyways - vooof that was a long reply. Tired and baked and no food lately - gotta get breakfast.

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

Mini Update:

All seems good in the sub. Gotta start final flush. The pro-mix ones have been on plain water for 8 days, and they're finishing fast. Its prolly redundant and semi-unnecessary, but I like to be sure if possible. The worst that will happen is they take an extra few days to dry.

The others have been on light nutes, and they need a flush. Then they will get plain water for the remainder of their lives, so I can chop them whenever.

The UH are the only ones still getting nutes, and theirs will be cut back drastically this feeding.

I took a bunch of pics - coming up soon.

Montana

Final Flush. Not gonna be a huge yielder, but that's ok. If she smokes half as good as she looks I'll be fine with that. Her 4 clones took off and look great. All very similar. With a little practice I bet I can get her much fatter. The cola is about 8 inches long and about 2" wide.

Scrog

The scrog is just crazy. If I ever find myself in this position again I will trellis or scrog the second layer as soon as I see it. I am fighting to keep buds from touching each other. There's strings and wires cris-crossing the scrog that are hard to see. They are holding up the buds.

I have been pretty meticulous about making sure there was sufficient airflow through the whole thing so there's no signs of rot, but I have to admit I'm worried every time the lights come on.

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

Papa when you say "TLC" is bending in that area. It to me is a simple way to get alittle "closer" to the plant. I always include a "bent" plant just to see what ways I can get it to grow. it is a great way to really spend more upclose time with these things we are growing...if you HAVE the extra time.

I have had a few outdoor grows in the past (small) that have "worked" and had a nice fence that allowed me to warp some interesting looking plants.

im sure if there can be a few growers that have 4 plants would bend 2 plants the same way.....
theres some getto science in there somewhere...gl and lookin good:nicethread:

That's a great point. A little touching and bending is good in many ways.

I was just thinking in terms of basically if you stand in the room or at your closet door and even just LOOK at your plants and Breathe.

Other examples on my list were things like catching a broken piece of gear.

Learning to spot def earlier. Train the eye, Etc.. But I think we should definitely include playing with the plants in TLC.

+Reps, adding that to my list.

Re: Papa Green's Utopian Sub v2 - You, Me, and Barney's Farm makes 3 - Perpetual 2000

Hi PG! Thanx for the reps man. You didn't need to do that man. Anyways, my nugs actually came out good even with the crispies, I bet yours will do the same since they're soo close anyways. I'll will them into Danky goodness for you.

....about the TLC, I'll go in there and just re-arrange any leaves that get bunched together, and bend down any leaves that are covering lower buds, and even occasionally crimp them out of the way. I think my plants love to heve theire leaves arranged more efficiently. And yes, I breathe alot on them too. lol, Even let them listen to alot of music. Some say that the harmonic vibration will increase cell division. Sometimes I swear they're singing along.
