The Joy Of Growing - SweetSue Goes Perpetual

How thrilled am I that I could get you excited for your own harvest. This will be your first, won't it? Nothing like the first, so treat it with the joyful respect it deserves and make sure you have lots of time to enjoy.

I don't trim off anything other than necrotic leaves. I wash everything else, since I save the trim for future hash making or butter making or..... You get the picture. Anyway, I want everything washed, so it all stays on. I trim after the wash. I always plan to simply take the bigger fans off and let it hang before I get the rest, but I love trimming so much that I always end up standing there and getting them all down to where I want them. :laughtwo:

PeeJay has me trimming in a completely different mode than I used to. I was much more casual about it the first few times through. I wonder sometimes if he fully appreciates how much he affects us with his tendency towards perfection. Between him and Graytail I can't believe I'm not so intimidated that I crawl under a rock somewhere. LOL!

I try to leave anything with decent sugar on. Doc Bud has mentioned more than once that he believes the trichomes on the sugar leaves may be stronger than those on the buds. The little sugar leaves look so beautiful when they dry curled protectively around the buds. I just love that look. These two plants didn't have many of those leaves and I got a bit carried away this morning. I could blame that on PeeJay, couldn't I? *giggle*

Doc has been insistent lately that there's no reason for anything other than room-temperature water for the wash. I set these up before going to bed last night and I'm so thankful for this modification you wouldn't believe it. Hahaha! The first one is the one with baking powder and lemon - I guess at my amounts, but I know from experience with 5 gallon buckets what the consistency of the wash water should be.

You have the rest of it down. Doc recommends they not go directly into darkness. His contention is that photosynthesis continues for a time following harvest, so let that process continue by keeping some type of light available for at least the day of harvest. It certainly doesn't hurt to follow that directive, and if he's right you help the dry and cure along by doing so.

I started weighing mine every morning. When they stop changing I jar them up. In my hall that usually takes 3-4 days.

When are you thinking on your harvest? I'll set an alert on my calander so I don't miss it. I keep missing everyone's harvests and that simply can't continue. :laughtwo:

Of all the stuff I grow, wash, jar, etc. Of all that what do I PERSONALLY smoke? Sugar leaf trim about 90% of the time.

I can smoke any bud I like...like these:

But I don't other than a snap in the Mobius for my own terpene tests. No, I trim the washed sugar leaves off those buds and roll joints. It's the best part of the harvest, IMO. The Filet Mignon.

People who are first introduced to my produce do so via hits of a sugar leaf joint. It's my calling card, my advertising...a statement of passion and evidence of a pursuit of excellence.

People are free to have the flowers, but I save the sugar leaf for my loved ones and me.

Okay, Sue and Doc Bud -- so much amazing information in these two very generous replies! Thank you so much! I don't know when harvest will be -- I've got a digital microscope in the mail (I think today!) so will be able to get some good trichome shots and with those and community advice and my own sense of when the plant is ripe ... well, I still don't know :) Not too long, I don't think.

Doc Bud: that makes real sense. As the buds have been developing trichomes, I notice how absolutely delicious the sugar leaves look. I want a fair amount of trim for making canna butter, but maybe I'll keep it to popcorn buds (of which I will have an embarrassment, I'm afraid, since the plants are still pretty jungle-y) and vape my filet mignon!

Anyway, sorry to hijack your thread, Sue -- but thank you so much for your kindness!

OK mister, you gave me chills, that was so inspirational. I'm going to take a much closer look at growing better sugar leaves.

I always made sure to include a fair ratio in the bowl, but you have me thinking now Doc. Most of mine will always be edibles, but that doesn't matter. Those brownies I made with the 14 grams of my first harvest was almost entirely sugar leaves, come to think of it.

Doc, do you trim wet or dry?

This is so not possible. If you hadn't asked we wouldn't have heard it confirmed by Doc himself.

Susan, :slide: party for harvest!!!

Happy for you, Love!

+reps for another outstandingly delicious harvest!

Thank you Dear. :hugs:  What's not to love about a harvest day? It just brings a steady stream of smiles to the day. I hope your day is going well. Here - a booster hug. :hugs:

You're welcome. My pleasure. It's kinda out of my control guys. It pours out of me on its own. Gives me pause sometimes, to be honest.

Good afternoon Sue :) after our discussion yesterday about roots on the "Building a better soil" thread, I wanted to share these pictures of the roots of one of my outdoor girls this year

Fine hair roots woven through the soil like steel wool, with a few larger tap roots growing through the bag to reach deep

Thank you TheCelt. Whoa! We have some powerhouse-hitting sharing going on here today. :laughtwo: Those are the roots I aspire to. They look just like the ones so many of us proudly display around here, eh? One grow at a time we're making a difference. The goal is better meds grown with less stress. Fine and healthy roots help us achieve that goal.

random thoughts while drenching

She is lovely, and I'm hoping she gets much frostier before harvest, but mostly today, she's thirsty.

image2581.jpeg

I've finally worked out that each of these little azalea pot plants takes one of the red solos filled to the top. This makes mixing the drench so easy for me. :battingeyelashes: Now the trick becomes getting that small volume of liquid evenly distributed throughout the pot. I'm shooting for even and no runoff. I find that easiest to control by using the little plastic med dosing cups Dale bought years ago for some hobby use. They've come in real handy here. You've seen me use them to soak seeds? Yeah, those. They make sweet little ladles for water slowly applied to the surface.

image2578.jpeg

While I'm doing this I'm having a conversation with her, you understand. :laughtwo: "You're the most exotic plant I've ever grown. You can start to frost up any time now. Aren't you the cutest thing with these little trees growing along your branches? " Stuff like that. LOL!

