TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Yes these gnats damage the root system as well but I think they're quite easy to get rid of. Of course avoid over-watering but that might be hard in coco? I hear 'mosquito bits' are also very effective against them, you just sprinkle it over the medium before watering.

Hey blaze just had a catch up :) looking awesome! I've been battling fungus gnatt for a while now, they eat dead root matter and this inturn can spread root rot. I haven't noticed any detrimental affect on any of my plants. I've been using gnatt off and sticky traps with great results :) any natural remedy should have bacillus thuringirnsis var. israelensis :) heres a great link Fungus Gnat Management and Control
Also general hydroponics do a product called Azamax which is neem based insecticide which has great results too much love brother :circle-of-love::Namaste::passitleft:

Yeah, you can't let coco dry out too much otherwise you get a salt build up and then pH problems. I'm not too worried though. Haven't seen any more and the plants are thriving.

Thanks OGman will definitely check out that link bud.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

What's bugging me a bit is the footprint that 600w is putting off and the need for 2 x 150w. Extra lumens are also good but it's important to get the most out of what you have , late flower those 2 x 150w will come in very handy but I would maybe think about upgrading to a better reflector than a simple birdwing. Birdwings are OK but in my opnion they are not very good at putting the lumens down to the ladies.
Just my 2 cents

Cheers

I hear you bud. I didn't realise birdwings were so kak. When I purchase the 2 x 1000w HPS units in a few months, I will go cooled hoods as you suggested. Then the 600 will be used just for vegging plants. Those cooled hoods are expensive though.

I've been a neem user since dirt was new. Didn't know it was protecting me from fungus gnats. Nice little bonus.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Mosquito bits and/or dunks (bacillus thuringirnsis var. israelensis) are an organic bacteria the fungus gnats feed on that makes them quit eating but it only lasts 2 days. You can decimate a population by using it every other day by mixing them in water and drenching your soil (3-4) times. Personally, I prefer neem cakes and DE as part of my soil mix. This way, the infestation never happens. :thumb::circle-of-love::thumb:

Bare bulb. If your get 2, 1000 watt dial a watt system you can start with 400w or 600w or a mix to see how hot it's running. 400w BB puts out low heat.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Thanks Doc Cannabi. Will have to make the effort to find some then. :thumb:

Doc Bob... Thanks man! Although not sure about the fastest. Have you seen Mono's 12/12 journal? Those girls are on a mission.

Yes I have. But that's Mono's Mojo.

We should have a race! Same beans and same size container. First one to 1' wins! I think you would be right there neck and neck man!

Oh and when it comes to HPS/MH, air cooled hoods for the win.

:Namaste:
Bob

Just hang a single CFL 6' above the plant lol. 1 foot in 1 week lol. But I think that's missing your point dr . Couldn't help myself. :circle-of-love:

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Thanks for all the replies and the genuine interest in helping me sort my problems out.

The plants haven't been watered in 36 hrs now, and that is as long as I dare go, as they are drooping already. Hopefully that dried out the substrate a bit. Will give them plain water just now. Don't want to add more salts to a medium that is probably too rich in salts right now.

Haven't seen a gnat in 3 days now. I'm going to take that as a sign that they are either gone, or there are too few of them to cause issues. In the meantime, I will track down some DE and look into the BTi bacteria as well.

Thanks again guys!

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Not a good idea to run bare 1000w bulbs in south africa in the summer months , gets way to hot . I have tried lol
I just had that talk with Blaze. My last grow was cooltube but bare bulb is pre flowering in 7 days from switch, cooltube took almost 19 days to start pre flowers. Now it was a 600 watt in a cooltube and I'm using 1000 watt at 1050 bare bulb. Big difference in a 4x4 tent.

Cheers

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Instead of using a cool tube which is a bit of a waste I think, can you not just place a 16" or 12" fan towards the bulb? that will really cool the heat down.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

I have a big fan that runs in the tent blowing air between the light and the plants. Maybe I should bend the wings of the reflector to give a bigger foot print.

UPDATE

Day 33 from seed. 1 week left to flip!

Before I carry on with the update, I just want to chat about the Black Rhino from my previous grow. Those that followed that grow, know that I struggled with that plant from start to finish. She was a real bitch. Only thing she had going for her, was a stench like nothing I've ever smelled before and a forest of trichs that actually made the plant feel a bit damp. In the end she yielded less than half the other plants. It would almost have been worth it, if she was as powerful a smoke as her smell and trich production promised. She wasn't. She was the least potent of the 3. As a result, she has been sitting in her jar pretty much left alone. I think it has been curing in the jar for about 5 or 6 weeks now. I smoked some again for the first time a few days ago. F#cken hell! Potency has tripled. The smell and taste is phenomenal and the high is nothing short of perfect. A strong body stone, but my mind is still relatively clear. Take an extra rip of the bong, and it will start messing with visuals. Making everything brighter and increasing contrast. It is easily my favourite smoke now. This has been such a strange plant to work with. She does her own thing and doesn't stick to the plan at all. If she was an easier plant to grow and yielded a little better, then this would be my all time favourite. Such a powerful high, but somehow still very forgiving. No anxiety, even if the body buzz makes you feel like you are vibrating. Excellent, excellent smoke.

Anyway, on to the current grow...

Plants are getting quite big now. I would normally flip them at this size, but Grizz and I agreed on 40 days so there is a whole week for them to pack on some size. I will defoliate tonight to open them up a bit.

The shorter pheno of E. Kush is the only plant putting out a proper smell, and what a great smell as well. A deep coffee liqueur smell. I had to tie down the tops of the taller E. Kush. She was getting too close to the light. This was one of the 3 plants that I topped as well. Didn't really slow down her stretch much. As a result of tying her down, a third top has come up between the 2 bent down tops. It looks pretty cool. I will keep that going.

Exodus Kush, with a third top coming up between the 2 tops. See if you can spot it.

Absolutely killing it Blaze... Awesome man... Week to go, my little ones need it.. Black dream I could flip at anytime... Thanks for the black rhino report. Sounds awesome. I might have to look out for it....

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Don't bother bud. The genetics seemed very unstable, and I doubt you would get the same pheno. Maybe that's a good thing though. LOL. I would rather shoot for something like Lost Coast OG, because I'm convinced the black rhino I grew expressed more OG Kush genetics.
