UncleC's Ganja Grove - Organic Soil - LED - SOG - La Chocolat/Vanilla Kush/LSD/GSC

Re: UncleC's Ganja Grove - Organic Soil - LED - SOG - La Chocolat/Vanilla Kush/LSD/GS

Cheers and reps, UnkyH..
Sorry too lazy to search myself this morning; we had father/sister in law around for fathers day here.. Trying to sneak posts in..
I'm glad to see you going by eye and feel.. I get it and usually halve what I WANT to put in so as not to over-do.. I don't have quite the availability of amendments available here but I do what I can.. I save my eggshells (dried on left over bbq heat) and grind them to powder for example; finally found a good rock dust and EWC source; have only dolomite lime; and allegedly 'organic' granular guano (phos) along with good organic growth and bloom ferts.. I just mix a little bit of each with my own compost, add lots of coco (expanded in good qual. seaweed solution). I worry about the perlite only cos it'll pretty much be there forever; I also feel I have to rinse it first cos it's so dusty. Finally found a brew shop that does rice hulls, just been a bit busy/lazy to actually go get them.. :smokin2:
The point is I guess thanks for the info. And Sue is awesome too. Gleaning tidbits from a variety of methods is my chosen method, and thanks to you Unk I feel I'm on the right path...
Thanks again!

I'll share this here because I know you'll get a good laugh over it. I've been sitting here on the floor for three hours straight running through the yards and trying to catch up. That convoluted grow of mine takes lots of coordination and planning time. :laughtwo: Anyhow, I just looked over and realized that three hours ago I loaded the pipe, but I've been so involved with the community that I completely forgot that I grow it to smoke it.

It's not often that I get so distracted that I forget to take hits from a loaded pipe.
In my case it's usually the other way around. It's usually the loaded pipe that causes me to become distracted.

UncleC, the following is from Cannbelle's journal:
"As for paths, one of my favorite Zen masters, Ikkyu Shojun once wrote:
Many paths lead to the top of the mountain,
But at its peak, we all share the same bright moon."

It is too bad that some cannot seem to understand that diversity is so very important in life and gardening.
Keep it Green.

I really dig that Happy Hemper. Thanks for sharing.
:circle-of-love:

My sentiments exactly!!
In my view it doesn't matter what method one chooses to grow their personal use herbs so long as they are enjoying the experience.
There are many paths to the mountain top that's for sure.
:high-five:

I like your approach Santb. Reading your description of the trouble you have finding soil making ingredients was like someone pulling the words directly from my mouth.
Back when I was first getting my shovel dirty there wasn't much information out there about growing MJ nor were there any super soil recipes or FFOF or whatever. Gardeners made their own soil mixes back in those days using only whatever basic ingredients were available. This is how most folks my age and older learned to garden, by making our own soil mixes.

FFWD to today and I now live in a somewhat remote location that does not have a real grow store anywhere nearby where I can go to purchase what most folks would consider necessary ingredients to build an organic soil. It's like 1985 all over again!!
:helpsmilie:
In fact, the nearest grow shop that would bear the slightest similarity to what most folks would think of when thinking of a grow store is over 1,000 miles or more from where I'm located.

So same as you, finding ingredients is not an easy task where I'm located which is why you'll never see much if any fancy product names listed in any of my post.
It took me lots of searching around to find many of the ingredients that I use in my mix. On the other hand, other ingredients that may be difficult for some others to get are easy pickings for me because of my location.

Having all of the exact ingredients listed on some list is not really all that important when building a good soil.
The key is to do some research and understand what each ingredient brings to the table and how it may benefit the soil and the plant that you are attempting to grow.
Once you do a bit of homework and are able to truly understand what each ingredient brings the table and why it is useful you can then easily substitute ingredients as needed and get the same or similar outcome from your grow.
This to me is what makes organic gardening fun and enjoyable.

It's now 14 days since flip and the girls are really filling in nicely and pistils are now showing up in full force. It's game on now folks!!
:yahoo::slide:

The girls have not been requiring much attention other than being given a sip of water here and there. And boy are they drinking!! I think they have a case of cotton mouth....

Today I decided to remove the few flag leaves near the base of each plant that were touching the soil along with doing some light flag leaf defoliation to open up the centers in order to improve air circulation.

Pics before defoliation.

Re: UncleC's Ganja Grove - Organic Soil - LED - SOG - La Chocolat/Vanilla Kush/LSD/GS

You hit the nail on the head with that explanation UncleC :thumb:

It's a good thing that I learned to garden the old fashioned way otherwise I'd really be screwed.
I'd get some really confused looks if I went around here asking for FFOF or Roots Organic or BioBiz or any of that stuff.
I already get blank stares just asking for dolomite lime. LOL!!

Thanks again.. Yeah, that is basically my approach also. I'm not as remote as you. Plenty of garden centres and hardware "warehouses" around but they all sell the same stuff.. only the price varies. The seemingly endless list of organic amendments available in the States just doesn't exist here. Which is why I've decided to cheat (KISS) a bit and use pelletised organic ferts ("Rocket Fuel" and "Ka-Bloom")by an Australian company called Neutrog. Comes highly recommended here and made from brewing various manures, kelp etc... I powder the pellets in a mortar and pestle, then add a tablespoon here and there when mixing to cover my bases.. Pellets used on rest of garden as instructed...
I had to drive an hour to get my rock dust; time will tell if it is worth the price and effort but I will be recycling my pot soil as well as using it in no-till vege-patches with gypsum so definitely a long-term solution (again, thanks 420, esp. Doc Bud for making me aware of High Brix/soil mineralization). I add pinches of guano phos, epsom salt, seaweed, myco, dolomite, gypsum, eggshells, coffee grounds and EWC and that's about it; trying to keep it simple as possible.
My own compost first batch is a year old now so def getting that "humus" feel/smell... Rice hulls will definately be added soon to mixes. After that I just water with tea every other week or so.. I can't quite get my head around no-till pots ala Sweet Sue (I'm way too hyper and can't stop fiddling so just leaving the pots alone is not an option!) so will be recycling so as not to waste too many ferts; hoping to get to the stage where I no longer need to pre-mix pot soil, and only need to boost with some EWC/teas and maybe a dash of the Neutrog products.
God, this is a good site. At the risk of brown-nosing again, those of you I regularly stalk were chosen carefully; organic MJ gardening advice is obviously also easily applied to other flowering/fruiting plants So I am stoked to have found this site.
Cheers Unk and Everyone!

Ha ha this always reminds me of the time I wandered to a corner store in the middle of the night for some munchies and the punk at the counter said-
"Perhaps you would you like some bandaids for your eyes as well, sir?"
...Yeah thanks a lot buddy that'd be great.

Re: UncleC's Ganja Grove - Organic Soil - LED - SOG - La Chocolat/Vanilla Kush/LSD/GS

Keep on doing what you're doing Santb.

Sounds to me like you're already having fun and blazing your own path based on the knowledge that you've gained.
That's what gardening is all about man.

Thanks for the laugh Weaselcracker. I think he was just jealous that your eyes were more bloodshot than his was.

Way back when during my senior year of high school me and one of my good friends stopped at a grocery store to pick up some munchies and a pack of rolling papers. When we entered the store I noticed that the cashier was an acquaintance of my mother so I asked my friend to get the papers and I would buy the munchies and meet him in the car.
The thought was that if we didn't check out together then he would just be some guy that I bumped into at the store. Wasn't me buying rolling papers mom.....

While waiting in line to buy the munchies (my buddy was about 2 people ahead of me) my buddy approaches the register and asked my mothers friend for a pack of Zig Zag's and a lighter.
She reaches behind the counter, grabs a pack of papers and a lighter, does her thing with the cash register, then tells my buddy the total.
As he is paying her she asked if he'd like a bag to go with that. He then proceeds to pat his front pocket with his hand and tells her, "no mam, I already have a bag. I just needed some papers and a lighter" then walks away.

All I could do was turn around, return the munchies to where I had found them, and attempt to sneak out of the store without being seen.
There was no way that I could look that lady in the eyes while buying Doritos and Oreo's without laughing at her after that little episode.

Yeah...my buddy can be an idiot and a prankster sometimes. I guess that's why we always got along so well. LOL!