I'm also listening to George Strait sing "I Cross My Heart". Stumbled onto that one last night and I'm a bit lost there today. I can't believe I never heard it before. Feeling a bit clueless there. But it's country at its best, one of my great loves, so I'm singing my heart out. All this singing I'm doing lately is beginning to improve the voice, so my hope increases. This song causes a cascade of loving emotions that caught me off guard and have me reeling, and yet I keep going back over and over, because I want to get past that and learn it intimately.

image2579.jpeg

As this is going on I'm up close and personal with this little beauty, and it occurs to me as I croon and cry from the overwhelming rush of the memory of loving someone that intently and being loved back just as much, how this must be affecting this plant? They're positive emotions I'm shedding all over her, but they're kind of in overdrive. It suddenly gave me great respect for the people in my life who can deal with this, but it also made me curious once again if the plant picks up on the cultivator and modulates the terpene development.

I know, stoner thought to the extreme. Anybody want to own up to thinking it yourself? :laughtwo:

OK, she's done now. Time to check my other charges.

:hugs: this hug is for your harvest. These are just for you :hugs::hugs::hugs:
Enjoy your afternoon

And this hug is just for you. Hold on a moment longer this time. I just dabbed on fresh lavender oil and it's always such an amazing smell when its first applied. You timed that well. :laughtwo:  :hugs:

Doc, do you trim wet or dry?

I take off necrotic leaves and large sun leaves. Anything with resin stays on, get washed, hung and dried. I trim after it's dried and put trimmed nugs right in the jar as I'm working.

Dark Devil Auto (Day 71)

Just too cute to ignore while she got her TransWater drench.

Jamaican Dream (Day 58)

I had to pull her out for the DeStress foliar, so why not get some pictures in natural light? Yes, I know foliars are supposed to be done when the birds start to sing, but quite frankly, .....no. I'm still asleep then. On those nights when I don't sleep, a different matter. I personally haven't had any complaints from the girls.

I give everyone a 1/4 turn every day. This means I need to reposition the lights to keep from singeing too many leaves. You work like I do with CFLs, getting them in as close as possible, you're going to singe a few. Learn to live with it. The plants will forgive you and grow frostier because you scared them into thinking their life was threatened. What a species, eh?

A strip of velcro helps adjust the angle and proximity to the plant.

The attachment to the ceiling gives you horizontal control.

She's trying her best. That's all I can ask of her. I think she's gonna make it. Unbelievably, I think they're all going to make it. :laughtwo: :slide:

The Dark Devils: Variations On A Theme

The oldest, in Doc's Kit soil and now at Day 71. Next drench will be her first CAT. I'm a little late on her, but nothing can be done about it now.

Enjoying fresh air time with her baby sister.

The middle child, also in Kit soil, now at Day 58. She hides in the back and missed the DeStress today, so I'll catch her tomorrow.

image2607.jpeg

The baby, in LOS and at Day 43. She may look small and a little sad, but that's the way these grow. I expect she'll start to burst out real soon now. At least I hope so. :laughtwo:

One more wrap-up post to get out.

I certainly hope your day has progressed smoothly, and if not, that you were able to reach down and tap into that joy we keep cultivating. That's when it becomes most valuable IMHO. I live a joyful life by design because it was either learn to be joyful or have the stress of Dale's 20-year fight to survive drive us apart. Learning to be joyful was more appealing to me than losing him. I've always been grateful that we were able to pull that off. There's a certain pride in knowing we were passionate about each other down to his last moment of consciousness. When he slipped under that last time I was holding him, wrapped around him. The way it's supposed to be.

The holidays are going to be rough, aren't they? * SIGH *

:Love:Keep cultivating that joy and the Holidays will be......JOYFUL....:thumb:

I'm 69 today.....there's a joke there somewhere!

What did the shy pebble wish for? Just to be a little boulder.

I attended a very emotional wedding the other day....even the cake was in tiers!

How do you make a handkerchief dance? You put a little buggie in it.

:Namaste:...May the humor of the day fill the cockles of your heart!

One more: What did one hat say to another? You stay here, I'll go on ahead.

John, I love you. Pure and simple. You just knock me over every now and then. Happy Birthday you lovely man. :hugs: You're too far away from me John. :battingeyelashes: :circle-of-love:
